K.C. Specials @ Chicago WHite Sox 4:10 PM CDT

3 batters in and 2 runs have crossed the plate. A doink and a boink as the Royals announcers have said. -
QUOTE (Dam8610 @ Sep 9, 2016 -> 10:21 PM) Well, since you asked: 1) Fire Robin Ventura. 2) Hire a good manager. 3) Sign Yoenis Cespedes. 4) Sign Wilson Ramos. 5) Sign a 5th Starter (Iwakuma, Fister, Hellickson, Nova look like decent options). 6) Trade for Puig if the Dodgers truly are giving him away. Before anyone goes off about "this is unrealistic", remember that the thread title is "What should the Sox do this winter?" This is what I think they should do this winter, and sadly is in no way reflective of what I think they will do this winter. If adding $50 million/yr to the payroll is an option I'm on board with that plan. Not a guarantee Cespedes will be a FA this year yet though.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 9, 2016 -> 09:16 PM) Good call, soxforlife. You called it. The Sox scouts and talent evaluators are a joke. I see a real hitter; a real baseball player in Saladino. The Sox brass sees a stiff. Sad. Hold on there a second, he doesn't become Semien 2.0 until he gets packaged with Fulmer for a one year rental this offseason coupled with a few scrap heap signings. -

QUOTE (Insp @ Sep 9, 2016 -> 07:58 PM) Typical: White Sox ahead, nobody's posting. That might have something to do with the fact the Sox have been out of contention for months. QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 9, 2016 -> 09:12 PM) He actually could play on a contending club. The Sox brass should be ashamed of themselves for not recognizing they have a real HITTER here and he should be starting for the White Sox. No reason to underappreciate this guy any more. HE CAN HIT. For real, folks. I said earlier in the year he will be Semien 2.0 with how he gets handled. -
Jon Heyman: Sox have little interest in moving Sale or Quintana

QUOTE (JUSTgottaBELIEVE @ Sep 9, 2016 -> 08:25 PM) Really pumped about the emergence of Rodon. Looks better and better each time out. He's looking like an ace in the making and possibly as soon as next season. That rotation is downright nasty if they get that #5 spot tightened up. He did the exact same thing in the second half last year. Let's see him put together an entire season before we pencil him in as an ace. -

QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Sep 8, 2016 -> 08:14 AM) What's the point in moving Sale if you don't move Quintana? He's only signed for one additional year. The higher injury risk with Sale and the fact that Quintana seems to be undervalued compared to other pitchers in the league for what he gives a team. -
QUOTE (harkness @ Sep 7, 2016 -> 10:27 AM) He really hasn't been bombed much this year... and for most of his career. He did when his fastball velocity fell into the 80's consistently. That is why he originally got released by the Orioles.
-
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Sep 5, 2016 -> 04:52 PM) It's fine having him go over 100. I'm so glad a lot of people on here aren't the manager. You fry his elbow early in his career and you simultaneously have destroyed our chances of a quicker rebuild or trying to contend for the next 1-2 seasons. All to give him a bigger workload in meaningless games.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 5, 2016 -> 04:39 PM) 117 pitches in worthless game....yikes 108+ pitches in 8 straight starts with him. What a joke. Like the outcome of this game really matters or something.

If Shields doesn't retire I say let him run up the highest full season ERA for a starter in MLB history. Let him blow up spectacularly. The current record is a 7.71 ERA in 167.0 IP set in 1930. If he can achieve over a 6.66 ERA he'd be in the top 5 worst all time for a starter. Given his stats with the White Sox this year he could very well challenge that record.

QUOTE (gosoxgo2005 @ Sep 3, 2016 -> 04:16 AM) I am pretty sure that was his way of saying "that roster you just composed sucked and it's another example of the White Sox "going for it" in a half assed way" Nailed it. The only real upgrade in that lineup compared to this year is Puig/Reddick over Avi. And unless the team has serious financial constraints you can't trade Robertson. Make him a setup guy again and move Burdi to closer. Sign another setup guy to pair with Robertson and move Nate Jones to the 6th-7th inning. We have a lot of depth coming back in middle relief/long relief. How could we possibly trade Melky when he's been our best hitter this season? I know I've suggested trading Robertson before but trading him and those other guys like Melky, Frazier, and Lawrie only makes sense if Sale and/or Q are being traded.
-
^ If that scenario ends up being what management has recently called a decisive, clear direction to be established in the offseason I think I am done with this team until there is new ownership.

QUOTE (JUSTgottaBELIEVE @ Sep 2, 2016 -> 09:15 PM) With Rodon coming into his own, I'm really pumped about what this rotation can do next season. Sale, Q, Rodon form arguably the best 1-3 combo in the league and back it up with Gonzo and hopefully a solid Fulmer and that rotation certainly has the potential to be top 2 or 3 in the league. It's hard to break up a rotation that strong with 4 of the 5 guys under 30 yo still. I'm all in on building around that staff but the front office has their work cut out for them this offseason in order to improve other areas of weakness on the roster. I thought that would be the case this year. Hopefully KW can get Shields to retire. -
QUOTE (SCCWS @ Sep 2, 2016 -> 08:31 PM) He is close to if not the best defensive center fielder in baseball. Add to that he has 22 HR and 75 RBI and cheaper than Sale But I would take the story w a grain of salt. That is a Levine story. I had posted before the trade deadline that I thought Bradley was an untouchable based on the position he plays for Boston. That ship has "sailed " now since Boston probably will go for a 2nd tier pitcher w the emergence of Porcello to go w Price. The defensive ratings of these players change so much year to year I don't really put much stock into where they are rated as long as they are above average defensively. He's a guy who looked lost at the plate his first few years then had a few good months this year and he hit .167 in August. He just seems like a guy who could easily go back to hitting sub .240. He's not a base stealer either.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 2, 2016 -> 01:51 PM) http://www.foxnews.com/sports/2016/09/02/r...o-get-sale.html I don't know why our front office wants JBJ so bad. He'd be a player I would be more than willing to sell high on if I was Boston with the prospects coming up through their system.

QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Sep 2, 2016 -> 11:16 AM) You're assuming another team was interested in them. I'd like to think there was...but who knows for sure. Mark I read that Boston had interested in acquiring Robertson. -
QUOTE (harkness @ Sep 1, 2016 -> 10:53 PM) One of the trademarks under Ventura is just complete panic in easy RBI situations... It really is amazing. He has a complete inability to get his team to relax in clutch situations. Maybe with a different manager these players might do the same choke jobs again and again. But I have a gut feeling they wouldn't I think they would. Teams take on the personality of their manager. I've never really gotten the impression Robin gets upset if they lose a game under any circumstances. If Robin talks to the team the same way he talks to the media I have no doubt they've tuned him out.

QUOTE (dpd9189 @ Sep 2, 2016 -> 12:27 AM) Personally I think Heyman's article is a bit misleading and I'm not buying it. Does JR want to trade those guys? Absolutely not. However if he, KW and RH are truly in lock step then they know that they are going to have to make some difficult decisions going forward that will involve trading these guys to hopefully build this team up for future success. Hell nobody wants to trade Sale or Q but when you take a look at the bigger picture, something has to change. Throwing money at big time UFA's when you're not a contender gets you in more trouble and only delays the rebuild. I also think that this may have been Sox PR using Heyman to put out the message that just because we're likely to trade Q/Sale, it won't come cheap and we're not going to just give them away. I'll be shocked and disappointed if the Sox decide to stay the course and Hahn will have egg all over his face after his "mired in mediocrity" comments. I'm hoping for a total rebuild with a young talent infusion that is ready to compete for the playoffs by 2019/2020. Especially with the 2018 UFA class looking like it's going to be the best ever, the Sox will have the money to spend to land a big time fish or two that can help them compete that season. just my opinion. I read plenty of reports that said the Sox never seriously entertained trading Sale or Q in the days leading up to the deadine. I honestly believe they won't trade those two until they feel they have exhausted all options keeping them on the roster. Which means 1-2 more seasons of going for it. I'm betting the farm gets gutted to the point where we have literally no players with major league upside outside of the major league roster before they take a rebuild seriously. We are pretty close to being there though. We are going to need players like Frazier and Melky to sign very team friendly extensions to make it work which seems like it could be possible. Might be a good idea to try to extend Frazier 3-4 years beyond next season this offseason in the hopes he'd go for something team friendly before a contract year rebound. If Sale or Q were going to be moved in the offseason it's likely we would have done something like move Melky or Robertson at the deadline. -
QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 1, 2016 -> 09:46 AM) And Benintendi is hitting .325 with an .850 OPS. The need to get a young established MLB star is foolish to me. It's kind of amazing how many of their prospects are good to great right away compared to our organization.

I hate to throw in the towel for next year already but I think we all know deep down they are going to do the same type of roster moves that were made last year. -

QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 1, 2016 -> 09:28 AM) My interest in spending big begins and ends with Encarnacion. He is Boston's #1 target to replace Ortiz -
QUOTE (GreenSox @ Aug 31, 2016 -> 11:13 PM) if the Dodgers are basically giving Puig away, that's one thing. But there's no reason on this green earth for the Sox to get in some bidding war for Puig. The Sox need a major makeover. That really doesn't include trading real talent on a crapshoot like Puig. The last two years the most prominent players who were obviously made available by their teams were grabbed by Rick Hahn......and he ended up the sucker. And add Shields; another player the team was overtly trying to dump, to the HAhn ledger. This winter, Puig will be front and center. Stop doing the obvious and walking into traps, Rick. Put some creativity and finesse into your game. And most of all, face reality about this team. I only like taking a flyer on Puig if we get Cespedes too.

Why did we not walk Collins with a runner on 3rd (winning run) and 1 out to set up the double play in the 9th? Pure stupidity. I don't care if it's the 9 spot up in the order any major league player can hit a fly ball. This is another one of Robin's unexplainable decisions that will cost our team wins in the long run.
