Maybe, but we all know that Getz will have to trade Cease eventually.  Risking holding onto Cease until the deadline is one thing, but no argument can be made now that trading him next offseason would be more advantageous.  We have now almost been through this offseason and the offers weren’t there.  There is no way Cease is still a member of the Sox after this season’s trade deadline.

Based on the fact that he had 1 year of control, the Brewers are consistently willing to move guys like this, and Woodruff being hurt made their team on the field this year look way weaker. They moved Hader when they were in first place, of course they were going to be willing to move Burnes. It always made sense that they'd consider it. 

Insider reports aren't carved into stone tables. 

This really makes me wonder what the offers were for Cease at last year’s trade deadline.

OMG you know what? The O's could get another pick in that same range next year if Holliday comes up and does the same thing. They could have 1 compensatory late first pick in 2024 and 2 in 2025.

Seems like a very light return for Milwaukee.  This board would have melted down if Cease was traded for that package.

This is why the White Sox will actually have pressure to trade Cease at the deadline this year if he's healthy, because 1 year of control is worth a lot less than 2.

For one year of Burnes, BAL paid the following in SV per BTV: 4m (pick), 18.9m (Hall), and 13.6m (Ortiz).

Total: 36.5m

Burnes value for that one year is 33.3....so BAL paid a premium of about 10% for pitching. 

BTV has Cease at 42m....a 10% premium would mean about 46m in SV should be the return or almost exactly Woo, Montes and Clase (49m) from SEA, hypothetically.

Thinking the new ownership deal when approved by MLB includes commitments by the minority ownership group (they'll own 40% until Peter Angelos is dead) to commit to funding while they wait.

Cleveland completed a similar deal with new minority owner David Blitzer who bought 35% with an option to purchase the rest infused capital, though it doesn't seem as though Cleveland is willing to spend it. Fair enough…but I don’t agree it was reasonable to assume the Brewers would undercut a Cease market.  I don’t think they were committed to dealing him unless they got the right deal (and this gives them two major league ready pieces that can slot into their rotation and at SS) and I don’t believe all GMs like paying up for arms with just one year of control.

Kudos to Sports Guy and Rolle Tide for being right on Ortiz/Hall.

Corbin Burnes obviously a FA at the end of the year with a much higher salary than Cease.

 

Brewers fans have to be pissed after signing veteran Hawkins.

I don’t think this necessarily is a bad return for Burnes.  It’s just more quantity than quality.  Having said that, these pieces really wouldn’t work for us and we need potential impact talent (although Hall has some ceiling).

Were they right? I thought SG agreed with whoever was having that long convo that the return should be Cowser/Kjerstad and Ortiz, and not a bit higher until the bidding went up. 

Getz not selling short like this actually gives me a little bit more faith in him as a GM.

Hall may be nothing more than a long/middle reliever with his current walk rate.
