Pedro Grifol named White Sox manager; Katz asked to return per Rosey
If Kevin Long was given very prominent press for helping turn around Schwarber into one of the best home run hitters in baseball, and then move to the phillies where the slugging of Schwarber helped keep them afloat while Harper was injured, yes, not many would want him. But those things did happen and that's why people like him. also this very famous moment: (Kevin Long and Juan Soto travel to dodgers playoff game last year to cheer on Max Scherzer) It really is okay to like someone. And if the manager doesn't have as much control of success as you like, why do you care if people want someone they like in the role of manager?

2022-23 NFL Season thread
Surprise but after sleeping on it, am starting to get excited. There are elements here where you just have to hope the f.o./coaching staff are right. Their 'type' for a receiver has been described as bigger, athletic profiles. That is where the attraction to Harry, St. Brown come from. Harry looked good last week but Claypool has certainly been better as a pro. They've wanted a fly route guy for a while, and mooney is a bit too small for the press on it. But the other element is the bears F.O. finally reorienting focus to the offense. I don't know if Claypool works out, but I know many of us were looking in horror at this FA class where there was maybe only one guy you could squint and say is a #2 (smith-schuster). The draft really had only one guy you could say is a Poles/Flus type (Quentin Johnston, TCU). Smith-Njigba was a big name, but really doesn't sound like a fit for what they say they like (he may run extremely slow for a wR in combine, is only 6'0). Jordan Addison is a smaller guy, and same with Boutte (but may be extremely athletic, so we'll see). So add both those together, it made sense. I pouted about Calvin Riddle, but he really is a risky play. No guarantee he's re-instated by 2023, hasn't played in 2 years. Is already relatively older. The jags put together a very interesting deal to account for that, but Claypool plays right away. Anyway with Claypool, they have a guy who has big run game moments, and they will give him every opportunity to go deep isntead of his slot role this year. With him and Harry, there is some size now in red zone. Let's hope they play with it.

You keep saying this but the reason he came to prominence is his work with the nationals and especially the turn around with Schwarber. (Nationals won in 2019 btw) Maybe just because you were ignorant doesn’t mean everyone was. I don’t know, maybe after all our star young players turned into offensive pumpkins that could be a popular profile. But DA knows best, if anyone ever likes something, it must be wrong.

Good stuff. The NFL is hard to figure out so it’s hard to be too confident. I knew they wanted a big receiver. They get a no doubt one that’s maybe one of the best athletes in the position. I complain they don’t get a smaller guy suspended for the season. Just desperately need this to work. Can’t handle another decade of same ole bears.

I think it's really hard to know who will be a good hitting coach, there isn't any one profile. That's why you also shouldn't be trigger shy to firing them if they aren't working out. But to me they should be answering to an org level hitting coordinator.

Would much rather have done the Ridley deal.

I don't think this is the most up to date info. Schefter tweeted at 1:04 pm that it was Chicagos own pick, and I have not seen any disagreement since.

Absolutely true. This may continue to be one of the bigger feast and famine record distributions we've seen. But given the rest of the schedule for the bears, the question will become whether the lions can outscore our depleted defense or vice versa. If we are closer to 4 wins, likely top 5. If we are at 5 wins, very likely we are much later in the round than we'd expect in previous years.

This is ridiculous. To the extent people lose their minds about Velus, it's because the bears had to go into another draft with no first round or fourth round pick. They had the fewest players on contract at the end of the season in the league. He's a third round pick, it is true, they do not work out sometimes. How is Jalen Tolbert doing? Is that a more acceptable failure to everyone? David Bell leads 3rd round receivers with 9. Tolbert has 3.

Hey they moved Soler to dh in 2019!

It's definitely more than I'd want to give up for Claypool. Esp with a top 5 potential 2nd rounder, you are talking about a pick that's like 20 back from ones that landed AJ Brown and other legit 1s.

very important to make the inevitable "chase claypool is younger than Velus Jones Jr" comment.

I get it but Diontae/Pickens have found production. I am good with it, he's 24. His 2020 was really good, he's big and got typical speed but super athletic. Exactly what they've outlined. I just thought he was a bit overrated when fans were saying "roquan for claypool who says no?". Apparently it was closer than I realized, with just a 4th separating them.

drafted same year as mooney, UFA in 2024. Second rounder so no 5th year option.

I do continue to like how the things poles/flus says they want are what we continue to see them target.

I'm a bit nervous just because production has been super meh, but I'm also not surprised. I figured Bears were going to go after a big receiver. Had a big need for one and the ones in draft are 6 ft

It's low, but major league teams offer trash salaries in many of their roles because so many people would still take it to work for a MLB team.
