Honestly same. I expected more than Thome from the HS ranks. I guess the question is did they grab guts who slid, or are these the guys they shoved down to pick?

I dunno about you guys but I think it's pretty sweet to be in first place and also have the first pick in the draft.

Mispronouncing the #1 overall pick's last name is HUGE cringe. Jesus f*** Manfred.

Well they were drafted basically where they were ranked. To pay them overslot is to reach. I hope they are right.

And yet another funky-delivery guy.

That's really not how this works. We tell you that every year, but still you persist like it is an NBA style where slots are locked in.

Isn’t the third kid a high schooler as well?

Prosek? I thought they were college. Good to know then.

He is 19 and not 18, but yeah he is a prep kid.

Catching up on the game I missed. Brooke said Roch was in the house and in the locker room for the Braden walkoff game. How cool.

Must be pretty rare for a 1OA to be able to watch the team compete in their draft year and reasonably expect to be teammates with many of the guys they're watching.

Feels like most teams picking 1 would be in line for so much more flux in the roster/standings.

Shoutout to @DirtySox for sharing all these scouting reports/tweets and your general draft insights that a lot of us dummies don’t have. Appreciate you.

I don’t know. I heard somewhere he was a tool.

Lots of good named left for tomorrow. Should be another fun one.

Appreciate the analysis. @WhiteSox2023 was getting ripped into for having this opinion. I feel the same way tbh.

I think I'm a bit "meh" at the moment. I'll be underwhelmed if they don't come away with some high upside prep dudes tomorrow. Roch is a great pick, you can't mess that up. I don't hate Thome, just was hoping for something a bit more impactful. I love the Prosek pick a whole lot. I understand the need for Volchko in the mold of a Grant Taylor/Gabe Davis type. Segura is whatever. Not super inspiring to me. Need to see the whole picture after day 2.

Just listened to Doyle's podcast recap for day one. Some notes below on the Sox.

  • White Sox did what he expected them to do.

  • Expects the Sox "to get real splashy on day 2."

  • Heard Roch will get 10.5. Grady getting 10.

  • Prosek is a pro hitter. 4th in the country in home runs. Can play SS, C, OF.

  • Volchko gonna get you with 3K RPM breakers and could pitch in the bullpen right now. 🙃

  • Segura is a model darling. 4 pitches, low launch, great fastball/slider combo. Fixing his sequencing could be low hanging fruit. Starter profile.

What do you make of the White Sox taking Roch Cholowsky with No. 1 pick?

There were three good options that would feel like the right choice here, so it was hard to make a bad call on draft day. The challenge here for the White Sox is if this will look like the right pick in one year, then in three or five years. You could argue Cholowsky has the lowest upside of the group and the highest floor, but that would be splitting hairs, because all three of the top prospects are a coin flip on overall talent, with slight variations in risk, floor and upside.

Lackey and Cholowsky will get there quicker than Emerson -- I think that, along with overall risk, was a factor here. But the White Sox didn't just play it safe: They might have an everyday, sometimes All-Star shortstop in the big-league lineup as soon as the end of 2027. Scouts mention players like Dansby Swanson and Alex Bregman as comps.

Who are the best available players for Day 2?

40. Archer Horn, SS, St. Ignatius Prep HS (CA), Stanford commit
49. Sean Dunlap, C, Crown Point HS (IN), Tennessee commit
59. Blake Bowen, CF, JSerra Catholic HS (CA), Oregon State commit
72. James Tronstein, SS, Harvard Westlake HS (CA), Vanderbilt commit
79. Martin Shelar, CF, Marist HS (GA), Mississippi State commit
80. Dominic Santarelli, LF, St. Joseph Catholic HS (WI), LSU commit
81. Joseph Contreras, RHP, Blessed Trinity Catholic HS (GA), Vanderbilt commit
84. Malachi Washington, CF, Parkview HS (GA), LSU commit
85. Alex Weingartner, CF, St. Augustine Prep HS (NJ), Penn State commit
86. Bo Holloway, LHP, Christ Presbyterian HS (TN), Vanderbilt commit

Yeah I can’t fathom why the below exact same opinions were received differently

Sox probably could have taken Bo Lowrance at 34 and Thome at 41. That’s what happens when you blow your load too hard over one of your employee’s kids.

I’d really like Joseph Contreras tomorrow. I know it was a small sample, but I was impressed how he held his own against the Avengers USA lineup in the WBC. Get the kid more seasoning and I think he can grow into something good.

Law liked day 1 for our Sox.

White Sox among teams that had strong first days

The Chicago White Sox had a tremendous draft. They had the No. 1 pick, the second pick in every round afterwards, added pick 34 in a trade on Friday night, and they have imported a ton of talent already with Rounds 5-20 left to come tomorrow.

They grabbed the general consensus No. 1 prospect in UCLA shortstop Roch Cholowsky, two high-upside high school hitters in Landon Thome and Cole Prosek, and a project with upside in Georgia right-hander Joey Volchko. Their last pick, Oregon State right-hander Eric Segura, is a sinker/slider guy who could be a back-end starter if he can reduce his platoon split.
