QUOTE (GreenSox @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 08:52 AM) Isn't the idea that teams will use some loophole - sign him for a modest amount, agree to DFA him after 1 year (or whatever it's called when you let a player go early in career, and he agrees to sign back for some predetermined massive amount? I don't know. Seems pretty sketchy.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 08:37 AM) This is what I posted in the other thread regarding the new rules: Here's the Baseball America (paywall) explanation from Ben Badler: http://www.baseballamerica.com/internation...hyAyO7IBYWtT.97 Clubs either get $5.75, $5.25, or $4.75 million to spend on international prospects under 25 per year. Teams can trade all of their bonus amounts but can only acquire 75% of their bonus pool in trade. Here are the amounts. $5.75 million Arizona Baltimore Cleveland Colorado Kansas City Pittsburgh St. Louis San Diego $5.25 million Cincinnati Miami Milwaukee Minnesota Oakland Tampa Bay $4.75 million Atlanta Boston Chicago Cubs Chicago White Sox Detroit Houston LA Angels LA Dodgers NYM NYY Philly San Francisco Seattle Texas Toronto Washington Players that cost $10,000 or less don't count against the pool. The following teams can't spend over $300,000 on a player because they are in the penalty from previous years: Cubs, Dodgers, Giants, Royals, Athletics, Astros, Braves, Cardinals, Nationals, Padres, and Reds. All of those teams can trade their full amounts however. The White Sox can trade for up to $3.5 million more in international money. This is absolutely something that they should be doing. White Sox can spend $8.3 million internationally if they trade for the maximum that they can. I'll be very curious to see if they do this. I think Hahn is smart enough to pull something like this off but who knows. Very curious indeed.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 08:25 AM) The Charlotte lineup should have Yoan Moncada, Adam Engel, and Jacob May in it. The rotation will consist of Giolito, Lopez, and Fulmer with Clark and Burdi in the bullpen. Fun team. Hopefully a few more exciting pieces as well.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 08:30 AM) Honestly, I'd take Jarlin Garcia and their competitive balance pick. That's like having an extra 2nd rounder. Sox would have 3 picks in the top 50. By the time more guys sign, it very may well be in the top 30.
-
QUOTE (DirtySox @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 08:23 AM) I would take Braxton Garrett. Braxton or Kolek + Competitive balance pick. I'd take either. Edit: they were willing to give up a draft pick to sign Jansen plus give him over $80 mill so who knows.

QUOTE (GermanSoxFan @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 08:04 AM) Addison Reed saved 40 games fo the 2013 Sox who lost 99 games. There will be enough save opportunities as bad teams tend to not win in blow outs when they win their 60ish games. This. So true. That's why in fantasy baseball, I usually don't fill my closer spots until my last 2 picks (only 2 RP slots) or sometimes I wait until after I drafted that is hurt gets put on the dl so I can stash the guy.

QUOTE (beautox @ Dec 13, 2016 -> 08:50 PM) Shields buyout is covered by the Padres. the '18 and '19 FA market should be very interesting provided the sox appear on track I would be all for signing Manny to play 3B even if in '19 the sox are .500, he would be 25 for the start of '19, and if not Manny, Nolan Arenado is a FA the following season at age 29. I don't think thats accurate but the buyout is only like $2 mil so almost non-existent regardless.

Quintana Rumors: Round and round and round we go
Bob Sacamano replied to GGajewski18's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (oldsox @ Dec 13, 2016 -> 05:40 PM) Slight exaggeration here. He has his flaws, but is still a legitimate MLBPer, just not as good as we all had hoped when we got him. Too many posters here treat him as if he were some hobo off the street corner. Can't hit and can't field. How is he a legit MLB player? -
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 13, 2016 -> 05:23 PM) Yes but my question is if teams want to max him if he gets posted a year from now, do they have to not sign anyone the summer of 2017? That seems like a huge risk for any team. The signing period would be what, July 2017-June 2018? So yeah, you couldn't sign anyone really next summer.

Just saw the draft order for the competitive balance portion of the draft was released. Marlins can always throw in their pick to a deal.
-
If someone sign Otani to a say a crazy $40 million signing bonus due to his restrictions, the team would have to pay an additional $40 million for a tax penalty correct? Or did these rules change in the new CBA?
-
QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 13, 2016 -> 04:22 PM) I imagine a few selling points: - Large Japanese expat population/Japanese Americans - Team willing to let him play 2 positions - Location - Media Market - How good team is No idea how any of those would be weighted for him. We definitely don't fall into a few of those categories.

Yeah we're dying here...someone go bother that drunk Dave guy on twitter. -
QUOTE (SoxAce @ Dec 13, 2016 -> 12:32 PM) I read this as Justin Turner at first and got excited. Me too! Was very letdown.
-
QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Dec 13, 2016 -> 11:11 AM) I believe you are right. Their current rotation is Chen, Conley, Volquez, Koehler, and Urena. Is Gonzalez really much of an upgrade? Not sure...just thought I'd bring it up that they were even looking for help before the passing of Fernandez.
-
QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Dec 13, 2016 -> 11:06 AM) Agreed. I think it'll come down to Washington and Miami for Robertson. I would not be shocked if Miami offered Garrett, Kolek, or Castillo for Robertson because Miami lol Didn't the Marlins check in on Gonzalez last July? Maybe we can package Gonzalez and Robertson together.
-
QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Dec 13, 2016 -> 12:06 AM) you mean MLB? He's a helluva a competitor he just had the single most devastating injury to a pitcher...and he's being paid nothing. Minor League deal he can be cut at any time. No, I said professional pitch meaning MLB or minor league.

Eaton to Nats/Giolito, Lopez, Dunning to Sox
Bob Sacamano replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (soxforlife05 @ Dec 12, 2016 -> 07:23 PM) He might have one of the 15 best contracts in the game. No where near a top 15 player in the game. And he's already peaked. I said this the other day. I love Eaton but I don't think he will do any better and probably slowly decline in a couple years. -
Never thought that guy would throw another professional pitch ever again to be honest.

Don't understand why they didn't just give up a little bit extra to add Robertson to this deal. -
Rockies honestly almost make the most sense out of any team due to them having to overpay to get pitchers there. Puts them in an awful position to try to compete. Also have young position player depth that can be moved.

QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Dec 12, 2016 -> 02:29 PM) Bummed about Jansen going back to LA -- was hoping we could package Frazier/Robertson Would've also required Turner not going back.

2016-17 free agency thread (NON WHITE SOX RELATED)
Bob Sacamano replied to southsider2k5's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE (reiks12 @ Dec 12, 2016 -> 07:08 AM) Dodgers confident they will get Turner according to Olney. Dammit. Not too shocking though. Haven't read anything connecting him anywhere else. -
QUOTE (ChiliIrishHammock24 @ Dec 12, 2016 -> 02:09 AM) I don't know man, it's not like we are far and away one of the worst teams. I think top 10 draft pick is a safe bet, and top 5 is a good chance. But we would have to move Q, Frazier, Robertson, Jones, Abreu for me to think we have a chance at #1. Agree. We are still kinda far from being worse than Reds, Brewers, A's, Padres, Phillies and Braves (most likely).
