QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jan 18, 2006 -> 01:06 PM) This is the same place I would put a NASCAR thread, why not?

it's what whitesoxfan99 posted, it was made famous by an episode of Family Ties when Alex's longtime girlfriend was leaving for good

Now Antonio Davis went into the crowd to apparently protect his wife

Took a criminal justice class in college where we visited a couple of prisons, and luckily for him it's county and not state. Now I'm not saying county jails are country clubs, but usually they are a little more controlled as far as gangs go. I don't want to scare you away, but honestly they are no fun to visit. They will make you cheerish your freedom, that's for sure. The smells, the dreary colors, it really is depressing. Be prepared for a little shock the first time you go. However, I do think it is important for you to keep the spirits of your friend up, if he knows he has support from friends and family maybe he will use this time in prison to turn his life around.

QUOTE(HighHeat45 @ Jan 14, 2006 -> 11:36 PM) The parents are saying that they warned the police it was most likely a fake gun. Well in that case.... unfortunately the kids parents didn't pay him enough attention to notice he most likely had some emotional problems. This is a horrible story, but the officer did what he had to do.

QUOTE(TheDudeAbides @ Jan 14, 2006 -> 01:20 PM) who cares? Well, this is a general baseball discussion and I thought it was news... so to answer your question... I do... -
Just listening to some radio today and Offman from the Clown Convention this weekend had tape of Baker saying Wood may start off in the bullpen.... when he starts, they have no idea when he will be ready, Offman said it looks like best case scenario is sometime before May.

Diamondbacks sign Luis Vizcaino to 1-year deal
SoxFan562004 replied to SSH2005's topic in The Diamond Club
Good luck to Viz, he contributed in game 3. I wouldn't be suprised if he has an OK year, he's the type of pitcher that benefits from more work IMO. When he has to much strength his stuff straightens out, but when he has normal work it moves more... -
QUOTE(rventura23 @ Jan 13, 2006 -> 04:38 PM) arent you a little concerned that there was so much uncertainty after he was put to death. Im not arguing in favor or against the death penalty but I think that if there can be enough debate (even if he is found guilty) of whether he is guilty or not, there is cause for alarm I really don't think there was that much uncertainty, like I said, after reading the book, which was in favor of him, I still felt he did it. He had the standard appeals process and the Govenor took a hard look at his case, and still decide to go ahead.

OK, this guy was one of the biggest question marks of someone who has been put to death. Advocates really trumpted his case. We read the book about him (Sorry, don't remember the title off the top of my head, I'll will edit when I come across it) in my Federal Habeas Corpus class, and it was basically supporting he was innocent. While my teacher and classmates were very open minded during discussions, I was the only one who really thought he was guilty after reading the book. The book glances over many obvious facts and stresses a lot of circumstantial evidence. I was also very uncomfortable with the way they totally scapegoated a few people in the book, basically accussing them of the crime. I don't mean to assault anyones opinions on the death penalty, I personally support it, but obviously want to make sure guilty people only are being punished, and it's a bit of a vindication for me and a lot of supporters that these tests came back the way they did. Obviously I live in a state that showed there can be flaws in the system, but I feel those can be safeguarded against. My professor for this class, Andrea Lyons, is a wonderful attorney and does great work in this field and I respect her greatly.

man, i know what you mean, I stopped after Civ. II because these things are so great, but just kill so much time. I had II when I was in College, and there would be times I would fire a game up at about 8 p.m., and the next thing you know it would be 4 a.m. I switched to consule based sports games, those won't put me in an 8 hour time warp, NCAA Football is my favorite as well as all the Tony Hawk games, except those were becoming a little easy for me.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jan 11, 2006 -> 11:49 PM) How can James Andrews proclaim Bagwell unable to play if he just had a heart attack 3 days ago? "To that end, the team has asked Bagwell to visit orthopedist Dr. James Andrews' office on Thursday in Birmingham, Ala., the Chronicle reported. The deadline for the insurance claim is Jan. 31." that's the quote from the article, so I assume that means that one of his associates will perform the exam since it says his "office." I know a few of the WWE wrestlers have been going in there the last few days, so I assume his office is up and running...
-
If you read further in the article it says they want him to go to Birmingham AL to meet with Dr. James Andrews so he can declare him unable to play. The deadline is Jan. 31 for them to file the claim.

I think more will follow, espically guys from teams with a chance to win this year. The more names that drop, the easier it will be for other players to do so, I think we definitely saw that with Japan, once Matsui said no Ichiro and Iguchi soon followed.

Good article. When I was on the treadmill yesterday I glanced up and noticed footage from this press conference and was very confused. I couldn't believe the Cubs were having a press conference to announce Jaque Jones, it all seemed really silly to me since he's basically going to be a carbon copy of Jeromy Burnitz. The thing that topped it off was a quote from Jones basically saying he's not going to hit 40 homeruns and explaining his limitations... The whole thing was classic Cubs.

Brick's Pizza is the only place in Chicago I know they serve it right now.
-
Yeah, that's a tough call. I would say it's not worth the fight, switch classes and write a letter to the school board about why you switched. If you chose to switch, don't feel like you are caving in or anything, there's bigger battles to fight, and you won't be satisfied if you fight this one since he's probably a pretty entrenched teacher and a lot of your classmates will likely side with his views and you won't have much support. Southsideirish71, man that story sucks, I went to Elmhurst, which is a very liberal school and I'm middle leaning towards the right, but at least they offered generic religious history classes with very fair professors. (As a side note, Elmhurst has something like a 6 to 1 girl to guy ratio, so every class had a gaggle of hot chicks ) Soxman, don't let this one teacher shape your opinion about these classes though. I have had many classes like this with very liberal or conservative people, but they were open to actual adult debates, didn't resort to name calling and didn't base grades on your political views. My contracts teacher at law school was one of the biggest liberals i have ever met in my life (she teaches at Berkley now!!), but she is one of the greatest teachers I have ever had, I can stress how much respect I have for her, even though our politics were very different. These classes can be very satisfying and extremely informative, so when you move on to college, ask around and you'll get a read on professors. Teachers like this get off on the laughs they get for those simple jokes and aren't worth your time or effort.

QUOTE(The Critic @ Jan 9, 2006 -> 03:37 PM) Oh, was that today? I hadn't heard anything about it.... While I still don't miss Stern, I have to say that the few minutes I was unfortunate enough to hear "Rover" were absolutely unbearable. Oh Lord, what a waste of airtime THAT show is. Predictable, lowest-common-denominator, bottom-shelf garbage. Man, you are right on about Rover, I figured I would give him a chance and it was horrible, I couldn't even listen to it for more than 10 minutes. I knew it was in trouble when they were promoting it with something along the lines of "Give us a chance, you won't like us at first." Morning radio in Chicago kind of sucks now that Howard is off, I can't listen to North, Mike & Mike use to be good, but lately they have been absolutely horrible, I can tell they have started scripting a lot more exchanges. I will listen to the Drive or Johnny B for awhile, he's been OK since he came back. I like David Stein on the Score, but he's only on until 5 a.m. and a national show. Also, I know Carolla is podcasting his show, so I'll give that a chance, but I know seeing message boards that has been a bumpy road so far too.

my suggestion is to look at the criteria for degrees and see which one has the broadest class options. Personally, I went to Elmhurst College, which is a private liberal arts college, and I have a degree in psychology, but the College encourages you to take a lot courses in different areas. I loved that opportunity to study many areas.

This doesn't shock me at all. Listen, I have a ton of respect for female athletes, they could whoop me at their chosen sport, however, when playing males with skills in those sports they will get beat. If there was checking allowed it would have been a much bigger span than 2-1. I have gotten into major arguments with people about what would happen if the UConn woman's B-Ball team would play a boys high school team with any decent level of talent. The guys would simply wipe the floor with them. As great as female basketball players are, all the men would have to do is turn it into a track meet and be physical on the boards. The Jenny Finch thing with her pitching to MLB players on the weekly show is misleading IMO as well. If the MLB players warmed up for a few minutes they would hit her well. To back this up, when Finch was on Kimmel's show they had her pitch to Jimmy and Cousin Sal, now they obviously struggled, as I would, but the guest that night was Warren Sapp, who, while not a baseball player is a professional athlete. He fouled her off immediately, and not tippers, he was fouling them straight back. He was also doing this in dress shoes. On a side note, this obviously flustered Finch and she attempted to throw him a change-up on about the 6th pitch to fool Sapp, but it didn't work.

QUOTE(BobDylan @ Jan 5, 2006 -> 12:26 AM) The Mets could be contenders given Glavine has a good year. Benson and Zambrano are solid, but not difference makers by any means. However, with a line-up like that, they'll be able to hit over the mediocre starts those pitchers will have--though not many. I guess the bullpen needs some work with only Wagner and Sanchez, but adding Billy Wagner will strengthen most bull pens. The only I don't think he would help are the White Sox, Yankees, and Astros (given that he was closer). IMO Wagner would help any bullpen in baseball, he is a top 5 closer

New Tejada News: O's reportedly make a proposal...
SoxFan562004 replied to maggsmaggs's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I just read the tribune article about the Sox and O's Tejada talk, and it's amazing how much they favor the Cubs, and now I know I'm not just being a paranoid Sox fan. The writer was saying things like Sox fans can "forget" about the trade etc... but any slight word that the Cubs may still be alive in talks they run with, it really is amazing. I've learned the last few years to completely disregard whatever KW says to the media and expect anything -
Yeah, I know a lot of people think they overpaid for Wagner, but it's a NY team launching a regional network, they have money. I really think the Delgado deal was one of the better deals this offseason, I've always thought he is an excellent player.
