White Sox sign Gio Gonzalez

There is no reason to dislike Gio Gonzalez as a fifth starter for likely half a year.

  • Another pitcher off the market. What the hell is Hahn waiting for? Why aren’t we signing any of these guys? Oh wait, he signed with the Sox? Then what are we doing signing this washed up piece of

  • On the bright side, people have to stop calling Giolito “Gio”.

  • How anyone could be mad about this move is just so silly.

As a 5 starter he is ok (projected for 1.5 war).

Add that to considerations of what our fifth starter position amounted to in war last year. ?

He stands a fair chance of being better than a “fifth starter”

I will believe they view him as MLB starting caliber when I see it

I thought we were talking about DH

People keep assuming Gio will only start for half a season but if Lopez doesn’t step up he’s the one sent the pen or if Cease doesn’t progress he’s the one sent back to Charlotte when Kopech comes up.

Unlike a guy like Rich Hill, Walker or Wood, Gio is good enough and durable enough to pitch a full season as the 4th starter.

I like this move. He is our #5 until Kopech comes up. And if he is still healthy and performing well at that point, he can either become a long reliever for us, or take Lopez's spotin the rotation if he is outpitching him.

Now go sign Ryu and Castellanos and they can give the Indians and Twinkies a run for their money in the division.

Wow, short leash you're giving Cease.

Some of you are so miserable it's tough to read.

Do yourself the favor and put that clown on ignore.  His next post that adds anything of value will be his first.

I can see you tried just reading the 1st few posts then commenting instead of your usual way of reading the whole thread.  LOL you get burned either way when you are late to the news.

Fathom already said it's better upon review of his stats.  I was going to suggest he then delete his 1st post , decided not too . Oh well

Normally I hold off if I’m late to the party, but in this case I was surprised by the initial reactions by some posters I generally agree.

Such as?  They play about 2/3 of their games against RHP so don’t say McCann.

Grandal, who is supposedly only catching about 100 of the games. Having him rot on the bench when he's not catching would be a horrible misuse of resources

Not at all. If by June when Kopech is knocking on the door and Gio is having a 4 ERA and Cease’s ERA is still approaching 6, do you send Gio to the pen or send Cease down to work on his game?

I'm fine with this signing.... a veteran arm who will hopefully eat up innings and provide leadership and depth.

His career has now gone full circle.

I think it depends a lot more on Cease's control than his era.

Struggling is struggling, unless his ERA is inflated due to some uncommon fluke. Sox are in a position to compete next year and they should not move Gio to the pen in favor of Cease in the scenario I mentioned.

They need to make every possible effort to compete, while simultaneously monitoring Lopez and Cease and perhaps shifting one of them to the bullpen if either Dunning, Lopez or Kopech are ready to go.

Balancing act.

The Gio of 2012 would be nice.

Perfect placeholder for Kopech and will be there if anyone else struggles.  Nice signing.

I feel like his ERA was inflated last year due to giving up more HRs than what normally would be expected.  He seemed to have a habit of pitching 4 great innings every game, and then having one inning where everything just fell apart.
