September 9, 20205 yr You absolutely cannot trade Grandal. 1. He is better. 2. If you trade a big FA after 1 year, you significantly hurt your chances for other FA when the money is close. 3. He is better.

He looks like he is trying to win a job he already has, and is trying to do too much. He needs to relax and let the game come to him instead of trying to force it to impress people/coaches/staff. This. 100%.
September 9, 20205 yr Teams need two good catchers. The Sox will decide what resources to allocate where. Mazara is not helping. Maybe McCann is another Nick Foles. He could start more in the playoffs. Makes you wonder about scouting. Grandal is still worthy.

September 9, 20205 yr I would simply keep the player who has been one of the best catchers and best hitters in baseball this year and for the last 5 years

Get rid of encarnacion and rotate them between 1b and dh. Easy enough to get them both 100 games doing that. Edited September 9, 20205 yr by ChiSox1917

The Sox might be better off without a full time DH on the roster if they can utilize position players like Grandal, Eloy,Abreu and others to fill that role. If Vaughn absolutely rakes in the minors next year against LH and RH pitching, and does the same when he comes up to the majors, that is another story.

Vaughn alone doesn't get you a true TOR in his prime with 2+ years of control and a rental is not worth giving him up. Just keep vaughn, get rid of EE next year and maybe sign a pitcher.
September 9, 20205 yr For the following reasons, you keep Grandal and let McCann go. 1. Paying that much money to 2 catchers is a lousy way to allocate resources. It is also easier to just keep Grandal and let McCann go. 2. This team could desperately use another left handed bat. Keeping McCann over Grandal gives you 8 righties and 1 switch hitter (unless we find a left handed OF. We aren't keeping Mazara.) Not good. This is the most important reason IMO.

I don't see much bidding this fall, maybe until Feb or so. We heard the Mets lost $200M-plus so things will be slow until The Miracle arrives.

Grandal is a guy who catches 120+ games in a full season. If it was more a 90/70 games split McCann might have stayed but not to catch 40 games.
September 9, 20205 yr 2 hours ago, YourWhatHurts said: Why do we need a substandard defensive catcher to do this? We have the ability to add a bat at multiple other positions. We could add a 3B and move Yoan to the OF, add a LF and move Eloy to DH with Vaughn in a corner, add a RF and keep things as they are... Fantasy land. Moncada isnt going to the OF, Vaughn more than likely doesnt have the skills required to play the OF . Moncada was moved during the rebuild. You don't play around with permanent position changes once you're good.
September 9, 20205 yr Buy McCann an outfielder's glove. 1B depth: Abreu/Vaughn/Grandal C depth: Grandal/McCann/[Collins/Yermin] RF depth: Engel/Vaughn/McCann DH depth: McCann/Abreu/Vaughn/Grandal I trust Ricky to juggle this.

He has not yet proven that he can play any position at the major league level , including first base. He needs at least a full season in the minors.
September 9, 20205 yr If McCann would sign here to be the primary backup, with some DH as well, great. But he wants to be the #1 catcher and another team will pay him to be so. As was said earlier. we have to realize that he is gone after this year. Let's use him wisely the rest of this season and post season and get him a ring to take with him.

If they think he is ready, he will come up just like Madrigal did
