Covey to be recalled
QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Aug 15, 2017 -> 12:02 PM) Any word of who got demoted? Nevermind. Just takes Clippard's spot, I assume.

September Call Ups
QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ Aug 14, 2017 -> 08:28 PM) Brantley not on the 40-man. Don't expect him to come up. What's the point? Its either Alfredo Gonzalez or Rob Brantley. Alfredo Gonzalez is on the 40 man, but is OPSing .600 in AA. Brantley will be added to the 40 man, and then removed again after the season. If they really needed a spot, they could DFA Gonzalez now instead of after the season.

September Call Ups
Realistic possibilities are as follows: Rymer Liriano Tyler Danish Rob Brantley Danny Farquhar David Holmberg Lucas Giolito Carson Fulmer Jacob May Brian Clark Connor Walsh Michael Ynoa Matt Purke Mark Lowe Danny Hayes DJ Peterson I suspect Covey will be added tomorrow, and whoever goes down will come back up in September. Willy and Davidson will be back on the roster when they get off the DL. Though I suppose Willy may not be back this year. Obviously they won't add all those guys. My guesses are as follows: Rymer Liriano Tyler Danish Rob Brantley Danny Farquhar David Holmberg

Liriano IL POTW
I imagine he will be on the roster in September.

when can Sox contend?
QUOTE (turnin' two @ Aug 14, 2017 -> 01:24 PM) Seems right to me. I would like to see them sign maybe a pair of starters (and hopefully they have better luck than this year). For the rotation at the beginning of next year there is Rodon and Lopez ready. Shields is still there, but quite replaceable (obviously) they could have innings for guys like Clay Buchholz or Matt Moore. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016/08/2017...agent-list.html Plenty of sign and flip candidates. More will likely come after the non-tender date. Shields is going to be run out there in hopes of cobbling together 10-12 starts and getting moved. No reason not to, really. But yah, all depends on if Sox want Giolito, Fulmer, Stephens and Guerrero to earn it in AAA. Could conceivably put any of those 4 in the opening day rotation, and could also throw Danish in the fire as well. Danish is a reliever in my mind and had virtually no chance to start in the bigs, so I hope they just put him in the pen.

when can Sox contend?
QUOTE (iWin4Ron @ Aug 14, 2017 -> 11:31 AM) 2018: Lost year, hopefully the management can make some more (but discrete) moves. Wouldn't mind picking up a handful of free agents, especially relivers/starters on minor deals to flip them at this deadline or next years. Just keep plugging away. I've said it before and I will say it again - the Sox should just go to battle with what they have next season. Maybe sign a couple relievers we could fix and flip, and perhaps maybe 1 arm in the rotation to make Giolito, Fulmer, Stephens and Guerrero earn their opportunities in AAA. But on the offensive side, we just need to give the guys we have at bats. The outfield is covered between Avi, Leury, Delmonico, Engel, Alen Hanson, Willy Garcia, Liriano, Cordell, May and Tilson. Plenty of guys that need MLB at bats. Corners are covered with Abreu, Davidson, Delmonico, Saladino, Gillaspie, Hayes and DJ Peterson. MI is covered with Anderson, Moncada, Yolmer, Saladino, Hanson and even guys like Jake Peter and Eddy Alvarez. I really see no reason to sign any bats to ML deals. Bring some guys in on minor league deals and start them in Charlotte - sure. But rest of this season and next should be used to get the fringe guys as any plate appearances as possible. Hopefully by 2019 we've found a 3 or 4 of those fringe guys that are worth keeping around.

Clippard to Houston for PTBNL or cash
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 14, 2017 -> 10:13 AM) No one has to clear waivers from Houston to get to the Sox. They have the first choice. That's why this Kemp thing makes little sense. Why would it be a PTBNL or cash? Because the Astros couldn't trade him if they hadn't put him through waivers yet. Which they probably had not because why put a prospect (using that term loosely here) in AAA through waivers? Therefore, the PTBNL status is merely a procedural move while the Astros put Kemp on waivers and allow the Sox to claim him, completing the deal. No idea if that is actually what is going on here, but it makes some sense if Kemp is the guy. But as I said earlier, we'll know in a couple days if it is Kemp.

when can Sox contend?
I've always been on the 2020 bandwagon, but it looks like the Sox could at least have a very interesting young core by 2019. If they are active in free agency leading up to the 2019 season, I think that team would have a chance to be the first of many division contending teams.

Clippard to Houston for PTBNL or cash
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 14, 2017 -> 08:59 AM) Let me put it this way. would you rather have Tony Kemp and a million dollars, or nothing? THAT is really the choice here (assuming the PTBNL thing is right?} I think at least 90% of the folks on here would be quite pleased if the PTBNL ends up as Tony Kemp. If it is, I think we'll know within a couple days. If we don't know within a couple days, it isn't Tony Kemp.

Clippard to Houston for PTBNL or cash
Yah I have to imagine the Sox may get something interesting. Otherwise why even bother helping the Astros.
-
Clippard to Houston for PTBNL or cash
Could still be Kemp, but Sox would need to claim him on waivers.
-
Clippard to Houston for PTBNL or cash
Kemp is on the Astros 40 man. But I suppose with Sox having AL worst record, that could be easily solved.

Holmberg Outrighted
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 11, 2017 -> 02:00 PM) If he was outrighted, he made it through waivers. If he wants to continue to get paid, he'll go to Charlotte. Also pretty sure this is the 2nd time he has been outrighted, so I believe he can elect free agency.

Holmberg Outrighted
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 11, 2017 -> 02:00 PM) If he was outrighted, he made it through waivers. If he wants to continue to get paid, he'll go to Charlotte. Oh, you clear waivers before you get outright, and not after? Must be a quick process then. Thanks for the clarification, by the way. I wasn't sure how that nuance worked exactly.
-
Holmberg Outrighted
Its just bizarre because I believe besides the vets in Clippard and Petricka, the rest of the bullpen has options. The Sox outrighted Holmberg off the 40 man when they still had 4 open spots (now 5). I believe Holmberg has to pass through outright waivers to get sent to Charlotte, but I could be mistaking on that. Just seems strange to risk losing him, even if he doesn't have much upside. He is at least a usable lefty reliever.

Holmberg Outrighted
Wasn't the guy I expected to get the axe.

Doesn't seem to appear on any of DBacks mid season lists, but looks like a nice relief prospect.

Hahn on 670 the score now - 1140 am Central
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 10, 2017 -> 04:29 PM) I don't remember the Sale signing looking bad for Chris at all. Given how worried everyone always has been about his arm falling off, it was a very wise move for him too. And Adam Eaton's looks pretty good on his end today, he just happens to be on a different team. Sale should be making over $30M per year. He is an HOF caliber pitcher in his prime with generational stuff. His contract is highway robbery. Obviously Chris signed the contract and he has no choice but to collect what is still more money than any man needs. But I assure you Chris seriously regrets that decision.

Hahn on 670 the score now - 1140 am Central
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 10, 2017 -> 06:28 PM) Imagine what the Indians would get for Lindor, Jose Ramirez, Brantley, Zimmer, Gomes, Encarnacion...if they auctioned all of them off. That doesn't even include "lost value/opportunity cost" with Carlos Santana and Kipnis. Finally, throw Kluber, Carrasco, Bauer, Andrew Miller, Salazar, Cody Allen and even Clevinger on top. Could even throw Austin Jackson and Almonte in there. Of course, no GM or ownership group would tear apart that nucleus unless they were out of their minds, right? Sure, there are teams out there that could auction off their talent and potentially get more because they started with more (the Indians included). That is why the Sox were never good with a superstar pitcher and well above average 2 starter and 2 boarder line stars in Eaton and Abreu. The rest of the team was s***. The Sox were in a seriously bad spot that looked like it was only going to get worse. Years of running the organization on the fly had taken its toll. It remains to be seen if the Sox can actually put a winning product on an MLB field in the next few years. But the outlook is incredibly bright. It is truly amazing what Hahn has been able to accomplish in such a short time, IMO. And as I've already stated; the lion share of those returns reaped enormous benefits from contractual situations.

Hahn on 670 the score now - 1140 am Central
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 10, 2017 -> 03:30 PM) Can we stop acting like Hahn invented the wheel with those contracts? The defending division champion who was one run from a WS title has more than 3 players signed to similar team friendly extensions. They were good deals on Hahn's part, but they're pretty common around baseball. Basically all of those deals looked bad for the player almost immediately. Those were fantastic signings at the perfect tine. They were 3 of the more valuable assets in all of baseball last offseason for that reason. Other teams haven't had that success. If it wasn't for those contracts, the Sox would be pretty much royally f***ed right now.

Hahn on 670 the score now - 1140 am Central
QUOTE (NCsoxfan @ Aug 10, 2017 -> 12:27 PM) I am a Rick Hahn fan, but the amount of love he's gotten from fans lately is bordering on the absurd. The reason he was able to get such good prospects back in these trades, is because he dealt a bunch of great players, not because he's great! Maybe he did better than the average GM would have (who knows), but any competent GM could've extracted a lot of value in these trades too. The fact that we had to rebuild with a roster full of valuable players is an indictment on Rick, Kenny, and Jerry. The rebuild is exciting, and I'm very optimistic, but the praise for Hahn is out of control. One of the primary reasons Sale, Q and Eaton brought back the returns they did was due to the contracts Hahn negotiated with them. The man deserves the praise he is receiving.
