Sox trade Andrew Vaughn to acquire Aaron Civale

Back to Civale. I wonder if he regrets his little tantrum that got him traded from Brewers.

Why? He gets to start every five days, work on his pitches and build his value for free agency.

Why?  Because his old team is in first place and most likely will be in the playoffs.

Civale has made about $15M in his career, so far. Any of us would retire this morning with that much in the bank, but that's not what these guys signed up for. Yes, I'm sure it's nice to be in a pennant race, but it's also nice to triple your insanely comfortable net worth over a winter. He's looking at about 11 more starts against MLB hitters to hone his arsenal and create a bit of a resume heading into free agency. If he stayed with the Brewers, he rots in the bullpen pitching garbage time, and there's not even a guarantee that he's on the major league roster September 1, let alone pitching in the playoffs.

They were going to send him to the bullpen to insert Jacob Misiorowski into the rotation.  Civale wants to start.

Civale got what he wanted — he has remained a starter and may still be traded to a team in competition for the postseason anyways.

I don't think he would have been used much with the Brewers out of the bullpen.  Probably eating a couple innings when the team was up or down big, not pitching in pressure situations, and not doing what he really wants to do - start.  He still might end up with a contender this year, but at a minimum he gets to start and hone his craft.

Realistically, by the time you pay taxes, agents, and everything else, about half a players career earnings are gone before they ever see them.

Most the board wanted to DFA AV. Half those people are now hand wringing. It's amazing.

I question that he keeps it up.  Doesn’t mean it’s not hilarious that he does this as soon as he leaves the lowly Sox.  He is possibly earning himself millions right now after he was sent to the minors by the Sox and looking like a non-tender in the offseason if he remained with the team all season.  That’s what is amazing.

AV can hit a little bit. He did it for the Sox at times too. But he can also go in long ruts offensively and provides literally nothing else of value. I'm glad he's succeeding, honestly. Chances are extremely high he is still a negative war player moving forward.

Chris Getz has to be using Vaughn's turnaround to juice up Robert's trade value.

He’s telling other GMs — “Hey, look at what Vaughn is doing for the Brewers!  Robert will do the same.  Players just improve when they leave our team!”  🤣

It’s only 57 plate appearances with his new team but he’s hitting like Bonds in his prime right now, not just a little bit.  I do agree that he will cool down eventually and his awful first half with the Sox will neuter his overall WAR on the season.

He raked again tonight. This is probably the first time as a big leaguer he's been relaxed and having fun. Happy for him. It makes you wonder why he was pretty pedestrian to awful in Chicago.

He did have good months at the Whote Sox as well, and his stats at the Brewers are a small sample. If he has turned it round full time then good for him and I hope he goes on to have a good career, it still doesn't change the fact that his time was up at the White Sox.

As for why he was bad for the White Sox the whole atmosphere around the club has been poor, and he is not alone as a young player coming into the team who has underperformed and a lot of expectation was heaped on him, and his development was not ideal. Some players do play better without the weight of expectation on them, at the Brewers he can just be one of the players rather than a first round pick who was expected to form a cornerstone of a rebuild.

Good for Andrew but didn’t Eloy start out hot with the Orioles last year too?

I thought he had a first good game and then nothing

And IIRC, it was mostly singles to the opposite field.  Vaughn’s swing seems so much simpler now and his eye at the plate is way better.

How did they immediately transform his eye at the plate?  Fixing the mechanics of one’s swing is something that new orgs can do fast, but teaching plate discipline to a veteran player in just several weeks seems incredibly far fetched to me.
