I doubt he was able to catch many MLB games over the last 30 years. At about 1:00 into this NBC News clip, the new Pope texts back to a priest who's known him for years where his Chicago baseball allegiance lies: https://www.nbcnews.com/nightly-news/video/pope-leo-xiv-is-a-chicago-native-who-led-augustinian-order-239203909684 (For anyone who doesn't want to open the clip, the reply from Pope Leo is "Sox".) 2

It looks a tad warmer and I don't see rain so game 1? Regardless its fucking crazy the new pope was at a White Sox world series game. I'm hoping it's game 2 because that game was insane and made fans for life. (Not to mention I could say I was with the pope at the world series)

Maybe the picture is him calling upstairs? 😅 There's a wider shot but still not a ton to indicate which game

I was just thinking on a light note: Think of the trips the Pope makes around the world and a lot of times he makes himself available in Rome to chat with groups that visit or priests and even the masses, the public. I'm just going by my vision of the Pope all these years, stoic, somber, blessing people, listening intently, never getting up and doing anything crazy like the Trump dance. What will it be like when regular people in line say to him, "Do you miss that. Chicago pizza and beef?" Or "How bout those White Sox?" Or "who is your favorite Bears player of all time: Wasn't Butkus just great?" How it the pope gonna handle being from America and now having to interact with Americans who stand in line to meet him? I doubt he feels it's too proper to discuss his favorite italian beef and sausage places or his opinion of Leo High School and is that why he picked the name Leo. Wat u think. Will there be too much a temptation to ask the Chicago pope Chicago things?

I believe he went to Mendel, so not sure if the Leo thing has anything to do with the high school. It’s a very traditional papal name. But I wouldn’t doubt that the connection occurred to him, and maybe it made it that much easier of a choice?
vilehoopster
The Pope and the various Cardinals have already entered into conversations with the Lord Above. The Pope and others implored God what actions need to take place to start to move the world in a better and more heavenly direction. So far, the Pontiff and the College of Cardinals have only recieved a three-word directive from God: Jerry, Equos Vende!

We see the picture of him at the 2005 World Series, so I'm guessing Paul Kokerko is up high on his list.

bmags
I really wish Farmer were here to see this. As a tangent to that, I really wish sox had put on a remembering Ed Farmer day. We lost him during the pandemic, and he was such a big part of those who grew up in 90s-2010s (even if you hated him never telling the score). Every time I pass St. Rita I think "Hey farmio" 5

BamaDoc
First, I am not catholic and nothing is meant to be insulting, inflammatory, or sacrilegious. The Pope is I believe chosen by God so God knew this man would be Pope. God has allowed the Pope's favorite team to be like this. Are the Sox the Pope's pain like Paul's ailment? Is the state of the Sox the Pope's penance or a means to keep him humble? If it is to keep him humble, are we screwed in the future? I remember Richard Dotson said the Sox were three players away from winning, "The Father, Son, and Holy Ghost". If we have the Pope are we closer to the other three? Could it be God doesn't care about sports? So many questions...... Again, all this is meant in fun.
vilehoopster
I don't know, but how many million miracle wins has Norte Dame had over the years in the shadow of Touchdown Jesus at South Bend? Just tons and tons of them. I gotta believe there's some help coming our way . . . . maybe just a little.
Kyyle23
What is most important here is that the new Pope was outraged when they changed Loretta’s Lounge to LaRussa’s lounge
77 Hitmen
Now that we've settled his fandom, time for a tough question for the new pontiff that will really fire up and divide fans: Should the Sox stay at 35th and Shields or moved to the 78? Or perhaps a new domed stadium in Dolton?
