Free Tim Elko (Back in Jail)

You know it will be "unacceptable to the masses" because it's bat s%*# crazy and illogical.

Let me say it for the folks in the back. ANDREW VAUGHN HAS BEEN THE WORST PLAYER IN BASEBALL THIS YEAR.

Tim Elko would have more value on the trade market than Andrew Vaughn, for a number of reasons.

Your premise makes no sense

Vaughn might be worth nothing but if you can get him hot for these next months then there is a little something there. there is team control for next year so that brings in suitors that are smaller market teams that like that team option (of sorts).

We dragged the Fedde trade endlessly. Now a guy we got from that at the deadline is producing and the young prospect Perez is having a nice year. If Vaughn is worth a reliever with some control, ok, it's not much. But we talk about how the Dodgers pile pitching upon pitching, so we have to stop whining about our lack of a pile and try to put one on the pile. If we can get one.

You have high hope for Vaughn. Hopefully he can do something the next 2 months and be traded to a team looking for a platoon 1B at minimum, but if he’s still here Aug 1, DFA him.

The problem is this decision simply came down to cost. When they got in a room and discussed roster moves, Andrew Vaughn's salary played a major role in the discussion. And we're not talking about a player making $25 million a year.

Tim Elko has done everything he can do in AAA. He's 26, this team is one of the worst in the league, and the player "blocking" Elko has the worst WAR in the major leagues right now. Literally out of 1,112 players, Andrew Vaughn is No. 1,112 in MLB in 2025. He's had over 2,400 PA's with the White Sox in his career, and has totaled -1.7 WAR during that time.

Tim Elko will be a distant memory for MLB in 4-5 years, there is a more than good chance he's a AAAA player, will thrive in Japan. But the Sox have NO REASON not to find out right now...but simply don't want to swallow the $5.8 million price tag of Vaughn, because they don't care about the product they put on the field.

I totally understand your position. I am sure cost is a factor, but the reality of the situation is that Vaughns contract is a sunk cost. Keep him on the team, option him, DFA him… The money is still being spent. I think this has more to do with the ability for AV to create some semblance of value so that he can be moved within the next two months. If you DFA him, not only are you not getting any return, but you're eating the money for sure. As I said, I would have personally optioned Vaughn, but I also don't think Elko is a major league hitter long term m, so I'm not super concerned about it in the short term. Elko will be back later in the season.

No one is disagreeing that adding young pieces to an organization is a bad thing.

Erick Fedde had a 4.6 WAR in 121 innings with the White Sox. He was absolutely a valuable commodity in the marketplace.

Again, there has been NO ONE WORSE in the major leagues this season than Andrew Vaughn.

In 193 PA's this season, he has put up a -1.7 WAR. Last season, Andrew Vaughn had 619 PA's. So let's just do some easy math. 193 x 3 gives us 579. Fair estimate for PA's over a season. -1.7 WAR x 3 is - 5.1, which would far surpass the lowest WAR in a single season ever (Jerry Royster, 1977, -4.05)

That's how bad he's been. So please stop with this illusion of some kind of market for Andrew Vaughn, and that's what went into the decision to keep Andrew Vaughn on the roster.

Vaughn at this point has a track record of being bad, 1 or 2 decent months isn't going to change a team's mind.  It's not like he's Robert who at least has had some high level success here.  In the end, I highly doubt Elko is ever a good major leaguer but we already know that AV isn't one and it just makes 0 sense to send Elko back down.

There probably is little market, but youre arguing we want 0 over maybe-something. I would rather have a reliever than nothing, so what is the harm in trying?

People think Elko will be harmed by some more AAA time. I dont get it. How does that hold back his value? Was Eloy going to be better with 2 earlier months in MLB? No. He was always going to be this thing he became.

Vaughn better be gone before the ASB.

Man he should have been gone weeks ago. A negative WAR player in over 4 full seasons ain't going to suddenly turn into a solid regular magically. Vaughn is a bad athlete with a terrible swing from the right hand side. There's nothing there.

He shouldn't have been tendered a contract by the White Sox.

2026 Sox marketing campaign:

We still don’t 100% know what we have exactly in Elko, Sosa, Baldwin, Quero…because half the season was wasted playing vets/journeymen/AAAA guys over them.

Exciting stuff to look forward to, truly.

You "think" elko isn't a MLB hitter long term. We know Vaughn isn't

Seeing as how Vaughn isn’t even a good enough athlete to play first base, the fact that he was tried in the outfield just gets more and more insane as time passes.

Yea i don't think it's all development. some of it is just scouting. if you had a stop watch or a good scout that never would have occurred. I don't think it ruined his career but it didn't help and he was never going to be athletic enough to play anything other than an awful 1B.

corner OF in MLB isn't a spot you can just stick anybody. hell even a guy like Altuve struggles a bit. it takes years to learn how to play the various slices.

Elko used it a lot. I'd be getting Luis Robert Jr. using it as much as possible. He needs to get his timing back .Take lots of swing, think center of the field so a little early goes to left center and a little late goes to RCF .Gaps and HRs. Doubles and power.

Bump….this organization is a joke

I expected it , so did you probably. He only got promoted because of injuries not because they think highly of him.  Nothing wrong with being a RH Schwarber although that's much harder for a RH to do. He's always been a high average hitter in the minors .Done nothing but put up good numbers  and work hard. High character guy. A legend in Mississippi for his gutty performance.  I think it was Cannon I saw raving about him when they played each other in college on one of Garfien's CHSN podcasts you can find on YouTube.
