Chicago Sun Times: White Sox and their replay system need to sharpen up

Wake up, White Sox. That means the manager, too....

When it was suggested by a reporter that he might want to see for himself, La Russa said he would and that he was “curious” about it.

Michael Kashirsky is listed in the Sox website as a "Pre Game Instructor", and is the person named in the linked article as the person who reviews the replays, and discusses challenges with Jerry Narron. We are left to assume that Jerry tells Tony whether to challenge based on this article.

Why is it a shocker when we're not exactly on the cutting edge when it comes to modern technology, analytics, etc.?

Wouldn't have this problem if AJ Hinch were the manager ?

Perhaps, depends on who he brought in for bench coach and or the review videos. Jerry Narron isn't necessarily a spry chicken at 65 years old, young in Tony's orbit but a generation removed from A. J. Hinch and his peers.

One of several areas the Sox would definitely improve on would be defensive shifting. Hinch's Tigers are 4th in baseball, Sox 27th from last, with the Tigers shifting at just under twice the rate (38.4% vs. 19.7%). Not sure what unwritten rules intelligent defense violates in Tony's mind. The Sox under Ricky Renteria were just under league average, and (34.2% vs. 29.3%), and employed 48.7% more than Tony does it.

Would really help accommodate his platoon fetish and the terrible defensive "pseudo outfielders" (Lamb, Sheets) and Goodwin who ranks (423rd in MLB in Outs Above Average out of 473 total defenders).

Modern technology? Heck, I saw it on the TV replay!

The second one isn't even close. But that isn't on the manager. That is on the replay room.

The Hernandez play was close.  I think he was safe, but it might not have gotten overturned.

The second one was blatant.  The first baseman's foot was clearly off the bag.  Plus, there was nothing to lose by challenging it there.  A really bad miss by whoever was supposed to make that decision.

Steve Stone didn't help by saying over and over again how Hernandez was out and how great a play it was.  He even said a few times one the second play that it was "too close" until Mike Monaco said something about his foot clearly being off the bag.

yeah doesn't sound like these are any guys Tony had any hand in hiring - so ill absolve him of that.  However if he is reviewing these plays and thinking its not a problem after all season than he is part of the problem.

our replay system/team has been horrible all year.

There are challenges on plays that appear to be justified on broadcast replay that are then not upheld on review. I don't have time to look for a link because I have to work today but the reality is that close plays cannot always be determined by video replay.  AJ Hinch in charge of a video system? LOL. He should have been banned from baseball for cheating and has no business managing a major league team now, none.

And yet hes doing a terrible job at replay review, time to give it to someone else.

Know nothing message board idiot wants to fire guys.   I love this place.

Promote him to assistant to the GM and then get someone who can watch a monitor and make a phone call.

So you think anyone with the White Sox questioning him about not challenging is more than likely a no nothing? Looking at replays isn't very sophisticated.

This whole organization is incompetent from top to bottom and has been since Einhorn & Reinsdorf bought the team and promised a "first class operation."  The only thing they were successful at was bilking taxpayers to pay for their stadium.

This much seems obvious.  In a close game, it seems obvious that two extra outs could have made a very big difference.  It is also not anywhere close to the first time this has happened.  SOMETHING in the process we have is broken, and needs to be fixed.  I don't know if this is the protection of an information source or what, but it isn't a crazy leap of faith to believe that something isn't working right in this area.

Or Kelenic?  Both need a lot of spinning to justify...

Put him under Hostetler...or Buddy Bell.

The only explanation I can come up with is that Narron must've been talking to the Yankees replay room lol.

He should know the rule and not waste a  microsecond to know to challenge the call to end the 7th as there is literally nothing to lose by challenging that even if you are wrong.

Over-confident message board idiot wanted to trade Andrew Vaughn, Dylan Cease and Nick Madrgial for Michael Conforto before the 2021 season.

I love this place.

Fair take. Now don't you have an odd Jarred Kelenic-obsessed thread to update?

The second photo he was clearly safe. The first photo it’s hard to tell unless you zoom in on it but it looks like his foot is off the bag. If they were told to not challenge the plays than I don’t know what they are looking at. You got to take that risk especially if it’s a difference of one or two runs.
