I don't think they would willingly not sign a star caliber player because there are 2 non top 100 prospects they feel pretty good about as potential RF options a year or 2 in the future

Yep. Imagine having to tell Conforto we really want you to pick us over the others but the best contract we could give you is a 4 year deal with club option in year 3 because we have two OF prospects who may be ready then. That is utter failure as a GM.

I do agree they need better defense. Hence the reason they needed a defensive 2B and a RF besides the 3 headed monster.

I've heard he's a 'long covid guy.' He sure raked in 2020 even if long covid is a thing. 

Buster Olney and Ken Rosenthal have both floated the possibility of Correa signing a 1 year deal. This would be pretty shocking, but maybe the demand isn't there for him to sign the ~300M deal he's looking for?
