One of the final candidates is an old school guy in Nevin that announced to a Mariners player that he would be throwing at him in the very next game, and then used an opener to do it.  This doesn’t sound like a move that a sober manager makes, so apparently we may not be done hiring old drunk guys.

He also loves bunting and IBB’s.

He's just a crazy person.

The best part of a Nevin hire is that it'd be very easy to clean shop and fire him and Getz simultaneously.

In no world, does a 'well qualified' managerial candidate look at this organization and ownership, and think to themselves "Now that is a job I'll take if offered."

It may not seem obvious from our perspective but this could easily be a stepping stone job. Manage here for 2 or 3 years, get experience, the team looks a little bit better under you, and you move on. There's only 30 of these jobs, this might be one of the worst, but guys who look all right in bad situations are getting valuable experience, and it's a decent salary boost.

Or manage here for 2 years and never get another manager job again.  See Pedro Grifol and countless others that came before him.  A manager is only going to be as good as the players a GM surrounds him with.  I sure as hell wouldn’t trust Getz to be the guy to surround me with good talent.

I would a thousands times over prefer someone green like Santos to this Angels hack.

I think it would be smart, for now, to leave Santos where he is. Barons had a bunch of success last year, let him work with the new batch this year as well and we might have an actual pipeline.

Yeah but the problem with that is Grifol stank. Thats why he won’t get another job, he was an old school coach who let the team get out of control.

But even with that for him, he can go back to being a 3b coach or a AAA coach and this 3 year contract is probably the best money he will make in his entire career.

I feel like there are enough smart baseball people in MLB orgs that can identify talent and potential and separate the manager from the situation they’ve been put in.

I don't see the next manager lasting more than two years. I think the sticking point in negotiations will be length of contract. I can't believe anyone worth having would come for anything less than a four year contract, possibly five. I don't see Uncle Jerry agreeing to that.

It's a great time to become the manager of this franchise though. With Eberflus we are seeing how beneficial it is to be the coach at the same time as a GM that was hired around the same time as you. You get to make all the mistakes you want and not face the music. The GM has all the job security in the world (especially with Jerry as owner) so you are safe by association for a few years of expected badness.  He's Getz's first mgr hire

Let me also add, it's a great time to become the Sox mgr if you are a first timer, bench coach type..specifically. You are probably going to get long leash, 4 or 5 years (not all on one contract). So you pocket 5M guaranteed dollars instead of being a never-was. Really good teams are hiring first timers, paying them 1 mil per year, and firing them in 2 years..

also have to remember Pedro was hired for a win-now team. so he looked bad right away. the manager of this team is probably going to oversee a 15 win improvement because it is really really difficult to lose what we lost last year. you have to be bad and have bad luck (at the same time, all year)

Sure, except the last 4 managers of the organization, basically had no shot of being a manager anywhere else after their time with the White Sox.

Not because the White Sox made them look bad, but instead because several of them were terrible. For Grifol, he won’t manage again because he was bad, but he’s going to get a managers salary for 3 years. He will probably make more in these 3 years than he would in the next 10 otherwise.

We’re talking about Robin Ventura, who didn’t even want to be a manager. Rick Renteria, who was never a serious long term guy. An 80 year old Tony LaRussa who had no business whatsoever being manager. And Pedro Grifol who was flat out bad at his job. None of those guys fit the bill of an up and comer.

It’s not like we’re bringing in blue chips who all see their futures go down the drain when they put on the Sox hat. These are trash hires.
