Robert stays...

Nightengale going after the Sox/Getz

"Sure, the White Sox didn’t get the offer wanted for center fielder Luis Robert Jr., who’s having another injury-prone, underperforming season. But guess what? No team shopping their position players got what they wanted either.

The White Sox not only didn’t move Robert, but now are planning to throw bad money after bad money and pick up his $20 million option.

If no one wanted Robert bad enough at his $15 million salary, why would they want him at $20 million? And what happens at next year’s trade deadline if they still can’t unload him? Would they throw another $20 million his way and pick up his 2027 option?

Please, make it make sense."

Guess we are finding out that Nightengale very much misses Kenny and Rick and Getz gives him nothing.

Also “other teams took lesser deals for their guys” isn’t a very good argument when he has two team options. It’s not the same as a full on rental.

That's why some guys run baseball teams, and other guys write down what people say and "report" it.

JR deals with Nightengale on a regular basis. One of the few media types he speaks to.

Maybe Dombrowski is angry enough to say what he had on the table for Robert.

It also doesn't take into account that each team is in a different situation that has to be factored into making a trade decision.

Is it me or does it seem like this guy plays to the level of the team around him? He would have been a homerun of a get for a contender.

Sounds like somebody not employed by the White Sox is really mad the White Sox are hanging on to Robert. The more Nightengale goes off, the better I feel about not trading Robert.

Luis might be one of the biggest vibes-driven players I've ever seen.

Is "lesser" better than the nothing we are currently sitting on for the past two seasons?  Because so far betting on Luis Robert has only benefited Luis Robert.

It's weird because, while I completely agree with this, his one great season was on a 101 loss disaster of a team.

But this time will be different.

I hear you, so much time missed because of injuries is a major concern.

It seems to me that he is 100% dialed in with the effort and desire to win, something clicked, he is looked up to by all the youngsters on the team.  If he gets a power surge with the bat it will change the dialogue.

If they traded him Getz would get ridiculed for getting fleeced, Getz doesn't trade him and is a chump.

Maybe because of the expectations that were put on the team? I honestly don’t know.

If I had to guess, it's cause his friends were still around, so he might have been doing whatever he could to try to put the dying embers of that team on his back and keep the band together.

That's the scariest part of them all.  This is about as healthy as he has been since he was 18.  91 out of 112 games played is a ratio he has done exactly once in his professional career.  This is a large part of what you are betting on if you pay to bring him back next year.

I mean I'm taking his recent health as a great sign. The number one indicator of new injuries is prior injuries. That he's basically had nothing more than a minor strain this year is a positive. To me he looks like a guy that's learning how to protect his body better.

I have enjoyed the last month of Robert tremendously. It isn't every year the Sox have a player capable of putting up 5-7 WAR, even if it's mostly just unrealized from injuries and slumps. If he keeps playing like this he'll return a decent package either over the break or next year.

Look, I absolutely hope I am wrong here, but I have worked in the trading industry for going on 30 years.  Sunk Cost Fallacy and the Dead Cat Bounce are things for a reason.  Could he have finally figured something out at 27?  Sure.  Is it more likely that his history going back almost a decade is more accurate than this 2/3 of a season than we have played?  Odds are way higher this way.

It probably depends on WHY he was getting injured. Was it not taking care of his body in terms of preparation, stretching, etc.? Or was it just because he is an injury prone guy and will always be that way?

If he made actual changes this year that has led to the mostly healthy season, then that’s encouraging. I have no idea what the answer is, but he does seem to look better running to first and stealing bases. It could easily be my imagination, but it looks like he’s running less gingerly. Maybe that’s simply because he’s not nursing an injury.

That a lot of shekels for uncle Jer to pony up unless Ishy is chipping in. Poor Robert doesn't know whether to krap or scratch his elbow. I know he gets paid a lot to deal with this.

Ozzie was saying on the postgame show 20 mill is nothing nowadays. Jerry is so wrong for this line of work. The owners caused this salary escalation mess dating to when Steinbrenner had to have all the good players and upped the ante. If you can't pay the ridiculous salaries, sell Jerry, sell. 20 mill for Robert is pocket change nowadays.

Yep, agree with all of this. I believe he nursed injuries and ran 100% out of the box senselessly in years prior. Bad combo. He probably didn't want to come across the wrong way to a manager that didn't communicate with him in TLR. I hope Veneble has told him his most valuable skill is availability.

Using the sliding gloves has helped as well. He was constantly tweaking his thumbs prior. Injury can strike anybody at any moment but he's trending up as far as health.  He's only 28. These days he's still got 4-5 years left in his prime.

Was Robert playing better because he was motivated to get traded? I am interested to see how he finishes the season. His defense is still stellar and fun to watch.

Robert has always said he wanted to stay

What’s he supposed to say? I was really hoping to get gtfo of here. I wanted to go to a contender.

As I said yesterday, the dude seems to play to the ability around him. Add a couple pitchers and a power bat in the offseason and who knows? Maybe we have a fun season or at least can use him as a trade chip next July.

(thanks Ishbia money!)
