Interested to know why Brantly is seen as having more chance of winning the backup job than Kottaras, who "hasn't excelled on either side of the ball at the major league level". Kottaras is a lifetime league average hitter at the MLB level (100 wRC+), whilst Brantly has been horrible (69 wRC+). It's not like Brantly has excelled defensively either, ranking 88th of 108 in framing in 2012 and 109th of 116 in 2013. Kottaras has been 66th of 105, 32nd of 113, 80th of 112 and 78th of 108. -
QUOTE (WhiteSoxLifer @ Dec 30, 2014 -> 12:14 PM) Ben Zobrist would be a nice fit for White Sox, who currently see 2B as competition between Micah Johnson, Carlos Sanchez & Leury Garcia. https://twitter.com/philgrogers/status/549972921670963200 Key for White Sox w/Zobrist lies in Rays' interest in Dayan Viciedo and CWS willingness to deal significant prospects. Serious talk likely. https://twitter.com/philgrogers/status/549975570692702208 Why the f*ck is Leury Garcia being mentioned as being anywhere near the 2B job

QUOTE (flavum @ Dec 8, 2014 -> 01:55 PM) What's his SIERA? He doesn't have one mate, he's a catcher

Meh, if we were going with a weak stick at backup C, would've preferred a good framer

FIP probably overrated Quintana last year, his HR/FB rate screams fluke

QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 1, 2014 -> 02:44 PM) I'm really sick of the amount of "fine defensively" players who have not established themselves offensively we continue to peg onto our team. Our defense, collectively, is terrible. If we go into next year with an infield of Gillaspie - Semien - Johnson - Abreu I would cry watching our pitching squandered. None of our infield prospects have forced their way on our team. They have been pretty good in AAA, and bad on the big league team. Until they prove otherwise I'm not going to hold a spot for Semien on this infield. Who is your starting second baseman as of now? -

QUOTE (SCCWS @ Dec 1, 2014 -> 02:09 PM) Semien has so far shown to be a a below average infielder in majors and an average one in minors. Now maybe he can be a 4th outfielder but unless he makes a major improvment with his defense, his value is not great. What exactly was average about wRC+s of 167 at AA and 142 at AAA? And his defence is fine. Not as good as Sanchez, but the difference in the bat more than makes up for that. I sincerely hope the plan is for Semien to start at second barring something remarkable. -

QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Nov 5, 2014 -> 07:21 PM) Good call LDF. I just looked at them size by side comparing their 1st half/ 2nd half stats. Castro had the better first half but Flowers had the better 2nd half. Overall, Tyler improved while Castro took a turn for the worse. Not only will I take Tyler over Castro, but I will gladly keep the prospects it would take to acquire Castro. IMO, the grass is not greener in the case of Flowers vs Castro. You would take Tyler Flowers over Jason Castro, straight up? That's insane. A lot of people here are going to look silly if the Sox make Flowers their regular catcher and he doesn't get the huge luck he got last year. Castro walks more, strikes out considerably less, hits for only very slightly less power, runs the bases better, and is probably about to pass Flowers in framing given the rate of improvement he's shown as a young catcher.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Nov 5, 2014 -> 08:02 PM) Eh, he hasn't exactly had BAD luck the past two years. That's too much money to risk on a two-year bounceback play for me. It says more about Flowers than it does Montero. I'm just reminding people that Normal Luck Tyler Flowers is still probably a bad player. Obviously any Montero deal would depend on how much money they send and who we send.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 5, 2014 -> 06:02 PM) Except that Castro's BABIP was pretty damn normal last year. He decreased his walks, increased his strikeouts, and started hitting a lot more ground balls. Tyler Flowers' 2014 is incredibly similar to Jason Castro's 2013. I don't think Castro is much of an upgrade at this point. Tyler Flowers' 2014 is incredibly similar to Jason Castro's 2013? Except Flowers was worth 1.8 WAR and Castro 4.3? And yeah, no s*** to the other stuff, that's why we're even talking about the possibility of getting him.
-
I made this comment in the Montero thread: QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ Nov 3, 2014 -> 07:48 AM) The last time Montero had the BABIP luck Flowers did last season, he was worth 4.6 WAR, and that probably underestimated him by a lot because he's a great framer Steamer has him projected for 3 WAR (again, consider framing) and Flowers for 0.9 (framing to be considered here too but not as much) He'd be an unquestionable upgrade Replace Montero with Castro, 4.6 with 4.3 and 3 with 2.1 and I feel the exact same.
