  1. QUOTE (pablo @ Jan 4, 2018 -> 01:24 PM) I've seen it mentioned that if Moustakas doesn't like the market now, he might sign a 1 year 17-18M deal and try again next offseason. If that's the case, no draft pick would be forfeited right? Still forfeit the draft pick, IIRC. There was another a couple years ago, can't remember who.
  2. QUOTE (Dunt @ Jan 3, 2018 -> 04:41 PM) Really good article Don't know why Zavala is not on the White Sox Top 30 list, not that it makes any difference at this stage of the game. I remember that Northsider had him at # 15 or so a few weeks ago.
  3. QUOTE (ptatc @ Jan 1, 2018 -> 10:59 AM) This will be the interesting part. With some fan bases willing to allow teams to tank and be bad for a few years, the middle level players may be in trouble. I don't think so. Maybe their agents will have to work a little harder or longer, but they will always outsmart the GMs/owners.
  4. QUOTE (Tex @ Dec 31, 2017 -> 07:45 PM) Not to sound like the old guy who thinks everything new sucks, but as we lose these guys an era in sports is ending. Listening to guys like him, Scully, etc was such a treat. I wish there was more room for a few of those guys instead of the over the top yellers and big time homers. Now most of the announcers are ex players instead of professional announcers. Sign of the times. I always like Enberg, even though he was a young guy.
  5. QUOTE (Jack Parkman @ Dec 31, 2017 -> 01:47 PM) When it comes to velocity and spin rate, 95-96 with above average spin>98-99 with below average spin. High spin makes it harder to pick up the ball to the eye of the hitter, and 96 with above average spin might as well be 100, and 99 with below average spin might as well be 94. You have to use both data points together. Have you ever seen guys throw upper 90s and still get destroyed by hitters? I have, and now we have found that the reason why is they had below average spin. How does Giolito's spin rate compare with others?
  6. QUOTE (Jack Parkman @ Dec 30, 2017 -> 09:16 PM) I don't want to trade Giolito under any circumstances this offseason because I have a sneaky suspicion that he's going to come into spring training throwing 95+ again. He had to rebuild his delivery from scratch after the Nationals messed with it, and I'd imagine that most of the kid's performance in AAA/loss of velocity was due to gaining new muscle memory and repeating his delivery. I find it hard to believe that he has just magically lost 5 mph off his fastball with no injury reported, therefore I think that after a season of the kid gaining comfort with his delivery again, the velocity will return. If it does, he's right there with Kopech and Hansen for stud ace potential. Ditto. I have thought the same thing, but you expressed it perfectly.
  7. QUOTE (CWSpalehoseCWS @ Dec 28, 2017 -> 10:40 PM) This. They're both great players, but it's a bit premature to go out and start trading away assets before you even know what you have in house. Give the kids another year and re-evaluate next offseason when the big FA's are available. Especially Cease.
  8. QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ Dec 27, 2017 -> 06:58 PM) Look at these contracts. their length and the ages of their highest-paid players. https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/SF...contracts.shtml This reinforces my oft expressed opinion that GM's are usually outwitted by the agents to the point where they (GMs) really look stupid, and they would not make it in any other industry.
  9. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 26, 2017 -> 02:26 PM) He also drove into a corn field. Trading Aparicio to Boston was almost as stupid as trading him to Baltimore.
  10. QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Dec 24, 2017 -> 04:15 PM) I just don't see how Frazier's value dropped so much that he's not a headliner for Cole. What are the reasons for Frazier's drop in value because I'm not seeing it? He didn't hit much. Yanks probably looking to fleece someone (again).
  11. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Dec 22, 2017 -> 08:33 AM) Williams can tie it with a three....he does! Chalmers??
  12. Not me. I'll take an improving Yolmer/Carlos at third in our final rebuilding year. We don't know what we have in Cease.
  13. QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Dec 20, 2017 -> 03:07 PM) Dick Vitale (a Rays season ticket holder) is pretty pissed. He sent out a tweet saying fans aren't paying major league prices to see minor league players. Dick lives outside of Venice, FL, which is a 3.5 hour drive to Miami. I doubt he sees many Marlin games.
  14. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 20, 2017 -> 02:49 PM) Bob Nightengale‏Verified account @BNightengale 1h1 hour ago The #Rays, of course, now will be trying to trade Denard Span if they can. Please don't call RH about Span.
  15. Still saying that Jeter got special treatment from MLB.
  16. MLB at fault here. One of the requisites for new ownership is liquidity after the purchase price. Obviously, this was overlooked for the Jeter Group.
  17. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Dec 18, 2017 -> 03:43 PM) No offense, but this all comes off as a Cubs fanboy circle jerk. What do you mean "if he finds a way to dump those salaries"? Heyward is unmovable at this point, I don't care what kind of magician you think he is. Lester is probably going to be unmovable soon enough, but let's say he isn't, then who replaces him in the rotation exactly? The Cubs have almost no internal pitching talent at the moment. And I'm not sure how you think Theo is going to convince the Ricketts to spend more than they're comfortable with or what their debt load allows. Again, what the Red Sox were able or willing to do has nothing to do with the Cubs. The Ricketts are simply not going to commit to three massive long-term contracts, way too risky for an ownership group that recently had to sell equity in the team to ensure enough on-going cash flow. I missed that. Got any details?
  18. Anybody here know why MM's stats were off last season? Plus, he is not as good as Arenado. Just sayin.....
  19. Dodgers have a lot of prospects, no doubt about it.
  20. QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 16, 2017 -> 05:40 PM) I'm sure everyone has seen that there's more talk on twitter the last 24 hours about Cubs going after him than the Sox That deal makes more sense than any Sox deal I have seen here.
  21. QUOTE (SonofaRoache @ Dec 16, 2017 -> 05:11 PM) This thread is in dire need of a rumor. Machado wants to be a closer; Renteria said OK.
  22. QUOTE (Dam8610 @ Dec 16, 2017 -> 02:04 PM) If he was DFAd, can't he just be claimed off waivers for nothing? Nope.
