Even if they're not taking him seriously....why the hell not? There is literally nothing blocking anyone here. For Christ sake they just need to go full Costanza....start doing the opposite of every natural instinct they have.

Agreed, whether they think much of Elko as a player or not, they may as well find out.  It’s not like he’s a young top prospect and you want to save his service time for later in the rebuild.  And they are already starting a bad 28 year old journeyman at DH in Maton.
