ROSTER CRUNCH: who goes and who stays

Featured Replies

In 2 weeks, the roster has to go down to 26.  Who goes and who stays.  The good news is that with more depth than in the past, this is harder to do.

CATCHERS: Current=2; Goal=2:  Grandal, McGuire

OTHER POSITION: Current=11 + 2 on IL; Goal=11; Soon as Pollack and Moncada come off IL, two have to go.  Assumed roster locks: Pollack, Moncada, Abreu, TA, Harrison, Robert, Jimenez, Leury

2 of these 5 have to go: AV, Burger, Engel, Mendick, Sheets

It looks like Burger or Sheets will go (along with Mendick)

PITCHERS: can only keep 13 out of 20

current 15 + 4 on IL (Giolito, Kelly, Lynn, Burr) + 1 Potential (Cueto)

Excluding Lynn and Burr for now, that's 18 for 13 spots .  Assume: Giolito and Kelly available May 1st; Cuerto decision contract required by 5/15.

Roster locks: Giolito, Cease, Kopeck, Keuchel, Hendricks, Graveman, Kelly, Bummer

Only 3 of these 10 can stay -7 have to go: Cueto, Banks, Crick, Foster, Lambert, Reylo, Ruiz, Severino, Sousa, Velasquez

For the 3, it looks like to me:   Reylo stays; One of Cueto/Velasquez/Lambert; One of Sousa/Severino; Banks/Crick/Foster/Ruiz all go

For the love of god Burger and Sheets can't get off fuckin this team fast enough.

It is WAY to early to make the assumption that these will be straight forward.  There is plenty of time for other injuries,  slumps, and maybe even trades. Plus these timelines aren't all at once.

Assuming Giolito/Pollock are back and Lynn/Kelly/Moncada aren't yet, this is what I expect on May 1:

C - Grandal, McGuire

IF/DH - Abreu, Harrison, Anderson, Burger, Garcia, Vaughn, Sheets

OF - Jimenez, Robert, Pollock, Engel

SP - Giolito, Cease, Kopech, Keuchel, Velasquez

RP - Hendriks, Graveman, Bummer, Ruiz, Lopez, Sousa, Foster, Crick (maybe Banks instead of Sousa/Foster/Crick)

After May 1:

Lynn/Kelly/Cueto push out Sousa/Foster/Crick in some order

Moncada pushes out Burger or Sheets

People really need to get it in their heads that Vaughn isn't getting sent down in any circumstance.

Good thread. Burger/Mendick gone

As of right now, Mendick is the easy answer, and I'd send Sheets down instead of Burger. Yes, I know Sheets is a lefty, but burger can play more on the field and has looked farrr far far better.

Rinse, repeat.

I'd agree if Sheets didn't hit left handed.

This is one reason I hate the new 40 man rules in September, however.

Hard to assume guys will be back at the time rosters need to decrease. So as of now, it has to be 2 relievers since there will be a max of 13 arms. If Giolito is back, then Lambert for sure goes. For Pollock, Mendick goes.

Sousa is staying to be the 2nd LHP out of the pen.

It's going to suck for Jake, but I think Burger and Mendick go down.

If Sousa can repeat yesterday’s performance, yes please.

Mendick is the first to go down IMO.  Burger probably goes too as TLR just has to put Harrison & Leury in the lineup every day until Moncada returns.

Trying to project the May 2 roster. Don't think the Sox use a 14th pitcher right away. Nobody really worth keeping

SP: Giolito, Cease, Kopech, Velasquez, Keuchel

RP: Hendriks, Bummer, Graveman, Banks, Foster, Ruiz, Lopez, Burr

C : Grandal, McGuire

IF: Abreu, Harrison, Anderson, Burger, Garcia, Mendick

OF: Vaughn, Robert, Pollock, Engel, Sheets

IL returns:

Moncada replaces Mendick

Kelly replaces Burger.

Lynn replaces Burr

If Cueto is worth calling up, he replaces Foster or Velasquez

After May 30, Burger replaces Foster, Velasquez, or possibly a DFA Keuchel if he doesn't get better.

Whenever Eloy returns he replaces Burger.

Of course this all assumes no further IL usage which is incredibly unlikely.

Going to guess Foster and Mendick go.  Burr is already on the DL.

Can't imagine Severino survives the cut from 28 to 26.

Actually, I missed his name on the list and forgot about him.  Severino is first to go IMO.

Banks sure has made the most of his opportunity.  He is one of the few nice stories early in the season.

I projected Burr being back from the IL and Severino, Sousa and Crick going.

Severino, Berger, Mendick and Foster will go when rosters are cut down and Moncada comes back.

We have to cut down to a 26 man roster with Moncada, Kelly and Cueto also ready to come up.  That leads to the big question, who is going down to Charlotte or being DFA

I have to believe that Sheets, Mendick and Severino are givens, but who will be the other 2?

I'm thinking at maybe 2 from Foster, Burr, Banks and Sousa

Launch Keuchel into the sun.

Gonna imagine Severino is a gimme. Next spot will be interesting. TLR said 1 arm and 1 position player so it’s probably Mendick or Burger. James says Burger.

Sheets!!

I think Keuchel finally gets waived, opening up a spot for Cueto.  At least there's still a slight chance Cueto can perform...Keuchel is done.

Severino certainly goes and I'd imagine Mendick will join him.

Cueto threw only 60 some pitches on Fri and TLR said he needs 1-2 more starts. While I would have pitched him more Fri and made the change next start, I don’t think we’ll be so lucky.

Maybe with less choices we settle into some lineups that make sense.
