QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Nov 20, 2008 -> 11:46 PM) Big Ten is 27-0. Sorry, we're gonna screw that up for you. IU's playing in Maui next week. -
Upon seeing the amount of The Hold Steady love here, I got some of their stuff. I liked a lot of it. Not the best stuff I've ever heard, but worth listening to more -- we'll see if it grows on me.

Anyone see this? http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/years...118081dal1.html

I remember when I was a kid wanting to go to the 18 and over only section...not because I knew what was in there (or would have understood even if I did know), but because it seemed like one of those "forbidden" places.

QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Nov 18, 2008 -> 09:40 PM) Sure they did, but its pretty easy to ignore a bad indie band. So it sounds like your beef is with the record industry and not the bands themselves.

QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Nov 18, 2008 -> 09:08 PM) The Replacements made indie music possible. Nirvana ripped off the Pixies and gave us a sea of Creeds and Nickelbacks. Definitely a *tad* overgeneralized...."a sea of Creeds and Nickelbacks" is more than a bit harsh. I mean, any popular music will automatically lend itself to good and bad bands alike -- by the same token, didn't the Replacements thus give us "a sea of" bad indie bands?
-
Really depends on how you're ranking them. If it's on a "what they did for music" basis, Nirvana scores pretty high, but if not, I could see how others disagree. I still maintain that the Band is the best group to come out of this continent.

Yeah...as usual, not so sure about this list. As someone (LMB, maybe?) pointed out, there's a big difference between singer and vocalist -- if it's the former, Dylan shouldn't be anywhere near it, but the latter probably top 20. If I had to do a quick top 5 vocalists.... 5. Stevie Winwood/Eddie Vedder/Chris Cornell/someone else 4. Aretha Franklin 3. Freddie Mercury 2. Sam Cooke 1. Brad Delp

QUOTE (SleepyWhiteSox @ Nov 18, 2008 -> 12:01 AM) I went to see DePaul play against albany on campus. DePaul won 75-64. Dar had a 360 dunk. Oh yeah, Gene Honda went out front for a smoke immediately after the game. Can't be good for the vocal chords... And it was nice to see Wayne Blackshear there... Yeah, I was aware he smoked. I always thought it was a little amusing. -

He can't do jail time, this is a civil case I think. Also, I thought I saw somewhere the complaint was already dropped? -
Where do you go to school? Also, I'm mostly with you on lit...most of the stuff bores me, but I can see how some find it useful, especially because I love history and I can see how the two often tie together. I'm also taking a law class this semester, and I love it a lot, because it goes together with history a lot.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Nov 16, 2008 -> 07:57 PM) While I kinda like most of my classes, I HATE the literature class I'm in right now (American Literature from the Civil War to the Present). Literary analysis blows. I just got finished reading a Walt Whitman poem about a male bird who lost his female companion and stayed up every night singing about how he wants her to come back but she is gone, probably dead, then the narrator asks the bird if he'd been singing for him all along instead of the mate. ... wtf, who cares? Apparently someone, if you're reading it 150 years after it was written.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Nov 15, 2008 -> 10:53 PM) The first 11 or so minutes of NWST/IU might have been the single worse display of CBB I have ever seen. No kidding, I was there, it was ugly. Like you said, the first 10 min or so of the first half were the worst; after that, we definitely played better, though still not what I would term "good." We had a lot of trouble on the boards -- I feel there were multiple possessions where NWST got 3-4 offensive rebounds in a row, it was horrible. Free throw shooting was also atrocious...I want to say it was 28/41. Devan Dumes was BY FAR the best player on the court for IU. You could tell he's actually played some college ball before, unlike the others. V-3 (Verdell Jones) started out pretty bad, forced passes and some shoddy ballhandling, but he played really well the second half, and finished with a stat line of something like 18 points, 5 assists, 3 steals, and 3 blocks. Pritchard had a little trouble boxing out, but he finished with a double double. Ballhandling will be crucial for this team, and they were pretty poor at that last night. All in all, I have no idea what to expect this season, but I have a feeling I'll want to take wins where I can get them, but the Hoosiers definitely need to improve. -

QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Nov 12, 2008 -> 11:33 AM) I actually recognize where the picture was taken. Right off the Edens there's a Forest Preserve, its right by a CarMax... the name of it escapes me. The exit you're referring to is Tower, it looks like it's the Skokie Lagoons, somewhere between a little south of Tower to about halfway between Tower and Dundee.

But Robert Morris has DeAndre Thomas! ... ... Yeah, I guess that doesn't mean much. -
QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Nov 2, 2008 -> 08:36 AM) A federally managed election registration is anti-federalist and should not happen. Our government consists of 50 separate states, not 50 provinces of a greater country. Each state deserves the ability to push forward its elections in a manner they see fit, providing it agrees with the US Constitution. Wait, what? Maybe I'm forgetting the U.S. History I learned in high school, but Federalism is a strong centralized government, so if we were giving more power to the federal government, how would that be anti-federalist?

I saw the Hoosiers open scrimmage yesterday, here are a few notes: Tom Pritchard looked really good. He ran the floor extremely well for a big man, always hustling. I particularly remember one instance where he dunked, and then was still the first player back. He also moved well under the basket. Verdell Jones was the best player on the court, hands down. I really think he could be something special. He's a point guard in a 6'5" body, great rotation on his shot, and was a lot better going inside than I expected. Also distributed pretty well. From what I read Dumes will be starting at the point, but I'm hoping for a three guard set with Jones/Dumes/Williams. Nick Williams looked solid (everything I've read indicated he should be the best player on this team this year), about what I expected. Decently sized, moved well, Crean mentioned he might be playing more on the inside than on the outside. Tijan Jobe is big, but that's it. VERY raw, and since he's a JUCO transfer, I'm not sure how much he'll turn into in two years. It's gonna be a long season in the Hall this year, but I feel a lot better now than I did 6 months ago. -
I sometimes really feel for it, but it's rare that I'd actually cry. However, I do remember when I was young walking into the room and there was a movie with an albino kid in it (so I'm assuming it's Powder, but I don't know for sure), and I cried while watching part of that.

The area is a little more liberal than you'd expect. Seals made it close last time, and I wouldn't be surprised at all if he wins.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 17, 2008 -> 03:46 PM) Even before, I didn't see that as a pattern. I think it goes more individual to individual, in each party. And its always frustrating too, often the most reliable and most likely to stick to their stances, are the looniest in each party in terms of where they are on issues. See: Kucinich. Hey now, Kucinich was my favorite of all the primary candidates.
