  1. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 08:16 PM) I dont understand how people can be packing it in for the season when we are 5 games out. If we are still this far out going into the last week of the season I will still have hope we make the playoffs. Once you are in, anything can happen as evidenced by the Cards a few years ago. i'm never ready to pack it in this early and frankly i'm not sure how well a pronounced firesale would go over with the fanbase, particularly when the team is not far out, playing without tcq, and has mostly not hit when many people think they will. that said, i did not think this team was a legit series contender from the outset. i felt like some guys who's years powered us last season (floyd, danks, tcq to be specific) would come back to earth a bit as the league adjusted to them. it was also difficult for me to see so many uncertain questions (fields, getz, contreras/colon, centerfield/lead-off) being answered as resoundingly positive as they were last year. so although i don't advocate unloading at this point i have a difficult time envisioning a scenario where this team all of a sudden becomes able to play great defense and execute offensively when the home runs aren't there. without those, even divisional title hopes are a pipe dream, imo.
  2. the indians radio guys were talking a lot about colon during the game this past sunday. they said that in their pre-game talks with white sox officials the team was concerned that colon was throwing almost exclusively fastballs and was not really willing to go to any other pitches. they thought he was trying to change from a power guy into someone who relied almost exclusively on location and movement. that's an awful big transition for a guy to make. it can be done, but it's just difficult.
  3. QUOTE (WSoxMatt @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 03:38 PM) That never works for us!! mark buerhle says hi.

    Sigh

QUOTE (TitoMB345 @ Jun 8, 2009 -> 08:59 PM) I hope there are a lot of boos at the game tonight. The fans need to start showing they won't put up for paying full price to watch some AA team play ML ball. there's been plenty of boos lately. i don't think fans booing is going to have much of an affect on how the team plays.
  5. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 4, 2009 -> 01:30 AM) One way to look at their plans...who goes down when Jose comes up...Gobble or Whisler. it would be difficult to argue that either would contribute more to the big club than contreras would.
  6. as long as he doesn't replace richard i welcome him back with open arms. it would be unconventional but i'd have no issue with he and colon sharing the five spot from here on out.
  7. QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Jun 2, 2009 -> 04:33 PM) I'm one of Floyd's biggest detractors. I'm simply at a loss for words looking at his recent starts. All I can say is I was obviously way off base and way quick to pile on when he started so badly. It's like night and day since the beginning of May. Whatever amends I need to make I'd make them here. Floyd truly is a gamer. He's a major league caliber starter and he's definitely able to be at least a capable pitcher. Whether or not he'll be consistent is another story. Also, kudos to O. Guillen and KW for keeping this team's wits about them. They are a vet club, but 7 games under really early has a way of spiralling out of control. For as badly as this team has played at times, for as bad as some of the starting pitching has been, and considering the injuries, to be .500 at this point is a freaking miracle. if you were truly at a loss for words this would be a much shorter post. just sayin'.
  8. beckham is killing it in charlotte.
  9. don't know why but this made me laugh:
  10. QUOTE (santo=dorf @ May 21, 2009 -> 02:02 AM) Bigger fluke season: 2008 Gavin Floyd or 2007 Fausto Carmona? speaking of carmona his line tonight was ugly: 1.1 IP, 3H, 5R, 5ER, 5W, 3K. he threw 60 pitches and recorded four outs. era at 6.42 now.
  11. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ May 22, 2009 -> 10:25 AM) I'm actually rooting for Peavy to shutdown the Cubs, for the Sox to win convincingly, and for that to leading towards a bridge being rebuilt. I don't think this has been visited for the last time. ^this.
  12. i'd say not that important, although it would be nice.
  13. not to sound bitter but peavy can eat a turd.
  14. the good thing for the sox is that no one is going to run away with the division. there is a whole lot of meh in the central this year, and because of that i expect the sox to be within shooting distance of the division lead all year. i think we can all agree this is a flawed team. we knew that going in. take that same flawed team and add a boatload of injuries to key players and yeah, you're going to see some bad baseball. and we have.
  15. bd's post=awesomeness of the highest order. bravo, my friend.
  16. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Apr 27, 2009 -> 07:32 PM) And the overreactions to media quotes continues!!!! ^word.
  17. QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Mar 31, 2009 -> 08:26 PM) ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ I would say ALL years, except 2006. yeah, 06 is what made me change my initial post from "all" to "most." i felt pretty good that year. either way, there are legitimate flaws in this team. centerfield, lead-off, the back-end of the rotation, and my biggest worry, the defense. that said, if you look around the division you'd be hard-pressed to find a team that doesn't have just as many concerns. so, we'll just have to play those 162 after all.
  18. i'm not worried yet. it seems that most years by the end of st we've convinced ourselves the sox are doomed.
  19. i think this could be one of the worst defensive teams in the league which is all the more reason that anderson should start in center.
  20. QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Mar 21, 2009 -> 09:49 PM) Hawk often talks about how unfamiliar he is with the NL in its present state But what I dont get is why someone who purports to greatly prefer DH-less baseball....doesnt watch DH-less baseball given the fact he's calling white sox games just about every night i doubt he has the time to watch much national league ball.
  21. QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Mar 17, 2009 -> 11:36 PM) Being a Bears fan and STH as well as an Angelo supporter is just so tough sometimes. He goes into FA with needs at WR, FS, OG, OT, DE, and maybe even QB and gets an OG (Omiyale) who has started 1 game...ever, and Josh Bullocks at FS who has been apart of an awful Saints secondary. He better come out of this draft a winner. BTW- the Times reports that the Bears are holding a private workout with Phil Loadholt (RT, Oklahoma) and Hakeem Nicks (WR, North Carolina). NFL.com reports the Bears, Bucs, Chargers, and some other team are the 4 teams that like Herman Johnson (OG, LSU) the most. i'd be a happy man if the bears came out of draft day with hakeem nicks on the roster.
  22. i don't think it's so much people saying chester is a great player as acknowledging how important he is to illinois specifically. he is a huge part of helping illinois play the way it needs to play to win. he's also the only consistent player illinois has. most of the players on illinois's roster are fairly uneven from game-to-game. although there are probably four or five guys on the roster who are more talented and better players than chet, he's the only one you can count on to bring it every night.
