Man, this was great. It really did satisfy the itch I had for the Sox to just declare that they did still want to be a baseball team.

Looking forward to my big boy swinging out of his shoes.

What a wonderful change. Last year out 1b when you stared into his eyes was like looking into an abyss. And he sucked.

But looking into murakamis eyes I see mountains. Our big boy is going to crush or die swinging. Down with the nerds. Zrate, vectors, dimensions. Big boy hit ball.

It's nice to be a fan of a team that makes a move like this while seeing fans of other teams publicly say things like "That's too much for unproven talent" or "I'm glad my team didn't pay this guy".  Meanwhile we know they're pissed.  $17 million committed for two years is a risk you take every single day.  The Sox desperately need power, and this guy could bring it in droves.  The marketing rewards alone will likely pay for a lot of the contract.  This guy is huge in Japan and will have a big following in the US, too.

I wish I was giddy about this.  The only positive it is someone new.

He's not a proven MLB player.

If he fails I understand why Reinsdorf is reluctant to spend money.  The organization is not good at scouting in the big leagues.

If he is a success after one year I assume they will trade him. That's the typical pattern of budget teams. Small market fans are so conditioned to this.  Those fans can never have nice things.  I think that really hurts baseball.

Presser at 11 on CHSN

"Could have been a press release" was something pretty funny I read. Sox have so little to be excited about... the comparison was hosting a signing press-conference for Jorge Polanco.

Either way, hope Mune proves all the haters wrong and mashes like the Japanese Prince Fielder!

Probably a lot more coverage in Japan even at 2 am in the morning...

Weird not to have on the Sox website.

Good roll of the dice for the White Sox, and I do not mind it only being a two year deal at all. Sox do not have a similar profile in their minors.

While his power is plus plus, nobody knows how the hit tool will translate vs. MLB pitching. If he does not produce, his money is off the books pretty quickly, and the Sox are unlikely to contend for the divison in 2026 or 2027.

If he is good, he becomes a trade asset or possible extension candidate longer term

Yes, high profile Japanese talent Jorge Polanco. Totally the same thing.

Per Chuck Garfien, Murakami is donating 100 $100 grocery gift certificates to the St. James Food Pantry as well as $10,000 to the Food Pantry.  The Pantry serves people in need in the neighborhoods around the ballpark.  This guy is already awesome.

Cutting into that $1 million signing bonus already.

He was making $4.5-5 million for Yakult and at least doubling that with endorsements.

I think it was more about the similar salary levels and the brighter spotlight of the NY media on the two teams, in comparison to Chicago, that actually fields a competitive NFL team these days but has largely forgotten the White Sox.

I realize he has a lot of money, and donating $20,000 isn't going to hurt his wallet.  My point was he's already doing something for the community around the ballpark.
