  1. Moneyball had lots of hype but won no hardware--just like Billy Beane's baseball teams.
  2. If this were my restaurant, and this guy is a regular customer, the next time he comes in I tell him that we are adding an 18% gratuity to his bill and if he doesn't like it, he can eat elsewhere.
  3. Haven't done this yet for this year, but it's a fun exercise I do every year. I take the TBS Sunday afternoon and ESPN Sunday night schedules, cross off every game that has the Yankees, Red Sox, Braves, Cubs, Cardinals, or Dodgers. You usually don't have many games left.
  4. 1 Yes 2 Yes 3 About halfway between career and 2011 numbers 4 Thornton, Crain, and Reed 5 No
  5. I will say over, but by no more than 4-5 games.
  6. Doesn't seem to be much Big East discussion here, but I gotta hand it to my Irish for winning their 9th straight last night by thumping West Virginia. It's hard for me to grasp since I still see them as the team that lost by 30 to Missouri, but clearly they're better than that now.
  7. Fine, give Viciedo some of Lillibridge's AB's vs RHP, but I want to see both de Aza and Fukudome in the lineup vs RHP the first month or so to figure out how they are going to do.
  8. I thought Ozzie did pretty well managing the bullpen. It's filling out the lineup card where I thought I could do much better than Ozzie.
  9. This is how I'd start out the first month or so. Inevitably guys will play themselves into more playing time and some less. If the outfielders hit well and an infielder struggles, Lillibridge can take more IF at bats and leave more for Viciedo. Or if Dunn never recovers Viciedo can play more 1B/DH. There are a lot of possibilities, but this is how I'd start out to get a chance to evaluate everybody.
  10. Reminded me of when I was at Notre Dame. The student dining halls, who got 95% of their money from room and board paid by the semester, would not serve any meat on Fridays during Lent. The student center and other retail food outlets on campus, all of which made their money from direct sales, all served their full menus. Hypocrisy much?

  12. I would argue that there was no malice here. The 16 y.o. was supposedly telling other students that the coach had done something inappropriate with the 18 y.o. If the coach had actually not done that, then the 16 y.o. has done something terribly wrong by spreading this rumor and notifying the parent is an appropriate action. Straight or gay, you can't go accusing a coach/teacher of sleeping with a student if it didn't happen, and not expect consequences. If you were hiding something from your parents, then you should make doubly sure you aren't making false accusations.
  13. This sentence is what makes this case a bit unique for me. If the 16 y.o. was in fact spreading these rumors and said rumors weren't true, then the coach has some leeway in defending herself since teacher/student relationships are illegal and/or grounds for termination even if the student is of age. This also means that the 16 y.o. is the one who injected sexual orientation into the situation. If she didn't want her parents to know she was a lesbian, she should have kept her mouth shut about the 18 y.o. and the coach. I'm not a fan of protecting people who run their mouths in public and then get all indignant when the information reached people they didn't want to have it.
  14. What if they set up the 4-team playoff so that the semifinals weren't on campuses, but at pre-determined "host" sites for each conference, with the higher-seeded team controlling 75% of the tickets? If a Big Ten team is a 1 or 2 seed, they host in Indy, SEC hosts in New Orleans, Big12 in Dallas, PAC-12 in LA, ACC in Atlanta, and I guess we don't need to worry about the Big East hosting.
  15. Amazing performance by Phil Sunday. Would love to see him get his 4th green jacket.
  16. This reminds me a bit of the Andruw Jones signing, which seemed to work out pretty well.
  17. The density of the area around Wrigley and the nature of the work that needs to be done dictates that the Cubs will have to vacate Wrigley for a year. As has been noted by others, Wrigley is in pretty bad shape and they are either going to have to do this work or build a new stadium, so either way there is going to be at least one season without baseball at Wrigley. US Cellular is the only feasible option I can see for the Cubs for that season. Maybe it happens in 2013 or maybe a year or two later, but it pretty much has to happen soon. I think that the move to two 15-team leagues may make the scheduling a little bit easier, but if there are more than a couple rainouts, one or both teams may have to make up those games on the road.
  18. My father passed away on January 30. He grew up in Northern Indiana and became a Sox fan through listening to their games on the radio in the 50s. He took me to my first game when I was four (which was a Reds game, because at that time we were living in Southern Indiana). Went to our first Sox game when I was 8. What hurts the most is that my son turns four in April and we were going to take him to his first Sox game this season.
  19. It has to do with the Big 10 in that the Big 10 is trying to make the most money possible for its member schools, and if PSU is going to self-destruct its football program, the Big Ten needs to find a replacement that will field a competetive team and draw TV ratings.
  20. I especially loved the part where Rees led the Irish on a very nice TD drive, and the very next time they get the ball, Kelly puts Hendrix in at QB and he immediately throws a pick that sets FSU up for a score. Because, why would you want to keep the successful QB in the game when you have this other guy who runs really fast?
  21. Cutler has a degree from Vanderbilt. I'd bet he's capable of figuring some stuff out.
  22. It's those two statements that made me suggest the conference might want to get involved. It's one thing for an ex-player to say that he doesn't support the new coach. It's a far different thing to suggest that he will actively interfere with recruiting. It's also very different to suggest that current employees (faculty) won't support him. This sounds like it goes farther than former players expressing displeasure and goes very close to actual people within the university attempting to sabotage the program.
  23. With all these ex-players saing all this crap, I'm wondering if it isn't out of line for the Big Ten to threaten to boot Penn State if it doesn't stop.
  24. Where have the standards for writing gone when people can use the word "openest"???
