I don't even know if this team is a .500 club. They didn't play all that well against the Giants. San Francisco gave them those three games. 3-6 so far during this run against division opponents. Everybody is talking about an upcoming weak schedule. Those teams are no doubt looking forward to playing the White Sox.

This model hasn't been copied around the league because it makes no sense to fill out the payroll with unproven players when they could be on rookie deals while paying for veteran production. If anything, the Soxshould operate like the Rays.

At the time, signing Moncada, Jimenez, and Robert to those long deals was awesome. Now, in hindsight, its kind of like.... maybe we should have made sure they can play before we throw all this money at them.

It has worked out extremely well for the Guardians ever since the late 90's.

They were the organization the Sox attempted to copy in terms of a blueprint for sustained success.

Franco got a huge payday/extension.

You have to pay up for star quality young position player talent to convince the fanbase you're not going to just dump them at the earliest opportunity.

Otoh, distinguishing that Austin Meadows is not a star and can be leveraged for more cost-efficient youngsters.  

(They tried to do the exact same thing with Snell and Glasnow until he got hurt.)

It made all the sense in the world if they were to live up to their billing...otherwise, you simply will end up with just a two year window like the Royals as your talent all leaves in FA.

If there's one thing we DO know, it's that spending for other teams' free agents at top of market rates is not the way to go since they consistently fail to execute there.

Yeah, this year alone Moncada, Eloy, and Robert count 27 million against the payroll but could have been around 6-7 million if not extended.

I am not going to try and shit on this now though, I was a fan of the extensions at the time. Just hasn't worked out so far.

Unfortunately Eloy currently has effectively zero trade value, particularly to a rebuilding team. He’s due a decent amount of money (like $30 million guaranteed) the next 2.5 seasons but has not performed at all and has multiple injuries on his record. While he does have option years, they’re options for $15 and $18 million, so even if he turns into an average OF, keeping him is expensive. He’s another guy you just have to hold onto and hope he breaks out: rebuilding teams like the Cubs go for guys like Eloy when they’re put on waivers in a couple years. I’m sure you could get someone to take a chance on him, but not with anything of value coming back.

That’s a big “if.” So big that it’s usually  why we don’t see these types of extensions.
 

The Padres & Phillies are pretty happy with the Machado & Harper contracts!

Honestly yes, I would imagine he would have extended Beckham after his first season.

He threw like 11 90 mph fastballs down the middle and nothing to show for it... also hung some breaking pitches with no real penalty.
