Yep. We want them to stop spreading limited FA money across multiple low ceiling guys, and just spend a little more for an upside swing? Well...

Yeah I won't be crying if the Sox have a player with the talent level of LouBob on the squad next year with a contract that has no negative impact on the team's future

Anyone who thinks Tony LaRussa brought anything positive to this organization this time around is truly derranged.

  • I may be in the minority but I have no issue with them keeping Luis. They have nothing committed to payroll next year and no one knocking at the door to be an every day CFer. Also, I would consider ke

  • Oh no. Chris Getz maybe asked for a desirable target in trade negotiations. It's truly unfortunate dialogue ends completely after one player is inquired about.

Well, you would be wrong then.  Wheeler has been to a WS, an NLCS, and an NLDS the past 3 seasons, and he has a shot at the postseason for the fourth straight season.  That’s history.  You are just speculating at what could have happened.

Speculating is all we have.

You and your facts can go to hell!!!!

Yeah, I don't think its a slam dunk.  But its a risk you can take if you have no payroll and no other options in CF.

If they sign a FA CF like Harrison Bader, what are they paying him?  The amount you are risking is the difference between that one year contract and the 20 million you are paying Robert.

Yeah I fully agree with that. The problem is I don't think we have an owner who does.

Is it bad that I laughed really hard when I saw that but also almost threw up my chinese food from lunch?

Totally fair.

Hell let's just start adding at this point and make a push for the wildcard. Seems like we could pick up some wild card veterans for some no name prospects. Pull a gool ol fashion KW and go get Verlander, McKutchen, Paul Dejong, Kris Bryant,

So we get to do this all over again in another 5 months? Great

We did this for Crochet and Cease. We should be used to it.

What if Robert finishes up strong, the Sox pick up his option and trade him with cash to pay a good chunk of his 2026 salary....what would a full year of a reduced price, healthy Robert be on the off season market?

Did you forget who the owner of this team is? He has a chance to eliminate $20M off the books for a player who is in no way shape or form earning that salary.

Its not my money, I dont care about it, but I understand the man who DOES care about it.

According to Spotrac, there is $47M on the books for 2026.  Another 1 year $20M contract before a lockout won’t kill any Owner’s bottomline.

Dodgers still make sense to me. They can't really plan on running out Conforto every day. He's been hot s%*# garbage.

Crochet and Cease were relatively short lived. Robert has been on the trading block for almost two years.

I mean I'm not sure if he really has been.

The Sox lost 121 games last year. They are 29 games under 500 right now. Not too shocking that no other teams want their crappy players.

JR aside, there is no owner in sports who is just going to keep an albatross contract when given the option to completely eliminate it, regardless of how low their payroll is.

Do people really think a financial shrewed owner like JR is going to look at this and go "Eh, just pay him $20M our payroll is low anyways and its not going to kill me".... come on.....

Padres out now

Definitely makes sense to evaluate whether the player is worth it or not, regardless of existing payroll obligations. That said, it's hardly an albatross contract. It's "do you want to pay this player $20M for one year with the option to keep him the next season at the same price." One year deals are never an albatross even if they can be a waste of money

Agreed. Jr and the Sox have moved on from all of Hahn's foolish early extensions to the "core". Gotta think they will do the same with Robert. Or maybe they try to pull another Kimbrel and extend Robert only to trade him a couple days before Spring training for another overpaid veteran like AJ Pollack.

Yes, but the player is not worth it, not the one we have seen for the last 2 years anyways.

I use the term albatross in regards to having to pay an underperforming player a $20M salary.

Of course it wouldn't, but that doesn't matter to JR. They can use that money elsewhere.

Exactly. If you have been paying attention, JR would much rather pay 10 players $2M each instead of 1 player $20M.

Can't just move Luis just to move him, if the offers are as bad as we've seen for other players. Sucks, because he's a dead man walking on this team, but....can't trade him just to say 'we traded him'.

Houser/Civale are the bigger mysteries.

So I guess JR really is willing to pay the 20m then. Cause if it was really a bluff u trade him at the last hour even for something smallish... but now at least he helps the team next year and we can try this again.

In today's game $20M doesn't get you much.  That can get you a guy with less than half the upside of Robert for maybe60-70% of the AAV, but you may have to commit multiple years.  I know Sox fans have soured on Robert - and for good reason - but $20M for him is not a bad number. If Sox (or whoever he gets traded to) buys him out (unlikely imo), I bet he'd easily surpass 5/$100M on the open market.

Nobody complaining about the market drying up would have been happy with any of those returns. Those were low end flyers for Mullins.
