For Grant, it's just sample size more than anything but also we gave him a couple save chances when he was really on a roll. Grant is close to that but I'd probably just play matchups until Grant strings together a couple good outings.

They do a lot of matchup targeting as it is, but it can snowball when someone gets into unexpected trouble. Like if Grant Taylor has a cleaner inning tonight, the pockets fall differently for the rest of the game.

Since that's an extra up/down already, they can't use Hudson to face Bazzana leading off the 9th...who only gets another AB at all because Taylor faced 7 batters instead of the 3-4 they would have planned for.

With Newcomb down, they don't have the depth for a surprise extra trip through the top of the order LHB. Cap tip to Murphy for at least limiting the damage to enable the walkoff in regulation, but they need to fill the hole in the rotation in addition to any BP moves they make.

We can’t keep going into the well with Seranthony closing. Two big failures back to back. He is a setup man at best now. IMO.

I think tonight was the final straw. I only want to see either Taylor or Hudson in the ninth. I actually think Hudson has been our most consistent reliever this year. I'm willing to cut will some slack as he is a new manager. Just hope he learns

Was a bad send but also looked like Acuna slipped/misstepped rounding 3rd…wasn’t a lot but was absolutely the difference between him being safe or out.

Either way with no one out and the big bats up you can’t have the guy gunned down in that situation.

Many here had this team losing 100 games again this year. Most of the sports listicle media had the Sox ranked 29th or 30th coming into the season. People couldn't resist pointing out that we were looking at a historically bad OF. I would say that Venable has this team playing above their heads. I think they're really a glorified .500 team who may will themselves into the playoffs.

The team just came off of an insanely good run against the best teams in the game. There's a bit of letdown. They're missing a huge presence in the lineup in Mune. Pitching depth evaporated in the last year. He's running with a 3 man bullpen, and a 2-1/2 man rotation.

Venable makes mistakes. I'm starting to come around to flipping Dominguez and Taylor. Pinch-hitting Gonzo today was weird. But mentioning Venable in the same breath as Grifol is outrageous.

Nice to have Tristan Peters casually leading the team in doubles (one might say the banana man splits the gaps?) with a 120 WRC+.

With him at 2 WAR already, Sox are on pace for more 4+ WAR position players this season than in the previous 5 combined.

Attended the game tonight. Still cant access this site unless im home so I was eager to read this bipolar and manic gamethread.....it did not disappoint.

Props to Murphy for holding them to just one in that situation.

Peters was a nice, free pickup. It will be interesting to see how this team rations the playing time next year between Ant-man, Peters, B. Monty, Pereira, Baldwin, and Acuña.

You make some good points especially about the comparison with Grifol. The thing is that no one knew that the Sox would be contenders so the inexperience of Venable is hurting, he is basically an OJT manager which would be fine if the Sox were a 70+ win team which most of us all thought they would be this year but right now we are contenders so when Venable makes a bad move it is magnified. Getz gave him a lousy bullpen so there’s that.

My feeling since day one that the hire of an inexperienced manager was a bad move with a team made up of with a lot of kids, I thought a hire of a veteran would have been better.

I actually think this is a good bullpen but the amount of stress they've been put under this year already is unsustainable. Thankfully bullpen arms are the one commodity at the deadline that usually aren't too hard to find

The nice thing is the Sox have built a good up the middle group with Teel catching, Colson at SS, Meidroth at 2B and Peters in CF. Now if we only had a decent bullpen.

I Like it. If Chapman is cemented into the closer role, then Dominguez, Taylor, Hudson and Newcombe become setup men. That's formidable.

Ozzie opened last night’s CHSN post-game show with two things I totally agree with. His first comment was he felt like they lost that game and second was that Will should swap Taylor and Dominguez ... at least for the time being. The numbers/stats are there. Right now each is better in the other’s bullpen role.
