They give up a draft pick for that contract? Stupid, stupid.

Do they give up a first or 2nd rounder? If he has a good year, the give him a qualifying offer, and they get a pick after the original first round. If they are giving up a second rounder, if he performs, they get his services for a season and basically trade a second round pick for a comp pick.

Next year the FA pitching market is going to be a lot thinner when many of the pitchers on the board ink extensions. If he pitches well, this will be a win/win for Santana and Toronto.

They give up the 9th pick in the 2nd round. It's one of the lowest picks you can possibly give up by signing a free agent.

By lowest, you mean latest, right? Sometimes the low/high terminology can be confusing in a draft context

Not exactly jumping for joy in Toronto over the signing.

By the way, he fired his agent last week (the one originally projecting a $100 million contract). Santana is representing himself.

The other team in it is Baltimore, with Santana supposedly waiting until a 5 p.m. deadline for another team to swoop in and take him away from Rogers Centre.

But Santana is not without his own question marks. Though he has pitched more than 200 innings five times in his career, his medicals reportedly suggest potential for an elbow injury. He threw more sliders last season — a pitch that is believed to strain the elbow if overused — than any other pitcher in the majors.

He is also a fly-ball pitcher, which could be dangerous inside the homer-happy Rogers Centre, which averaged the most home runs per game of any American League ballpark. Santana has also been inconsistent throughout his career. Though he enjoyed a bounce-back season with the Royals last year, in 2012, he was among the worst pitchers in the majors, posting the fifth-highest ERA at 5.16 and giving up the most home runs (nearly two for every nine innings pitched).

He didn't fire his agent.

Is Micker Zapata in minor league camp?

Not sure... but I can tell you that Scott Merkin told FS he's going by Micker Adolfo now. Apparently this is a paternal/maternal name thing, but many players from LatAm take on the more American paternal last name when they get here, which he apparently has. So you won't see the Sox using the Zapata part of his name.

Many times the players decide who should go where...

Daryl Van Schouwen ‏@CST_soxvan 25m

Third base prospect Matt Davidson 2-for-18 this spring. Both hits doubles, today's a warning track fly ball lost in sun. Three Ks.

All it takes is for him to get hot and that changes real quick.

Given the roster crunch and service time stipulations, the likeliest outcome has always been for Davidson to start the year in the minors.

(If he were to hit, both of those would be poor justifications for keeping him in the minors, however him not hitting well so far could make that point moot. That said....him hitting poorly in ST was sort of the best option...which is a really weird situation to be in).

I honestly don't think either is a poor justification even if he hit well in the Spring. It's still Spring Training. These numbers mean absolutely nothing. If you can save money and keep a player for a longer period of time by keeping them in the minors for an extra 30-60 days, I'd do it every time.

Yeah I wanted Davidson to make the team for selfish reasons. The best course of action is for him to go down. Charlotte infield with Davidson, Sanchez, and Semien is quite exciting actually. Can Leury Garcia play 3B? It doesn't seem like Keppinger will be able to play 3B with his shoulder and Gillaspie should never face LHP.
