5/5 Tigers at White Sox
Feeky Magee replied to Swingandalongonetoleft's topic in 2015 Season in Review
QUOTE (Jake @ May 5, 2015 -> 07:52 PM) The definitive word on Avisail's BABIP Not as inflated as you might think. Line drives aren't luck except to the extent that you get to make your own luck. Nah, high line-drive rates aren't sustainable, their year-to-year correlation is the worst among the most common hitting metrics, and they tend to regress to career average. A look at how hard he's hitting the ball indicates that he's not hitting it harder than his career averages, suggesting a lot of softly and medium-hit line drives, which will start to dry up soon. -

QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ May 5, 2015 -> 07:43 PM) No, it's called I don't care about the stat. I know Avi won't be hitting .340 and probably not even hit .290. But currently he has been our best hitter average wise the last 10 or so games. Trust me, I know his average is going to drop a lot, I would be happy if he ended up hitting over .270 for the year. I don't need a stupid stat to tell me he won't hit .330+ for the year, that is just common sense by watching him hit Why take issue with me then? All I said he's he's currently hitting .340 and worth 0.0 WAR and that I worry about his value when that inevitably crashes. The only differences are that you use your "common sense" and I use my "stupid stat" to foresee that decline, and that you'd be happy with him hitting .270 and I think he'd be a total liability at anything close to that if nothing else changes. -

QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ May 5, 2015 -> 07:29 PM) I don't care about his BABIP for the 10th time. I am not an advanced stats guy so I won't be making any bets involving them And I am not saying Avi is going to continue to hit like this all year. I said he has been hitting the ball well lately and that is all I care about at the moment. Once his average starts to drop a lot then I will worry. The whole point of this is that the statistic tells you it's due to drop. You're essentially saying "I don't understand why this high thing is about to become lower so I'll say it's good when it's high and bad when it's low". -

QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ May 5, 2015 -> 06:57 PM) There is a difference though, we all knew Flowers was going to come back to earth because he has always been bad, Avi doesn't really have a track record at the MLB level while be healthy and he has a way better chance to hit over .280 then Flowers does I told you, I don't care what is BABIP is. Until he stops hitting the ball and getting on base it doesn't really matter to me. We didn't all know that, I had people telling me last year they didn't care what his BABIP was and that he'd clearly changed approach and he was hitting the ball harder etc. I don't particularly care if you care what BABIP is, it's a pretty well established statistic in terms of how I'm using it and I'm confident in saying is that if he keeps doing what he's doing now, his average will come down pretty fast. -

QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ May 5, 2015 -> 06:50 PM) Tyler Flowers and Garcia can't be compared. Avi is young and has the tools to be a good hitter. Once his average goes down and he isn't hitting the ball hard when he gets out then I will worry about it. He is playing well right now, let's be happy we have at least one guy hitting well They can be compared, in the sense that both had an inflated batting average on the 6th of May in consecutive years. And I just told you he's not particularly hitting the ball hard. And the point of BABIP is to worry before the average goes down. -

QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ May 5, 2015 -> 07:39 PM) Not this again... He has the best average on the team and he hit the ball hard. I don't care what his BABIPBIPE is. Yeah and this day last year the highest average on the team belonged to Tyler Flowers. And his hard hit % is 86th of 183 qualified hitters. -

QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ May 5, 2015 -> 07:33 PM) Did you see him hit the ball there or just saw he hit into a DP? I'm not commenting on that play, more that he's at 0.0 WAR with a .441 BABIP QUOTE (fathom @ May 5, 2015 -> 07:32 PM) He's been hitting the ball hard, but still shows no ability to lift He's hitting it less hard than in 2012 and 2013 when he was worth a combined -0.5 WAR. Seems like he's had a lot of soft and medium line drives, which are unsustainable. -

Weird how Tyler Flowers is absolutely not a major league baseball hitter without a sky-high BABIP. #MagicGlasses -

Really hope Avi hitting over .300 isn't fooling anyone. Sky-high BABIP, not many walks and power and horrendous defence -

2015 White Sox draft pick discussion

QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 07:59 PM) The guy I would like is Carson Fulmer, and it will definitely be close if he makes it to the Sox's pick. None of the hitters really wow me at all - as far as college hitters. And I have ZERO faith in the Sox taking a high school bat and developing him into an MLB bat, so to me it becomes take the BPA between a college arm and a high school arm. And I think it Fulmer is the BPA. He is having a terrific year in the SEC and has electric stuff. Many worry about his size and durability, but I have still yet to see any study (maybe there is one, I honestly have no idea) that finds any correlation or causation between a pitcher's size and his ability to stay healthy. There just seems to be an assumption that if you are not 6'3" and 220, you are destined for the bullpen because you aren't built like the prototypical pitcher. So he is the guy I would take. I really like Tucker, but like I said, I have no faith in the Sox being able to take a high school bat and help him become an MLB player. Me too. Annoyingly, the Red Sox seem keen on him at number 7. -
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 09:36 PM) Our prospects of the month is about performance, not rankings. If it was rankings it wouldn't change a lot month to month. But age and level are a factor. Then again, Dykstra threw a no-hitter and went something like 11 innings without giving up a hit. That's absurd. Guerrero's striking out over twice as many batters, Dysktra's BABIP is a little over .100

QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ Apr 25, 2015 -> 06:57 PM) Barons K'd 8 times in 3 innings v a reliever making a spot start (Greg Nappo, whose results have been consistently excellent, not sure why he's stuck at AA, bias against an 87 MPH fastball probably the reason). Junior Guerra has a no-no going through 5, having K'd 6, walked 0 and hit 1. 19 total strikeouts in this one heading to the bottom of the 6th. May and Hawkins both 0-3 with 3K. Anderson 2-3 with 2 steals.

QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 24, 2015 -> 08:27 PM) You know me, I think this team should bring back Viciedo and let him platoon with LaRoche. We already have a light-hitting defensive liability that should really be DHing -
