  1. QUOTE(KipWellsFan @ Feb 1, 2006 -> 08:57 PM) http://apnews.myway.com/article/20060202/D8FGN4900.html Yes, that is why it absolutely drives me nuts when these hearings go down and people in Congress pull the dog and pony show of grandstanding and asking questions that really can't be answered. There is a solid history of supreme court justices going against what people thought they would. Most of these judges are reasonable people who look at the facts of each case presented to them and judge them accordingly. In the long run Alito may end up being extremely conservative, but it would not shock me at all if he ended up being moderate, it happens, these people don't have to run for reelection.
  2. QUOTE(vandy125 @ Feb 1, 2006 -> 09:20 AM) You would have to think that Cuba would have already thought about their players trying to do this. I would guess that they would try to put something in place to ensure that it does not happen. What that would be, I have no idea. The government probably makes it real clear that all the players families are back in Cuba.
  3. I imagine his role would be very limited, even more limited than his TNA appearance. I think when he did the last wrestling appearance he wasn't under contract with the White Sox, they only had arbitration rights on him, now he's actually signed with the White Sox.
  4. lol, at least the NBA was smart enough to give a ton of chances for marijuana, because half the league would be gone if they were harder on that.
  5. QUOTE(Reddy @ Jan 23, 2006 -> 08:23 PM) i agree, if we made this move then people would be praising KW for the "low risk high reward" move that kenny loves to make. i like the move if i'm a cubs fan Sure, Miller has good upside and it is cheap, but if I'm a Cubs fan I still look at the rotation of Zambrano, Prior (which is obviously a very good top 2), Maddux, Rusch, and Williams to start the season and see glaring holes. Miller and Wood can come back by may, but then again they may not come back for awhile, and then there is what Baker said at the Cubs Convention that they don't know if Wood will come back as a starter or in the pen. Hendry said after this move that the Cubs are done with pitching moves, which would concern me a little if I was a Cubs fan. Is it a bad move? No, like you said, "low risk high reward," but if KW does it he would be the 7th starter or a right hander in the pen along with Hermie and Cliff.
  6. QUOTE(hammerhead johnson @ Jan 27, 2006 -> 12:41 PM) And that's another thing. Doc Rivers isn't cut out to coach young players. He's like the NBA's version of Dusty Baker. He has zero patience. yeah, i was reading Bill Simmons take on this (on a side note, I think his normal columns have gotten a touch stale, and the slurrping of Schilling that was posted this week made me stop after a few paragraphs, but he is one of the few people who write really in depth on the NBA) and he mentioned Rivers has played all 12 players on the roster multiple times in the first half!! That is crazy to me. An NBA team should really only have an 8-9 man rotation IMO, and to play all 12 guys just creates a cluster and poor flow in a game.
  7. QUOTE(kevin57 @ Jan 27, 2006 -> 03:34 PM) I still wonder if Frank wouldn't have complained about some other aspect of how he was treated. I agree with you, it seems he would have complained no matter what Jerry and KW did. If it was a phone call I think he would have complained it wasn't a face-to-face, and on and on

QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Jan 27, 2006 -> 04:09 PM) ....and he's pretending to LUUUV it, that's even funnier. The sad part is, that s*** will probably sell. I have to remember not everything that gets on the radio and consumed by the masses is trash you are most likely right about it selling. That's why I have a love/hate relationship with the MTV shows like Making the Band. They are great unitentional comedy, but I know that the band will end up selling a ton of their CD's. However, any show that has Aubrey O'Day on it gets a pass in my book. Like that new "There and Back" show focusing on one of the guys from O-Town who is now trying to be a serious singer songwriter after he pissed away all his money. This is really the first time MTV is editing a show to kind of goof on the star of the show in kind of a mean way. It really is worth watching because this guy has no clue about anything. The show highlights songs "he" wrote (the he is in quotations because magically he comes up with a finished song after meeting with professional songwriters, much like Ashley Simpson did) and they are the most ridiculous 8th grade girl lyrics. Those shows are definitely my guilty pleasures.
  9. I don't like to really divide who is worthy of being a fan of something or not. How do you judge that? I've seen people try to say the dirtier the hat the more hardcore fan the person is, so what, I have to wear the Sox hat I had when I was 5 years old to prove I'm a real fan? People who like to point out how big of fans they are seem to want to draw attention to themselves and actually take away from the team, like the Cubs fans who wrap themselves in ivy and garbage like that. A lot of people aren't going to be as passionate about the Sox as many of us are, but that doesn't mean they can't be a fan, and I agree with the original poster, the fanbase should welcome new fans.
  10. Yeah, I've defended Frank a lot over the years, but this stuff really bothered me. I've loved Frank since he was in a Sox uniform, and think he just has a bad way of handling press, because I use to work at Oakbrook mall when Frank had his house out here. I've run into him a number of times over the years, as have many of my friends and he has been nothing but an extremely friendly person. Now, to read this is really dissapointing. Listen, I would have loved Frank to end his career with the Sox, but at this point in his career and where the Sox were, it wasn't a real option. I know Thome was hurt last year, but that was his first major injury in many, many years, and Frank has been struggling with injuries over what, the last 4 years? Maybe Thome will never recover and that trade will be a bust, but personally I feel more comfortable with him than Thome at this point. To add a positive story about Frank, the first time I saw him out in public i was probably about 12 or 13 and was with my father. While other people were going up and asking for autographs and such my father wouldn't let me because he feels (as I do now, and if I ever have children will do the same thing) that celebrities should be allowed to go out in public without being bothered. I was wearing a Sox hat, and we were pretty close to where Frank was, he wasn't mobbed or anything so he noticed that I was a little upset and kind of overheard what my dad was saying. So he actually came over thanked my dad for having respect for him and he signed my Sox hat and took a picture with me, which I still have all these years later.
  11. With NBA trades you have to look at the salary cap hits... one of the contracts being traded might be off the cap at the end of the year, thus making a real s***ty player worth a ton (Tim Thomas is an example of this). Not 100% sure if that is the deal with this trade, usually one of the papers will break it down.

    Student Loans

QUOTE(Heads22 @ Jan 26, 2006 -> 03:59 PM) Ugh. Loans. The nice thing I have going at ISU is my work-study job. I worked 3 hrs a week @ 6.50 and had more than enough money to cover incidentals that semester. I started with 200 in that account and it's around 400 now. At the beginning of my second semester, I was able to switch to have my current 4 hours a week credited against my student loans through the university. It's 26 bucks a week, just change, I know, but even something like 300-400 bucks that I don't have to pay back later on my student loans is gravy. Through scholarships and parents help I was able to get out of Elmhurst with no loans, so I have my law school loans only. The interest rate that is fixed on my federal loans are great, the private is a little high, but you have to think about years 10-20 of paying it. When it gets to that point time value of money really kicks in.
  13. This was my main problem with the way high school has been structured with my experience (about 12 years since i've been out 8, so was there 4). WAY too much emphasis is put on grades. I wasn't the best HS student in the world, probably had a B- average in HS and that was because there were a few classes I took interest in and got A's. I always tested high on all the placement tests, so it was VERY frustrating to my parents. But they made sure I flied right in my social life and let me take my own path. I ended up graduating with honors from College and made it through law school. Maybe the academic route isn't for everyone. I agree finishing high school is key, but too much emphasis is put on everyone attending college when it is not for everyone. I have many friends who didn't go to college, barely passed HS and are very successful now. i don't mean this to attack you Juggs, you seem like a smart person who knows what is best for your family, but thought I would give my opinion since you posted it here. Best of luck!

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jan 26, 2006 -> 10:42 AM) Sallie Mae is pretty solid. You can manage your account from beginning to end on-line. Yeah, I've had good experiences with them. They constantly send you paperwork, which is a good thing so you can keep track of your stuff. They're easy to access and talk to a live person when calling.
  15. Bust: Astros- I think coming off the World Series and bringing back roughly the same team they'll struggle. I think Clemens will sign with them when he can, but Bagwell's situation is a nightmare for the team and Biggio is another year older Sleeper: Brewers- I just like their core of young players and how they got them some experience last year. Like the Koskie move and they finished over .500 last year without Sheets pitching a full season. Also, they can take advantage of that division. I think the Astros and Cards will take a step back and the Cubs are relying too much on major question marks.
  16. Unfortunate news, however if you look at his physical appearance over the years it was obvious something was wrong.
  17. has there been anymore on the Abreu rumor today, other than what was in the Philly paper?
  18. QUOTE(Brian @ Jan 23, 2006 -> 09:20 AM) They'll be back next Monday. They are on "leave" for two weeks. I guess they played a "controversial" bit a few weeks ago and things have happened as a result of that. Neither of them have been fired. do you know if it was an off color bit, or was it the Bruce Levine incident I mentioned some posts above?
  19. depending on the President's schedule they will likely try and schedule this when the Sox go to Baltimore, if that doesn't work, probably another East Coast trip or maybe right before the season
  20. The thing that intrigues me the most about this move is Benson with Mazzone (sp?) as his pitching coach. This guy has done wonders for pitchers who had a world of talent and haven't reached it for one reason or another... could be interesting
  21. This is just a new spin on the "back to Africa" movement that's been around a lot. Obviously this is a little more hateful than the rest. The best parody of these movements is in the movie CB4 with the Baba Ach character.
  22. QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Jan 21, 2006 -> 10:19 AM) Is Oscar the balding fat guy who has great one-liners like "I picked myself in the secret santa gift exchange"? I think that character's name is Kevin. He's also real funny.
  23. I wonder if this has anything to do with Silvy really going after Levine on the air in the last few weeks. It was more than the normal kidding around, he was really calling him out for flip-flopping on his position regarding the Cubs and their willingness to trade Prior. It's not like he just brought it up, he was playing tapes to prove his point and really calling out Bruce. It stemmed from Silvy bringing up the situation of him changing positions and Bruce absolutely denying he said what he said the first time, and Silvy didn't have the tape at hand at that point. Levine was really being an asshole to Silvy about it. So when Silvy finally got the tape he was really laying it on. Not sure this is the reason because I don't know why they would punish DeFalco for this since he was going out of his way to protect Levine during the whole thing.
  24. I LOVE the U.S. version. That hour with My Name is Earl is my favorite TV night of the week. Steve Carell is hysterical on the show. Last night when he tried to comb his hair like Jim's was hysterical. The two funniest things I've seen on TV in awhile were the Booze Cruise episode when Michael was dancing and the episode where they talked about him having his jeans drycleaned and showed a montage of him dancing around in jeans.
