  1. Last night my wife and I went out to dinner with a group of friends. We talked about the Super Bowl, but then the conversation turned to everyone saying what their favorite sport was. I of course said baseball, and the woman next to me said she enjoyed it but found it a little boring. I told her that once you understand the nuances of the game it is very dramatic and exciting. I used game six of this past World Series as an example. Long story short, she is a very literary person and asked me to reccomond at least three books about baseball. I've thought of Moneyball and Roger Kahn's The Boys of Summer. I know I can count on all of you to help me come up with a third, and probably a better one and two as well. Help me out Soxtalkers. I want to convert her from basketball to baseball!
  2. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jan 3, 2012 -> 02:08 PM) Nobody is saying to trade or release them (minus elrock). Just saying that we should play them less until they earn the spot back. Agreed. I think the best thing Ventura can do is open camp with a speech explaining that all starting positions are open. Everyone has to earn the right to play. Obviously this is not true in the case of 1b and ss, but there is no reason to award any other starting position if the player does not compete in spring training and earn his job. The whole "let's go to camp and get our work in" under Ozzie led to a lazy team and bad starts.
  3. How about offering Santos or Danks. Tell the team they can take their pick, but they have to take Rios. Sign Quinten, sign Buehrle, everybody's happy.
  4. What I find fascinating is how the agents seem to have been in the dark, and not a part of this negotiation. My understanding is Scott Boras has been on radio, ripping the new CBA. It sounds like he did not know what was coming, or if he did he did he could not influence it. I am pro union, but if Boras is losing some of his influence in baseball, then this is a good thing.
  5. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 16, 2011 -> 12:04 PM) NUKE CLEVELAND Whatever happened to him?
  6. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 15, 2011 -> 08:18 PM) In advance of tomorrow's game, I'd like to say f*** Fox. Rather than give them ratings on Phils Mets, I'll be seeing a movie. Go see Horrible Bosses
  7. QUOTE (StatManDu @ Jun 4, 2011 -> 10:26 AM) 1972 was an underrated year in Sox annals ... It was one of those campaigns that "saved" the team. I shudder to think what would have happened to the Sox if there weren't renaissance years in 1951, 1972, 1977 and 1990. I have some good stuff from Roland Hemond on 1972 that I'll post one of these days. Hemond, too, is one of those seminal figures in team history. More than anyone, save for Veeck (and that's debatable), he SAVED the team. He built the 1972 and 1983 teams AND acquired both Ozzie Guillen and Ken Williams. If you think about it, Hemond should be in the Hall of Fame He also hired Chuck Tanner!
  8. Wow I was at that doubleheader. Back in the day, bat day always drew a huge crowd. The home run by Allen that day was the must exciting I'd ever seen until Konerko hit his grand slam in game two of the '05 series.
  9. http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-0602-c...,0,282784.story Interesting article. Maybe this is why Gordon isn't hitting with the power we thought he would.
  10. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 25, 2011 -> 11:18 AM) The interesting part could be who closes tonight if it comes up. Multiple innings out of Santos, could challenge the idea of bringing him back again tonight. Not really multiple innings, just a four out save. Mariano does it all the time.
  11. The LA TV announcers said Carlos is out with a sore knee. Anyone have more info on this?
  12. My God you people need to relax. It's April 15th. Calm down
  13. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Apr 1, 2011 -> 08:57 PM) Will Ohman: Be afraid. Be VERY afraid. Will Ohman is well positioned to win the Soxtalk Linebrink award.
  14. Anyone else not getting video on MLB.com?
  15. http://www.chicagobreakingsports.com/2011/...dies-at-81.html He was such a breath of fresh air in the early 70's after two terrible seasons in 68 and 69.
  16. This thread is starting to remind me of the Johnny Damon one from last year.
  17. QUOTE (jphat007 @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 02:47 PM) But who knows if any of those guys might come to play for us. I'd rather have PK than Viciedo at first in 2011. I'd rather take a chance on Viciedo, and sign two solid bullpen guys. Grant Balfour anyone?
  18. QUOTE (MattZakrowski @ Aug 18, 2010 -> 06:19 PM) If he hadn't given away so many outs, we would have scored more runs, giving the bullpen a larger cushion. And you know this as fact?
  19. I agree with Ozzie, and would suggest the movie "Sugar" to anyone who wants to get an idea of what it's like for these young Latinos to come to the U.S. to play baseball. The movie is fiction, not a documentary, but is truly reality based and made by people who did a lot of research, and know the world they depicted.
  20. I just went back and re-read Jordan4life's thread starter and all I can think to say is; I had no idea the spirit of George Steinbrenner would return to earth in another human body so quickly.
