Choose your fighter!

  • Player A: 33 yrs old | 7.77 K/9 | 2.89 BB/9 | 1.44 HR/9 | 5.06 ERA | 4.82 xERA

  • Player B: 33 yrs old | 6.51 K/9 | 3.17 BB/9 | 1.76 HR/9 | 4.13 ERA | 4.61 xERA

Let me guess:

Player A = Fedde

Player B = Castillo

If you took out Boston Smith, maybe the trade would make some sense. I can’t fathom how taking on a worse contract than the one we gave up required us to give up a legitimate prospect. I don’t even

Other way around.

😆 Great minds…

You know we’re trending in the right direction when Jerry agrees to trade his favorite asset to try and help the club win.

Everyone about trading every great kid in the system for some mediocre JAGs. ‘sah matter with youze? People had their sights way too high. We got a body, and that’s all the Sox were gonna be doing. 2027 is the year. Wait for Thorpe and Smith in the meantime

I'd be surprised if the Sox went for the best available and said so before the deal went down, that's not the way they operate under JR. As far as the second part of your comment, you're assuming of course, they even play in 2027.

No guarantees.

This deal didn’t need Boston Smith quite frankly.

Getting anyone to take that contract was a bonus for the M's.

Think some people are looking at the name and not the stuff and results. Castillo was moved out of the rotation at one point this year, and he wasn't happy about it. We did Seattle favor, so just odd we had to give up anything.

I don’t think they should have had to given up Smith but a portion of this fanbase thinks every prospect is going to be a Hall of Famer. This is the first bad season of Castillo’s career and they had been jerking him around with the piggyback stuff. I think a change of scenery might help him.

Look what private equity/Jared Kushner almost did to the World Cup ... not to mention the B10 media rights package!!!

Kushner and Whitkoff are still not done lighting the world on fire

I give it a T for ”Thank you for your service Luis”

really enjoyed watching him pitch for us from 2022-24, but it was already starting to be a watch-through-your-fingers experience last year. I hadn’t expected another team to be willing to take all of his remaining salary; on top of that Dominguez can hopefully still be a decent reliever and we got a couple other players too. Hard to be too mad about this.

Assuming there's nothing else in play here, this is an A for me. I was fully prepared for them to part with a semi-noteworthy prospect to get someone to take his contract. Frankly I'm pretty floored right now.

First, I love Luis and I will miss him. When we traded for him, it was the sign we were starting to go in on building a ball club for a new era of contention. He had a fantastic rest of that season and was solid each of the next few years. When he was on, he was fun to watch and carried a cool-headed confidence that I admire. We rode him about as far as we could. This is the first year it just really wasn’t working.

I have been dreading having his contract hanging around our necks next season considering where he’s at. The fact the Sox are taking on all of that money is a huge win for us already. Taking on Seranthony Domínguez’s money for this and next year offsets that a little, but it still frees up a bunch.

Nolan Jones is a warm body outfielder.

Boston Smith is actually a sleeper prospect that I’m astounded we got included in the deal. This is his first year of pro ball, and he’s done nothing but crush in the minors. He’s not ranked that highly, and he’s already 23, but he’s a "catcher" who has been mashing and walking constantly.

If it means they're going to reinvest the money they save on Castillo? That gets an A.

I'll reserve judgment until then.

Suppose this saves us from trading Hancock who has a lot of control at much lower cost, so that should factor into the grade. Saving Luis’s $$$ could be big for alternate use next year or perhaps still here at this deadline to re-allocate.

(They also get to insert Logan Evans/Logan Gilbert and Kade Anderson/Sloan piggybacks into the rotation.)

Seriously doubt this.

My concern is Castillo is 33 and the Sox are now on the hook for additional years. Maybe it won't matter if Ishbia takes over sooner rather than later.

Why would you doubt that we’re trying to land a big trade target?

Don’t want to give up our main prospects

LCast 25-28 homers last 3 full seasons. Pitching half the time in Seattle. He's gonna hate The Rate.

A week ago, last Friday night, Ser was awful and a big part of our worst loss of the season. 2 good outings and now he’s fixed?

And f*** Kimbrel

To be honest the f*** Kimbrel was more the point. I have no problem with Dominguez being gone...he just had a much better attitude is all.

I don't much care about what the Sox gave up - Boston Smith I would've rather used for someone better but its not a huge deal. Getting rid of Dominguez makes Castillo more like 12 mil next year. He was a mistake and I'm glad they got rid of him. Nolan Jones is whatever.

What's alarming is Castillo has been BAD. As I posted earlier, the Baseball Savant pitch values reflect his poor performance so it's not fluky either. He's also leaving a pitcher's paradise and a team that knows how to handle pitchers. Feel like this isn't going to work out too well for us. Sure hope I'm wrong and the Sox can get him back to even a 4 ERA guy.

Didn't Castillo have a top tier changeup? What the hell happened to that? He still has good fastball velocity.

Same here. I am one of the biggest Boston Smith Stan’s on this board and my biggest issue with the trade is with Castillo himself. His numbers are almost as bad as Fedds’s! And it’s not like he’s still in prime…his stuff has been gradually declining the past few years. This just seems like a low upside but costly gamble.

To grab onto a healthy 33 YO MLB pitcher that has a pretty good record, aside from having a bad year right now, you might’ve overpaid because of his contract. But if the Sox were gonna overpay , at least they didn’t damage the system they’ve started to build. I was worried, there were all these people lining up to put everything on the line for 2026. This is a relief.

The overreactions both on here and Twitter are insane and I am the king of overreactions here.

The Sox gave up nothing in this trade besides Smith. The vast majority of this fanbase wanted Dominguez gone for awhile now. Castillo isn’t what he once was, but he clearly fills a need here and sending Dominguez’s contact the other way evens out the money a bit.

They still need another starter. But I think the people saying the Sox got fleeced are crazy.

He's given up 16 homers this year. He would have given up 2 more at the Rate based on Baseball Savant's expected home runs.

100% agree. How the f*** did Seattle have the leverage to demand a prospect in this deal?

...because the asking for starting pitching is as insane as reported...?

That’s the thing, this likely hurts 2027

I really don’t think this hurts 2027 one bit. We should have a lot of spending room and I also believe that Castillo can be one of the best number 5s in baseball.

Wouldn't shock me if the Sox keep Noah around and/or possibly sorta play matchups with that spot in the rotation.

Anyone got info on his advanced metrics and stuff. Very curious if there is something Sox think they can do to unlock / get him back to what he was…I know his FIP is better than his era but it still isn’t good.

North-Westeros

The only Castillo fan lol

"I'll admit my bias. Yes he was traded for but he agreed to an extension here. He actually WANTED to be here, so because of that again, I understand, I'm biased.

With that out of the way, tell me again about the MLB wanting a salary cap to make things fair? Because last year, the most Googled team in baseball, which drew great ratings and revenue, just dumped the pitcher that basically kept your unit together through injuries LAST year, for all that and a bag of chips."

Yet to see any of the main baseball guys on Twitter say this was a good deal. Even Nightengale and Jesse Rogers seem puzzled.

I never understood why the fact that there might not be baseball in ‘27, that increases the desperation in 2026. It’s not like baseball will be gone forever
