Angels May Consider Trading For Dye or Paulie
DBAHO replied to Kenny Hates Prospects's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 23, 2008 -> 10:44 AM) He also was brutal with Boston and doesn't play defense like he used to. Small sample size to use with Boston. 84 AB's only. All I'm saying is that, I would rather have him than Owens, because I just don't think Jerry can put up anything more than a .330 OBP, and even worse power than what Kotsay did. All depends on the $$$ though. -
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Dec 23, 2008 -> 10:43 AM) I liked the Floyd trade (you can go back and look at my posts). Scouts raved about Floyd's stuff, he just seemingly had mental issues. I thought that going to the Sox where less would be expected (he was a top 5 Philly choice so they expected the world from him right away) he could perhaps find a grove and get his confidence back. Ive just seen nothing at this point to remind me of the Floyd acquisition other than hes a minor league pitcher. I hope Marquez turns into the an ace, I just dont really know anything about him. Well I mean at the time, the general consensus around here was that we didn't get "value" for Freddy Garcia, because we only got 2 pitching prospects for him, 1 who had questions about whether or not long - term he would be able to hold up as a starter because of his size, and the other in Floyd who like you said had good stuff, but his numbers were terrible and his confidence was way down. As Floyd's emergence has shown however, I don't think anyone can say Marquez isn't going to be any good, because you don't know what the Sox are going to do with him, and they have an excellent recent track record at bringing up young SP's who can do well at the major league level.

QUOTE (Wanne @ Dec 22, 2008 -> 09:18 PM) Snyder's salary is over $1.85M I believe...but on the flip side...he's a hell of a lot better than Toby for the money. Word out here was the DBacks were shopping Snyder anyway. Yeah Snyder would be a very good option to go for. My guess is the D-Backs would want some bullpen help or some young pitching in exchange for him.

QUOTE (Wanne @ Dec 22, 2008 -> 05:57 PM) Cabrera was an idiot to not accept arbitration IMO....and he would have made this team better despite what a lot of people feel about him. I think he and his agent seriously misjudged how bad the free agent market is ATM, and the effect the economy's had on that. He may have to swallow his pride, and sign a 1 year deal and take a pay-cut, and hope things pick up next off-season.
-
Basically the whole off-season is in a flux right now until Teixeira signs. After that, I think things are definitely going to pick up, and it could make for a very interesting January around here, to see if we sign the likes of Abreu etc.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 21, 2008 -> 05:21 AM) The easiest way to fix Jenks is to not let him pitch against Baltimore. His ERA and WHIP against every other opponent are 2.81 and 1.09 respectively. Yeah for some reason he always struggles against them, and has for the past few seasons. I wonder why that is?

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 23, 2008 -> 10:32 AM) There would be a revolt. Kotsay is Erstad revisited. A good centerfielder several years ago. Kotsay actually had decent numbers for Atlanta this season FWIW; .289/.340/.418 Not saying he's a great option, but if he came cheap, I'd probably rather him than Owens if he could put up a line like that again. Excellent plate discipline also (45K's in over 400 AB's). -
QUOTE (YASNY @ Dec 23, 2008 -> 10:12 AM) I don't know if Marquez can be a decent starter or not. I'm also not going to get on here and act like I really know one way or the other. Kenny Williams is paid to make those judgement calls. Sometimes he gets them right and other times he screws the pooch. But, in general, I trust KW's judgement. He's done a good job on that regard over the past few seasons (with Danks and Floyd). Marquez reminds me of the Floyd acquisition in that no-one really liked it at the time, but down the line it certainly worked out. KW's been targeting sinkerball pitchers, or pitchers with excellent breaking stuff to help keep the ball down at the Cell over the past few seasons, hence why Marquez was acquired.

QUOTE (philadelphia sox fan @ Dec 22, 2008 -> 03:43 PM) I didn't skip over you're entire post, but you have to watch with looking at too many numbers. If numbers is the only thing that matters, then Bobby Abreu should be getting 25 mil for 7 years. Just sayin... Well I don't know if it's just me, but I wouldn't want to be spending 25M on a guy who's put up a .814 OPS and a .843 OPS over the past 2 seasons. I'd like a little more bang for my buck.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Dec 22, 2008 -> 04:25 PM) He was commenting on the flood of people at the malls, I believe. You can't get a damn parking spot. What I think we're seeing here is something that had to happen, regardless. Every idiot out there had 6 credit cards that were maxed and were still buying flat screen tv's. People's shopping had become as gluttonous as their eating habits. It had to happen. Now, when we're having a fine shopping time at Christmas it's not enough, because corporations had gotten used to the insanity that was the last ten years. 'bout damn time. The levy finally broke, that's all it is. /the obvious Oh. Well I guess when people are getting laid off, unemployment is rising etc., and the economy going down the toilet, people just have less money to spend, and that they don't want to spend as much as they used to. But you make a good point.

It's not a bad idea for their younger pitchers possibly. Make the most of them before their arms blow out, and they'll avoid having to shell out the big $$$$ come FA.

There's a chocolate eclair in the Office Fridge on my Floor that's been sitting there since lunchtime. Should I?

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Dec 22, 2008 -> 04:12 PM) That. Bills, mortgages, petrol, putting food on the table etc. I guess.

QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Dec 22, 2008 -> 12:44 PM) I was going to link it when I saw it, but decided against it. It has the potential to be outstanding, but I have a feeling it's going to be one of franchises that takes a few years to get it right. Hopefully it doesn't die after year one. I saw it had a 30 team on-line mode also, which could be quite interesting. To be fair, I'm glad 2K Sports are doing it instead of EA Sports. Hopefully it'll find a "niche" market.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 22, 2008 -> 12:03 PM) Ellsbury was available when the Sox drafted the "safe" pick in Broadway. 2004 might have been a bigger disaster. They picked Fields, Gio, Lumsden, Whisler and Lucy in the first 2 rounds passing on Pence and Pedroia. They also selected Fields, Gio and Lumdsen before Huston Street. They have had their shot at good players, but for the longest time had a problem identifying them. Thankfully that problem that has been fixed now, and the Sox have a system which has gone from the bottom of the scrapheap with Houston, to argubly the middle class as a whole. I remember when we were actually linked with Pence in an off-season a couple of seasons back for Garland. Man I wish that deal happened (although if it did, we may not have Quentin).

Anyone seen the previews for that new MLB Front Office Manager game that's meant to be coming out next month?

QUOTE (Palehosefan @ Dec 21, 2008 -> 09:17 PM) Just posting about a trade I thought of. Heat trade: Marion, Beasley, Chalmers, DQ cook Bobcats trade: Okafor, Wallace, Felton Matches up financially. Okafor would have to ok the trade. Heat would get a starting 5 of Felton, Wade, Wallace, Haslem, Okafor to compete for the East immediately. Bobcats would get younger potential starters at 3 positions and a huge expiring salary of Marion. Am I shorting one team? Considering Brown is desperate for another big man, and he loves his shot blocking centers, I can't see the Cats dealing Okafor. Wallace and Felton are definitely on the table. I think Eddy Curry will still end up a Bobcat when it's all said and done.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Dec 22, 2008 -> 09:52 AM) PER is quickly becoming something that should be ignored more than not. When Derrick Rose doesn't have the highest PER on our team, that's when I stop paying attention. Jameer Nelson has a higher PER than Derrick Rose this season.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Dec 19, 2008 -> 09:05 PM) I agree with your premise Rock, but the Celtics are the best defensive team in the league. You can thank Tom Thibodeau for that. Still can't believe the Bulls chose Vinny Del Negro over him.

QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 18, 2008 -> 08:51 PM) When Jenks had his plus plus fastball, he was able to fool a lot more hitters with his curveball. Last year, it seemed a lot of hitters were able to lay off the curve because they weren't as geared up for the fastball. I'll gladly take the Jenks for the 2005 World Series that could throw it by anyone, and would like to see his average fastball rise into the 95-96 mph range again. So long as Bobby's ERA stays low, and he stays healthy, I don't care what version we have. Just so long as he gets the job done.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 19, 2008 -> 03:21 PM) IMO our corners are absolute garbage and the pass rush has been terrible. Im not sure our safeties are a huge issue. I think from watching Dallas over the past 4 weeks, their secondary is still not up to scratch, but because the pass rush has been so good, they haven't been exploited. I'd love for Dallas to go after a CF FS in the draft though (move Hamlin to SS and cut Roy Williams), because then I think our defense would pretty much be complete. Although an upgrade at NT (with Ratliff moving to DE) or DE in the 3-4 will help also.

I read that this morning. Obviously, Lloyd put him up to it.

Well just got told I can go home at 1 now. Looks like the Snow is set in for the day though.

QUOTE (rangercal @ Dec 19, 2008 -> 10:15 AM) The same way he'll feel about the Mayo for Love Trade. I read a column the other day asking who the worser GM was b/w McHale and Thomas. Honestly, you could build a case for McHale.
