He is really on fire at Charlotte and he has the Major League experience. He is the most logical replacement for Madrigal, and they don't have to give up any prospects. If Sheets can supply a little LH balance to the lineup, he is the prospect who should be playing, at least until they get Eloy and Robert back. Totally agree with this. Give Beckham a shot over Mendick.

July 3, 20214 yr It looks like he can hit; of course he could devolve into Palka too. Regardless, he clearly has skill, so why was a complete afterthought until this year; did he develop that much in 2020 where no one outside the org could see? Did the org. even know what they had?

Not sure, but hopefully they let him play RF for as long as possible to see if he can pull it off. If so, it opens some magnificent possibilities with the roster.
July 3, 20214 yr When he hit the FB at the top of the strike zone for the homer last night that eliminates an area that other teams scouts will try to probe for a weakness. Most guys can’t hit that pitch. Especially the upper cut launch angle guys have no chance

The Sox obviously thought that he had potential. He was the second round pick in 2017, at #49. His junior year at Wake Forest, he hit 21 homers, in 63 games, with an OPS of 1.053. The problem has been that he was exclusively a first baseman, which is a position that is blocked by our MVP. Over the off season, he worked with his father, Larry Sheets to learn how to play RF. He also lost some weight, to improve his speed. Edited July 3, 20214 yr by Lillian

They also drafted Vaughn (who is going to be a great player for the Sox for years) on top of him. More of these guys should learn OF - increases their versatility, value and it's easier on the knees. That was one killer swing last night in the 9th. Edited July 3, 20214 yr by GreenSox

He had raw power, but his in-game power was dismal for a first baseman, but he was always a hard worker and was easy to root for. Then his game power emerged in Birmingham, but he wasn't putting up top prospect numbers (.266/.346/.710) and Vaughn was available. That prompted him to develop as a right fielder in Schaumburg. This year he began mashing in Charlotte and got more OF reps. The Sox gave him all the time he needed to develop as a hitter, power hitter, and fielder. They knew what they had, but it seems the rest of us didn't.
July 3, 20214 yr Author Can anybody think of a comparable player - one that was just decent in the minors, but really turned it up once they got the the majors? Maybe AAA was truly his turning point, who knows. He made adjustments to his swing to get more loft on it.
July 3, 20214 yr Ozzie Albies wasn't a power hitter in the minors then all of a sudden he's hitting 24 in the bigs. However he was only 21 when he hit 24 so it could've been perfect timing bringing him up when they did, if he got stronger and made some adjustment in his swing or approach.

Dude's work ethic has to be commended.

July 3, 20214 yr Author Gavin Sheets recent minor league stats actually look pretty damn comparable to his dad's stats in AA and AAA, at similar ages.

This is only his age 25 season. Burger is 25. this is Rutherford's age 24 season. Sheets is right in that age group to emerge as a productive big leaguer if that's in his future. July 3, 20214 yr Sheets, burger and Vaughn all have clearly gone on diets and worked on being serviceable around the diamond. The 2020 pandemic will forever separate prospects that had talent and those that have the desire to be on the Major league club. What a breath of fresh air for this franchise

Sheets in 3 years in the minors hit BA .281 OBP .357. With Abreu on the Sox, it's obvious Gavin playing coming up to play first base would be one of the toughest hurdles to make it up. It's obvious why they started making Gavin play right field. You can simply tell from Gavin's swing and patience at the plate, he will be a solid hitter for years to come.
