Robert will cost either $2 million to get rid of via his 2026 buyout after this season.

Or, you have to guarantee Robert $22 million ($20 million option + $2 million buyout for 2027).

So unless he's Ohtani the rest of the season, JR is taking the buyout.

wouldn't he have been more valuable if they picked up the option now, before the deadline? and maybe eat some or all of it to get a better return?

Theoretically, yes.  I'm not current on how much a team can eat in salary.  It used to be anything over $1M had to be approved by the Commissioner's Office.  I don't know where that stands now.  That said, Jerry isn't going to eat $12M thru next year and that's probably the bare minimum (IMO) it would take to get someone to bite.

Yikes.. s%*# return for Mullins.

1) Given how stingy teams have been dealing top prospects the last two TDLs, especially hitting prospects, I’m still shocked LDV got dealt today for an RP (even if it’s a great one).

2) Gotta keep Robert at this point.

I wonder if Dodgers could jump in at the last second?

I mean if teams are viewing him as a rental and these are the rental prices it doesn't matter who jumps in.

Glad I was sleeping for the last four hours.

How do you not at least trade Houser, though?

Morosi an hour ago expects him to be traded still.

Frankly, not trading Tauchman for the good of the clubhouse is questionable too.   We'll see how positive and happy he is to be on this team for another round.

Tauch actively prefers to stay. He has an 8 month old with health issues and likes being near his family and support network.

With him also being productive on the field and a plus in the clubhouse, I have 0 problems keeping him. Maybe I'd send him across town if Cubs want a reunion, but I'm not pressed at all about missing out on some fringe A ball player return.

Not like he's blocking an OF prospect right now either.

I think this is a worthwhile consideration for both Tauchman and LouBob

Oh so that's the context. I've heard that Tauchman wants to stay and will likely stick around but never heard the reasoning why.

Like I said early, I would like to see a savvy move from Getz to restructure Robert’s deal before the deadline and extend him at a discount. He’s not worth $20M a year right now but it’s not like we’re getting his replacement any time soon. If you’re betting on him, keep him and work out a better deal.

Was the word that Getz was asking for 1 major leaguer along with 2 good prospects?  🤣

As he should have been. What’s the point of trading him for garbage if you can keep him for two more years?

I don't think LouBob would have much interest in restructuring. He's made a ton of money already which gives him every reason to gamble on himself going forward

But that's the question...will JR allow that type of payout for him, plus the risk of him having another dismal season or injury.

Given that, trading him for garbage may be better than getting absolutely nothing in return if the Sox decline his contract come October.

The problem with keeping Robert is you are essentially making a $20M gamble. He not only will need to stay healthy, but he will also need to produce like he used to several years ago now.

If there are no offers at all right now for him as a cheap rental, you aren't getting any offers when he's a $20M rental in the offseason which at that point you are now hoping he has an incredible first half. Then you are still facing the reality of trying to trade a rental OFer which as you have seen today isn't worth dick.

I still do not see anyway they exercise this option. It makes zero financial sense for the organization.

Plus Scott Boras is his agent.

$22 million at a minimum.  He has another $20 million option and $2 million buyout for the 2027 season.

While I am dubious as well, I assume if he isn’t traded they will pick up his option.  Why wouldn’t you accept a mediocre offer for him if you are just going to buy him out after this season?  Anything is better than nothing.

Cedric Mullins, Harrison Bader, and the current version of Robert aren't worth dick.  If Robert bounces back and has a good end to this year and a good first half next year, teams will pay for him.

People are really concerned about a $20M contract option next year?  What gives… Do you pay the Sox bills?

There is no prospect Luis Robert is blocking.   Plus, 99% of the roster is prearb/arb.

Trading Luis for peanuts is not worth the risk of seeing if he can put together a bounce back year next season.  Maybe he is apart of a 2026 wild card run.  Maybe he puts up a big first half next year and he’s gone.  Maybe he puts up a dud and is done after 2026 which won’t matter because there won’t be baseball in 2027.

I like Tauchman and I will never criticize someone for putting their family first.....unless that person's name is Dominique Wheeler.
