Whitesox sign Kevin Pillar to Minor League Deal 3M if he makes the club
Exactly. It will take years for the Sox to field a good team. Jerry was flat out lying about contending immediately. Smart fans like yourself know better.

Orioles Acquire Corbin Burnes for Ortiz/Hall/34th Pick
Ironically, didn’t Madrigal actually improve? He was pretty mediocre at 2B for the Sox and somehow he played well defensively at 3B for the Cubs last year, even with his awkward mechanics and weak armed throws to 1B.

I know Gallo sucks but how does Pillar get $3 million guaranteed if he makes the roster and Gallo only gets $5 million? Pretty sure I’d rather have him than Pillar for $2 million more. Sure seems like Getz overpaid here.

Who? It’s pretty obvious the Sox aren’t looking to spend any more than $3 to $5 million on any one player. I have no doubt Pillar is their main plan for RF on opening day. You may as well guarantee him the $3 million.

Yes, it’s the same pipe dream as it is every year. I could actually see AV and Benintendi improving but we all know Moncada and Eloy will be injured at some point in the season, if not the majority of it.

This makes me wonder. If the Sox acquired MLB ready talent in a Cease trade, like a RF and/or 2B, would they even be playing in the majors this year or would the Sox have them in Charlotte? It sure seems like Getz wants to play these crappy no bat / all glove veterans. He must dream about a lineup of 9 David Eckstein clones just like Jerry.

I wouldn’t put money on it if I were you.

Kevin Pillar has agreed to a minor league deal with the White Sox that will pay him $3 million if he makes the team, according to MLBTR’s Steve Adams. Pillar is probably being assured of a roster spot here, but the White Sox will be able to wait until mid or late March to decide who gets bumped for him. Ideally, the White Sox would have signed someone better to serve as a caretaker in right, but at least Pillar will be content with a platoon role if Oscar Colás develops. If Colás fails to progress, Pillar would be a fourth major offensive liability to go along with Paul DeJong, Nicky Lopez and Martín Maldonado in the bottom half of the team’s lineup.

Twins to sign Santana...
He will continue to hit bombs against the Sox.

Oh, I know Hahn was even worse with that offseason in which he essentially burned $40 million, but Getz hasn’t been much better. Here’s some of his one year signings that I don’t see how they even move the dial at all for the Sox. That’s $20.5 million total on a bunch of trash for the same team that was afraid to pay Bryce Harper $25 million a year. Predictions on the combined WAR from these guys? John Brebbia $5.5 million Nicky Lopez $4.3 million Martin Maldonado $4.25 million Kevin Pillar $3 million Paul DeJong $1.75 million Chris Flexen $1.75 million

Great points about anti-tanking. So at this point, the way I see it is that at bats are truly valuable. See what some younger guys can do. Also, if they avoided signing all of these vets this offseason, why couldn’t that money be spent later when they are more competitive? We were always told “the money would be spent” when Hahn missed out on Machado/Harper. Why not treat the money the same way, see if any of your aging prospects can perform, and spend the money when you have a team that is closer to being competitive? No other team shows much interest in Pillar as a fourth outfielder and we are talking about starting him in RF in a platoon with Brett Phillips. How low can you go?

Getz’s entire offseason has been signing veterans that are either old as hell and/or (mostly “and”) were terrible last year, and they weren’t even all that cheap! He signed a bunch of guys as starters that would be bench players at best on any other team, and they probably didn’t deserve much more than a minor league contract. I’ll take my chances with guys like Colas, Perez, and Sosa potentially sucking over Pillar/Phillips, Maldonado/Stassi, and DeJong/Lopez sucking for sure. We already know these veterans suck and/or their days are numbers as major leaguers. Why bother playeing them?

The irony is that this would have been a pretty good signing back when both Leury and Sheets were playing the outfield for our contending White Sox. ?

Okay, then trade them all for low A lottery tickets. At least that would be a strategy that makes some sort of sense. Don’t just keep them around as organizational filler to start games at AAA. Organizational filler can be found everywhere. I can’t wait to watch these veterans win 10 more games then some youth to finish the season with 70 wins.

Colas is 25. Sosa is 24. There’s a difference between these guys and rushing a Montgomery or Ramos who are much younger. We already know AAA at bats are no comparison for MLB at bats. Let these guys sink or swim in the majors. Every at bat that a Maldonado, DeJong, Pillar, Phillips, etc. gets is a wasted at bat in a non-competitive season. This team is going nowhere no matter who starts. You also aren’t getting anything of value at the deadline, even if one of these aged bums has a miraculously good start. There literally is zero upside to playing these veterans.

I never said to spend big at all. My point is, why even spend at all on these guys? Let Colas prove himself in the majors. See what Sosa can do. Sink or swim. We already know that the majority of the veteran players that Getz acquired suck, so why even waste money, time, and at bats on them? What exactly are you buying time for? You are wasting time in a losing season in which you can figure out if your young players are worth a damn.

Sheets is pretty much worthless other than as a bad lefty backup 1B that will occasionally run into one. My point is, what is this strategy even supposed to be? They will be terrible either way. Why not see if you can salvage some young players for the future as either starters or bench players by giving them at bats in a lost season? That way, Getz may not have to waste $3 to $5 million on all of these terrible bench players.

Seriously, save all the money Getz wasted this offseason dumpster diving for terrible veterans, put it in a vault, and spend it later on something worthwhile. Not this collection of crap. Is anyone really excited to see Martin Maldonado behind the plate instead of Carlos Perez? DeJong and Lopez over Sosa? Pillar over Colas? It’s ridiculous.

Why? How does this make any sense? I understand making young players earn their way to the roster but the Sox have all their cards on the table and they have absolutely nothing for RF, SS, 2B, or catcher. How does it make any sense to waste at bats on Pillar and Phillips over just letting Colas play and either boom or bust? Why do bums like Pillar and Phillips deserve at bats over Colas? Because they are veterans? They are bad veterans! They are already a known quantity of suck. At least there is some glimmer of hope that Colas could turn into a decent player. I don’t understand how the Sox run their awful team and I probably never will.

I don’t think Getz has shown interest in such a player yet.

How many negative WAR players has Getz acquired this offseason? He must be looking to set the record.

Cue the Getz in dumpster image (I can’t find it.).

Likely. More dumpster diving. Dude is 35 and can’t hit. It really sucks being a Sox fan. I’d rather watch Colas get at bats starting on opening day than watch at bats be wasted on this old bum.

Why is he all for it? Does he love QBs that can’t throw the ball and go 10-28 as a starter for your team?

Indeed. The worst of the worst.
