If this draws a big crowd it is a huge deal (will it?). As such you'd think the Pope would give the homily. Not that difficult to tape a 10-minute homily in Rome and play it on the scoreboard. Certainly the Pope knows about this Mass at his fave park.

Supposedly he will be making an appearance on the scoreboard. I assume it is being taped ahead of time.

Are we expecting a disco demolition type crowd in terms of size?

This is amazing, but I'm also a little mad that Brooks Boyer lucked into one of the greatest opportunities possible here.

It was very well done. Probably 20,000 in attendance. Interviewed a few of his teachers and friends that are still local. Had some video well wishes and stories. Cardinal Cupich asked some kids questions. Music by some different people and the Leo high school choir. Mass was in English Spanish and Polish at different parts. Played the Peruvian national anthem and the national anthem because of his dual citizenship.

Pope Leo's address was very well done probably 10 minutes long. Talk a lot to the youth and how they can shape the world.

One of the funniest parts is during the mass when everyone stood up and sat down at the exact same time you could hear the creeks of all the seats. Since it was quiet for mass the sound was really loud and everyone started laughing including the Cardinal.

Overall a very fun and interesting experience. First time at a mass in a ballpark, mass by a cardinal and hearing the Peruvian national anthem.

I hope this settles the issue of is the Pope a Sox or cub fan!

I think more young Sox fan rock 'n'rollers including me  wanted to see the Sox back then for a great price so me , one of my brothers and Dad went.

Less people want to go to a Pope themed mass in a ballpark. Ptatc said there was 20K there. Disco Demolition estimates vary. It was SRO and lots of people were turned away . Maybe more than 60K showed up. Plus it was highly advertised on WLUP the rock station promoting it. The Mass was a lot more low key.

The Sun-Times quoted estimates closer to 30-thousand.

Really? Many must have stayed on the concourse. The seats were not that full.

Everything I saw on TV showed the ballpark not close to being sold out, some seated on the field so maybe close to 30,000.
I’m sure if the Pope ever held a mass at the Rate, people would be hanging from the rafters but then again when  John Paul ll visited Chicago in October of 1979 a mass was held in Grant Park with over a million in attendance.

This is from the Sun-Times morning newsletter:

Ballpark Mass: Pope Leo XIV brought thousands together at Rate Field on Saturday for a Mass and to celebrate his papacy, marking a historic moment for the local Catholic community and a point of pride for the city. The event, hosted by the Archdiocese of Chicago, drew an estimated 30,000 people and included a livestreamed address from the pope. It was the pontiff’s first direct address to an American audience since being elected last month.

I love how this is taking on a life of its own and he's embracing it.

Cardinals are probably sitting there like "what the f***?"

St Louis or the Vatican?

Ben Shapiro gave his ball signed by the entire 2005 team to the Pope. Sorry but that is the last thing I've giving up.

the ticketmaster inventory was sold out. but, it seems, plenty of scalpers wanted to cash in on a $5 ticket.

I went to the mass with UICC friends from the Newman Center in 79 in Grant Park to see JP2.

Remember buying a John Paul II comic book...but it disappeared in the annals of time, unfortunately.

On a positive note, those old baseball cards were not thrown out at least.

Brooks Boyer should consider adding a Pope puff of white smoke behind the scoreboard after any home win.
