Offseason Part 2 - Lets the Rumors & Action Begin

I hate to be the glass half empty guy, but this new deal raised the luxury tax threshold which probably gave some teams more money to throw at some of the Sox FA targets.

It also allows the Sox to spend more without having to worry about hitting the luxury tax threshold, which we know Jerry wouldn't ever cross.

  • He’s still great on tv.  He’s absolutely brutal on Twitter.  He’s a yes man and he’s a condescending jackass on social media.

  • At least they didn't get roped along all off-season only to get Manny Machado's friends and relatives. It could be a lot worse.

  • So I just got a text from a buddy of mine who is very connected (to MLB not necessarily Sox). Said Sox are on fire right now and close on a couple sizeable moves.

Does anybody think Jerry was going to get close to the old threshold, let alone the new one?

I think Bryant and Story are the 2 best FA fits left, but I'm not sure if Reinsdorf will want to spend on that caliber of player.

I could live with a Rosario or Joc Pederson type in RF if it meant the Sox acquire a high end 2B or SP option.

He already was close to it.

Don't have the exact #s in front of me, but the Sox were actually pretty close to the previous luxury tax number,  IIRC.

A lot of the extensions they've done count more against the luxury tax number than their salary for 2022.

Given that they're already at $194M they better get close.

I swear to god if they go cheap.........I will be in full force blast Jerry mode again

I will be full blast mode as well right there with you! This is one time JR needs to spend the money!

Eddie Rosario would suck unless he's coming to split LF/DH with Eloy.

This year is the peak of the window. Do whatever it takes.

The 2003 team could have won a WS if ownership wanted it to. You don't want that again.

Nick Castellanos or Kyle Schwarber could fit.

Definitely not my cup a tea of either, but he's a 112 career wRC+  vs RHP and would be acceptable (to me) as a platoon option assuming they'd make meaningful upgrades elsewhere.

It's not as good as adding a Bryant or Conforto type, but I think you can get to ~3 WAR in RF between Leury, Sheets, Vaughn, Rosario & Engel.

Schwarber and Eloy in the OF would be god awful.

Vaughn in a package for Lowe from Tampa would be ideal

Tampa is a scary team to trade with.  They don't lose many of them.

Rosario is Eloy/Vaughn bad in the OF. Absolutely terrible.

I honestly wanted him last off-season. I wanted them to grab another corner outfield bat to split corner OF and DH with Eloy and keep Vaughn in the minors for a bit. He would have been a nice piece to have post-Eloy injury lol

One them needs to be DH and not both in the OF.

Realistically, all the options after Castellanos, Conforto, and Bryant are huge gambles and all have glaring flaws. Pederson and Rosario are in the same league for me.

So we'd play who in RF? Engel?

I don't want bad outfield defense either, but if the Sox are going to lock themselves into it, doing so on cheaper guys like Rosario is preferable to me than spending up for Schwaber or Castellanos.

No arguments there.

It may be that they don't want to go after Conforto because they think Colas will be ready in '23.

I don't like the shitty RF D potential there, but I guess a Rosario/Engel platoon wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

Counting on Engel to be anything more than a 4th outfielder feels like a big stretch, for a variety of reasons.

They have to convert on a middle of the order run producer.  Castellanos, Conforto, or Schwarber.

Glad to hear you say Conforto. ❤️

I guess they could sign a Schwarber or Cruz type and then trade Sheets/Vaughn for somebody who can play RF.

Bryant an option if we don’t convert on those guys? Or is he too expensive?
