  1. id pull the trigger on gio and contreras still if we could land him easily....especially we dont have to pay any of joses deal....obviously though the orioles didn't want that last year, and they wont this year, but i think id still do garland and gio for tejada...that article makes it sound like tejadas 06 was worse than his 05 year, when in fact it was maybe his best career year....and while is slugging has dropped...his obp increased from 05 to 06, and while it decreased last year it was still higher than it was in 05
  2. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Nov 7, 2007 -> 10:09 AM) You knew this was coming. id part with one of the three (kennedy probably with a gun to my head)....good god though those guys could all be studs in 2 years...i wont go as far to say another maddux glavine smoltz, because there may never be a trio like that....but it would be right up there with the top young combos weve seen since...ie hudson mulder zito........btw people who are so in love with our systems prospects....just take a look at the stats of the young trio the yankees have
  3. i could see something along the lines of the konerko garland deal to anaheim for figgins kotchmann santana....which i know was BS, but just gonna run with the idea....then ship kotchman danks and one of gio/DLS for cabrera....that would allow us to keep fields, would free up the money to sign cabrera long term....provide florida with a ready to play 1b, a ready to pitch SP and a good SP prospect in a year or two or three (three if its DLS probably)..but like said previously, probably not going to happen our lineup would be something like this... figgins CF fields LF thome DG cabrera 1b dye RF AJ C Crede 3b Richar 2b SS?? not sure if that swap would work but basically to simplify, you could break it down into two deals...garland for figgins and shields, and konerko + gio + danks for cabrera.....maybe thats too much to give up, and it would leave us with santana and floyd in the rotation which im not exactly dying to have...but to be frank this is the type of package that would be needed to land cabrera i think....but again....id say its extremely unlikely

  6. QUOTE(scenario @ Nov 6, 2007 -> 10:20 AM) Khalil Greene is an entirely different player away from Petco. Greene G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB K SB CS AVG OBP SLG OPS Home 76 291 36 63 15 3 12 40 15 77 1 0 .216 .258 .412 .670 Away 77 320 53 92 29 0 15 57 17 51 3 0 .288 .322 .519 .840 Not often you see someone whose splits are that wide and favor his road stats rather than home. Clearly a case of a guy who would benefit from a trade. What intrigues me about him isn't the home runs... it's the doubles. 29 doubles in 320 at-bats on the road??? Our team leader last year had 34 doubles total - home and road. since petco is such a difficult HR park, it usually means lots of doubles...im surprised his away doubles are higher than home...but then again the NL west has a few parks that are similar...lots of big gaps in the NL west
  7. QUOTE(fathom @ Nov 6, 2007 -> 09:50 AM) Khalil Greene would put up monster numbers in the Cell. I think Jack Wilson is an upgrade over Uribe, especially if Ozzie wants a team that he can put hit-and-runs on, etc. yeah khal greene doesnt put up the high obp youd really like to see, but its better than uribes and he provides just as good of defense if not better, is a marketable player and hit 27 Hr in PETCO last year and hes still cheap....i really cant imagine that the padres would trade him...its not like matt bush is pushign his heals
  8. peterson is a great back...and in addition he has the best run blocking offensive line in football which is a deadly combination.....not to take away credit from peterson, the guy still was patient enough to find the holes, hit them, and break away from a bunch of tackels to hit paydirt...but i give that O line a ton of credit...they manhandled the bears D line (especially tommie) and just destroyed the chargers 3-4 D....peterson was beyond first down yardage by the time he even got touched alot of the time.....and they were basically facing 8 and even 9 man fronts the whole game....everyone knows who is getting the ball....which is what opened up the deep bomb to a speedster like sydney rice
  9. i dont think theres any personal hate for owens, just the fact that people are rather sick of light hitting, light throwing, borderline CF/LF, type player who has only 1 above average major league tool (speed), which offensively is far less important than on base ability and the ability to hit for extra bases (he slugged .312!).... http://www.baseballprospectus.com/statisti...005.premium.php that link is one of the most basic charts you can get in terms of baseball statistics, but also should be one of the most useful to a manager.....you can do the math and multiply out owens' SBs success....the difference between a runner on 2nd and a runner on 1st is about .15 runs no matter how many outs there are...multiple that by owens 32 SBs and thats 4.8 runs created on his SBs alone on average....which is nice, except of course his CS cost us runs...which according to the chart can cost us anywhere between .23 and .62 runs depending on the # of outs....well go with the middle value and assume that all owens CS occured with 1 out...each of which costs .44 runs * 8 CS =5 3.52 runs his CS cost us so his speed basically created and extra 1.3 runs last year...sweet so basically we should sacrifice a guy who has power and a can create all of those 1.3 runs basically in one swing for a guy like owens who will steal a lot of bases? i can't even believe people around here are making the arguement that we shouldnt get pat burrell because hes "too much of what we already have.".... and people act like owens would help us because he diversifies our lineup (and no not in a racial way).... the chart is certainly not perfect and it does have a few flaws, and im not saying its never a good idea to steal, but honestly, the ability to swipe a base should be looked at as a bonus in a player, and shouldn't be the lone factor in determining how valuable a player is....

QUOTE(Soxfest @ Nov 4, 2007 -> 11:44 AM) This thing is gaining traction. Buster Olney comments on the idea of a Joe Crede for Johnny Damon swap this morning: Makes sense in a lot of ways: The Yankees would get the veteran third baseman they need without committing themselves to big dollars, shed Damon's salary, and the White Sox would solve their third base logjam while adding a center fielder for much less than what the free agent center fielders will get (Damon is owed about $26 million over the next two seasons, and presumably, the Yankees would eat some of that to make a deal happen). if the yankees would pick up a portion of damons contract i wouldnt at all be surpised to see us go after damon for left and still pursue on the of the FA CFs...that shores up a whole lot in terms of LF, CF, leadoff, 6ish hole hitter....a team like this wouldnt be half bad damon fields thome konerko dye hunter AJ SS ? Richar im just not sure wed have the flexability financially to do it...it would depend alot on how much $$ we could get from the yankees...but if we can get lets say 5 mil per year....subtract the 5 from uribe (wed have to find someone young and cheap to play SS) then i could see it happening....or a garland for bill hall swap could seem very reasonable...sox would save not only on uribes contract but garlands while filling SS
  11. with a home town team it has most to do with popularity...ie joe crede, has a few big moments with the sox fans love him....he becomes overrated (at least offensively) in the eyes of the fans......also one inflated stat category when the rest of the resume is average or sub par....ie high win totals, high RBI totals....also included in that category would be the "juan uribe has hit the second most HR among AL SS over the last 3 seasons" or something, that fails to include the fact that hes also had probably one of the lowest obps among ALL players.....but yeah perception of the fans is basically what it has to do with.....also the announcers have a TON to do with that......not saying that it happens with everyone or to the more knowledgable fans...but Hawks and DJs opinion of a guy will go a long way to mold the overall fan base's perception of players....its tough to be objective about guys when they are in love/hate them
  12. QUOTE(AssHatSoxFan @ Nov 2, 2007 -> 07:15 AM) THEY ALL HAVE SWIRLING CHOCOALTE IN THE COMMERCIALS just saw this now...cant believe nobody has finished it.....so i will "not skittles"
  13. QUOTE(rockren @ Nov 3, 2007 -> 03:46 PM) Right our ability to manufacture runs that year had nothing to do with us breaking out. Of course our SP/Bullpen were the reasons we won it all, but we were able to manufacture runs in '05 unlike any other year before. We were able to put up massive numbers on offense every season before it. However, we would score 10 runs one day and then 1 the next. Ozzie's philosophy helped us become World Champions without question. the manufacturing helped a little but ....certainly not as much as the 200+ HR our club hit
  14. do you guys know that furcal is only 2 years younger than hunter? and ALREADY makes 13 mil (which is actually 17 mil with his goofy 4 mil dollar payment made in january 2009) not to mention he is a FA at the end of the year. we are just speculating that hunter will make 14 mil....oh yeah btw furcal hit all of 33 extra base hits last year.....hunter had 12 more doubles alone (45 with an extra 28 HR) and hunter had only 19 more ABs.....SBs? Furcal had all of 7 more than hunter....i said this before....torii is not overrated...he is underrated....with the exception of his injury shortened 2005 he has basically been a 27 HR, 30 2b, 15 SB type player since 2001 while playing above average, if not spectacular defense at a premier defensive position (i will say though that furcal is good defensively as well at a premier position) so we would have to give up players to the dodgers, in order to pay furcal more money for only 1 year to produce less? sorry guys but i have to agree with kalapse on this one... if we have the option of filling CF with hunter and SS with someone else, or SS with furcal and CF with someone else...gimme hunter
  15. http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sp...tesox-headlines this could mean so long crede...and hello damon perhaps? that would certainly shift fields from left back to 3b.
  16. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3090631 Barry says he won't be a part of the HOF if the asterisked ball goes in. I say put the ball in, keep Barry out.
  17. QUOTE(The Critic @ Nov 1, 2007 -> 11:04 AM) My favorite Halloween candy last night was the final one I handed out, more than 90 minutes after the alleged town-mandated end of trick-or-treating. How does a crabass curmudgeon like me ALWAYS end up on Bucket Patrol at Halloween? The wife takes the kid out trick-or-treating and I sit like a dope next to the front door waiting for the parade of kids. I do enjoy two things about the trick-or-treaters: I love the little kids (2 years old and under) who barely even know they're wearing costumes. They're always the cutest kids on the face of the planet. and I love the total indifference of the early teenaged kids who still want the candy but put absolute zero effort into the endeavor. That kind of slacker mentality cracks me up every year. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-4...h&plindex=0 first time i saw this i died when larry says "well there was the trick threat" "trick or treat bang bang!"
  18. QUOTE(Felix @ Nov 1, 2007 -> 10:28 AM) Torii is going to be overpaid and is incredibly overrated. I really hope we aren't the team that signs him. im of the opinion that hunter is one of the more underrate players in the game....with the exception of the injury shortened year in 2005, he has been a fairly consistent 25-30 HR guy for 6 years with a slugging in the high .400s (30ish doubles a year) and 15-20 SBs while playing a good CF (even if his defense is overrated hes still certainly a well above average CF)....hes not gonna have an obp much higher than .330 but he does everything else pretty damn well contrast that to rowand who has hit 13 or fewer HR two of the last 3 seasons and hasnt shown he can be a consistent player.....basically rowands good years have been about the same as hunters average years (with a slightly higher BA)... looking at andruw....jones has had similar to slightly higher obps, stolen less bases, recently has played similar defense to hunter...basically the only thing he has on hunter is the HR, which in the last 3 years have gone 51, 41, 26...not a good trend
  19. QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Oct 31, 2007 -> 04:43 PM) this is getting freaking out of hand. kobe is now rejecting deals to the bulls that pax and buss have agreed on. insanity. although his rejecting them is helping us out because he wants the bulls to dominate. kobe rejected it?
  20. rick bucher on am1000 just said that the deal with the kings isnt very close.....but he said a deal with ben gordon and ben wallace is being discussed and its believe to involve a different 3rd team that isnt the kings he also added that the odds bryant will be traded this season are 100%
  21. QUOTE(knightni @ Oct 31, 2007 -> 04:10 PM) http://games.espn.go.com/nba/features/trad...mp;te=&cash that seems steep...hinrich gordon thomas and noah? i would think only one of the two power FWs would be included and maybe a guy like griffin to offset salary....at the same time, it is kobe with deng staying so i could see it
  22. QUOTE(fathom @ Oct 31, 2007 -> 04:07 PM) Paxson is claiming he won't give up Hinrich. where/when did he claim that?
  23. just listening to bernstein now, he said he got a call from someone reliable, and that its in kobes hands...but he said take this with a grain of salt and that this type of thing changes often.....i didnt hear the initial report, but from the sounds of it, it didnt really sound like he thought this was 90% to go through
  24. QUOTE(GreatScott82 @ Oct 29, 2007 -> 09:46 PM) Now i highly doubt we get A-Rod, but if we do than our payroll would likely be in the $130's-140's for the next 4-5 seasons... does JR take that risk? I would much rather spend $20 mill/ season on Johan Santana than spend 30 mill/season on A-Rod. Pitching wins titles.. look what Boston did with spending big money on Dice-K and Beckett. IF we are to spend big money THIS offseason, i would want it on a CF, (Hunter or Rowand). Next offseason lets make that HUGE push for Santana!! i honestly believe that in 4-5 years, alot of teams in baseball will be in the 130-140 range in payroll...including the white sox...regardless of where arod ends up
  25. QUOTE(forrestg @ Oct 29, 2007 -> 09:30 PM) unless we get rid of all of our big contract players, Konerko, contreras, Garland, dye and THome, I don't see how we can afford arod.. The north side team ,Cubs, has a lot more money than us could easily add Arod regardless of change of ownership. Just think ARod has put up astounding home run, rbi and average statistics against the better american league pitching.. What would Arod do if he was in the NL central small park 70 + homers.. I hate the cubs but they would have some hitters Lee, Ramirez and Arod in a light division. There would be a lot of pressure from the cub fans and perhaps would take less to play for the Whitesox which has a more player friendly environment but I doubt it. thome and garland are off the books next year...if not sooner for garland...thats already 17 mil cleared....uribe will be gone by then...5 more cleared....so while we may not have much flexability this year, we might next year, and i could see us paying more than we should for one year to get a player like arod with what KW has tried to do, its not improbable that garland and contreras's spot in the rotation is filled with a youngster who costs nothing.....floyd, broadway, gio, masset, danks, egbert, someone combination of that + buerhle + vazquez and maybe contreras by 2009..... KWs plan the past year has been about trying to find the hottest commodity in baseball (cheap, young arms) and i honestly think KW is looking to get cheaper in the rotation, opening up quite a bit of salary.....money which can be used for some Free agent position players...cuz honestly...there is no impact bat on the horizon in our minors to help fill thomes void when he leaves.... in thinking about it...if i am the dodgers i seriously consider offering the twins laroche, kershaw and another prospect for santana, and then make a run at arod to play 3rd....beyond that everyone keeps saying the angels...and while i do think they need another hitter...they have never been a team to pay huge money (yeah they signed vlad and colon, but those are 14 and 12 mil dollar deals) plus that team is always so high on their youngsters and brandon wood will probably end up at 3b.....i dont think the cubs really make sense unless they think arod can still play SS.....there could always be a sleeper team out there, the giants seem to make sense with bonds coming off their books....i also think boston is not unlikely either...lowell is a FA, and mannys contract expires soon leaving money and production to fill....i really think the white sox seem like a likely fit to be one of the main players for him
