Yah its gross, but a 13.7% BB% is exactly what the Sox need - not to mention the left handed power. He's going to strike out a lot - but he also provides some things that the Sox lineup sorely needs.

Yah, I don't think a team is going to want to jam up a roster spot all year on a DH only guy. I would happily wager that he won't be drafted in the R5, but if he is, chances are he's getting returned to the Sox before the season. Having an extra roster spot next season may be enough to entice someone to make the gamble, but I just don't see it.

A little surprised to see this take from GreenSox, the lover of fringe prospects. Frare and Ruiz are going no where. Frare still has 2 options and Ruiz 1. Both have great arms, and while they both were terrible in 19, they are good AAA insurance. Palka is a dead goose - he'll be gone soon. Medeiros is probably a coin flip at best to survive the offseason. Profiles decently as a lefty reliever, and did OK once transition to that role full time in 19, but LOOGYs are less valuable now with the new rules, and he's behind Bummer, Fry and Frare. So going to be tough for him him to crack the MLB pen, but he does have 2 options, so that helps. Vieira is out of options, so he's probably the likeliest to go of this crew after Palka, and the fact that the Sox didn't call him up in August probably shows how they feel about him. But he did pass the first round of cuts, so they clearly like him enough to keep him around for now. His arm is electric. Oh and Mercedes....no one is going to take this guy in the R5 draft. Keeping him off the 40 man is fine, and probably the easiest way to retain him for now.

Except you generally want your backup catcher to actually be good at catching. Collins best role is a platoon DH/1B and 3rd catcher. He'll get plenty of at bats that way, and that is how I expect the Sox to utilize him in 2020. The plan works a hell of a lot better with Grandal in the fold, however.

I am not defending that trade, but Semien was still terrible defensively with Oakland the year after the trade. He really didn't become a plus defender until 2018, after 1 season of being one of if not the worst SS in the league, and another 2 seasons of average at best defense. Could he have made that same progress with the Sox? Impossible to say. But its not like Oakland transformed him overnight.

Do I think the Sox should go after Betts in 2020? Sure, assuming Adolfo doesn't explode into a big time prospect in 2020, which I think is a decent possibility if he can stay healthy. I do not like the Sox chances of actually landing him, and even if the Sox were dumb enough to trade Madrigal or Cease for Betts prior to 2020 season, Betts is still going to test FA. Does that mean the Sox can't sign him? Obviously not. But it means they'll have to outbid 29 other clubs on the open market. Therefore, I am not trading any significant assets for him this winter.

Sure - but there is likely to be an "issue" with whomever we acquire to play RF. At least with Peralta he shouldn't cost much via trade or 2020 AAV, isn't a long term commitment, he provides lineup balance, plus defense and plus OBP. He is a pretty good fit. If he were always healthy, he'd cost quite a bit more. He's also really only had 2 injuries of substance in his 5 full major league seasons. Not ideal, but 3 of the past 4 season he has appeared in 140+ games. I also feel like Leury would fill in for Peralta most days if he hit the IL, not Engel. Peralta and Leury are also pretty good platoon mates.

He was last season. Not sure if he'll be a milb free agent this offseason, though. He did not pitch at all in 2019 due to injuries.

I like David Peralta as a stop gap option. 1 year of control - should be around $9M in final year of arb. Plus defender. Left handed bat. Career .346 OBP. There is talk that Peralta is a non-tender candidate, so I imagine the Dbacks wouldn't want a ton besides the salary relief. I think he's a good fit to cover RF in 2020 without a long term commitment, and then revisit a year from now. Hopefully by then Adolfo is ready to take over, but if not, then would be an appropriate time to back up the Brinks truck for Mookie.

Betts is not going to sign an extension. There is zero reason for him to not test free agency. Trading assets for 1 year of a star player before the Sox are clearly in contention mode would be idiotic. Mookie most likely doesn't even make this a playoff team in 2020. If the Red Sox want to trade Betts for something like Rutherford + Sheets + Pilkington - sure make the deal, and roll the dice. There is no point in giving up anything more than that, and there is a 0% chance a team closer to contention would not beat that package. Giving up Madrigal for 1 year of Betts is the type of deal that is going to get hammered for a decade as Madrigal becomes one of the stars of baseball in Boston. Hahn pretty much said last week that 1 year rentals that will require a lot to acquire are not really in the cards, so not sure why this is still being discussed.

Platoon DH/1B/catcher. We’ll get plenty of ABs against right handed pitching in 2020.

There is zero percent chance that Boston would trade Betts, one of the very best players in the game - even if only for a year - for a guy that is going to be nontendered and a guy that has 2 years of control but will miss the majority of 1 season with TJS. To suggest otherwise is just plain silly.

Especially when, in today's market, there should be plenty of solid SP options available on 1 year deals. Just make the first SP add an impact one. The one situation where I could get behind the logic on two SP on multiyear deals is Wheeler + Ryu. And that is if Ryu could actually be attained a 2 year deal in the $30-35M range a FG projected.

I don't think Pederson would cost much, and yes I would perfer him to Castellanos who I hate as a fit unless the Sox go balls to the walls. But I'd love to hear your extensive list of options.

Unless you think the Sox plan to flirt with the luxury tax on 2022-2025, there is zero percent chance the OD payroll is north of $150M. To do what you’re proposing in one offseason is just simply not feasible.

Yah, its less than ideal. But most lefties don't hit lefties well, and Leury can play some RF against lefties. He hits lefties very well.

Also only for 1 season, whereas you're likely committing to at least 4 years with Castellanos. So now you either have a poor OF defense for the next 4 years, or you have an expensive DH with a slightly over league average bat.
