Sox would've signed Harper or Machado for something like $300mil+. The Sox consistently have higher payrolls than the Tigers. It's not a matter of "affording" it's more likely a matter of the previous front office thinking it wasn't worth it to invest that much money into one player. "Looking at history" is why this board is always wrong.

The Sox have been high bidder on players who had a market. They've extended guys like Buehrle, Danks, Lynn, they won bidding on Thome and Dunn, matched Konerko's market offer from the Angels. They also tried to get ahead of the market and wrap up guys like Yoan, Eloy, Robert and TA7. Didn't work out, but they sure spent that money.Do they pull in 3 top FAs every off-season? No, that would be bad business. It's stupid to keep filling the roster with guys at the top of their market for contracts that demand top dollar for 1-2 healthy seasons, then 4 more under average ones. We'll see what Getz's model looks like, but I'd imagine it's develop from within, then fill holes.Signing the largest contract doesn't have a banner that hangs forever. Championships do. Championships do.Aside from the last few years, the Sox had higher payrolls. The problem has been they spend money on the wrong guys. They could have paid Machado or Harper and were apparently close on Machado. Other than reportedly being in on Machado, they haven't been "in" on major free agents. I think it's less about the dollars and more about the length of contracts.

"Looking at history" is why this board is always wrong.Since when? Going back 10 years (11 seasons) the Sox look like they have been higher than Detroit 4 times (20/21 and 23/24, and have the top 3 highest individual season between the two teams. This past year alone Detroit is $120 million higher. Detroit has had a payroll over 100 million dollars MORE than the Sox twice during that span, including this season of about $120 million greater, and $70 million greaters in 25, under "this administration"

Could it be that Sam took it upon himself to position himself in short left field when the team wanted him playing deeper? I have heard some small chatter about that. Interesting
