Dave was right - there were 8 spaces in the MITB graphic on RAW last night. Jeff went over, after Shelton took a hideous spill after slipping off the top rope. So right now it's Edge/Jeff/Punk/Booker and 4 more spots. Johnny Nitro cut a great promo on Melina, talking about how pissed he was that he lost to Punk, leading me to think there might be some angle to get him in there somewhere - either taking out Punk, or winning another match to get in. What would be a great way to go would be to put Matt Hardy and both Nitro & Mercury into the match. That way you could further the MNM/Hardys feud WITHIN the MITB match. If that happens, my pick for the last spot would be Randy Orton, to play up this feud with Edge. If that happens, it might be three tag teams with the partners fighting against each other in MITB. Interesting....

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 26, 2007 -> 04:53 AM) Consistent doesn't necessarily mean all-or-none about names. For example, I think names like "Illini" or "Utes" are perfectly fine, but I find Chief Illiniwek to be unacceptable (so I think the right decision was made here). Why? Because the name is not an insult, but the chief and its behavior are. So, I'm consistent in my view. Just don't be offensive. If U of I really wanted to keep the chief, all they had to do was work with the tribe(s) and come up with a way for it not to be insulting. If they couldn't make that work, then just don't do it. Agree with this, with the following example. The Chicago Blackhawks is not an offensive nickname, but if they had an Indian chucking a tomahawk on ice skates would be. Just like the Tomohawk Chop is racist & degrading. -
Jeff Hardy/Shelton Benjamin tonight for a MITB spot. Hoping Shelton goes over.....

QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Feb 25, 2007 -> 04:58 PM) We need to get someone in here to pin this thread. It's the third most popular one on the page. So Trump is supposed to name Lashley as his guy tomorrow night. I heard he was on the radio over the past week (predictably) botching Bobby's last name. Why have a match with two champions where one monster is going to come out looking bad? Trump called him "Lindsey." I don't have a problem with this match-up - yes, someone is going to lose. Umaga lost at the Royal Rumble and I don't think it hurt him one bit. And it adds credibility to Lashley - he's the one that needs it badly. His weak squashes on ECW are not helping IMO. And it makes the match look pretty even on paper. As for TNA, I don't even remember what the main event was last week. Adding the Sopranos star may seem lame, but TNA is constantly trying to get mainstream publicity, and think this will help. The worst travesty is this feud is turning the Dudleys into Italian goombas. What WWE has gotten right lately (in their main event picture), and what Russo & the TNA bookers are missing is the point of title feuds should be about GETTING THE TITLE. Revenge is a good motivation, but honestly, do we need to see an attack on a family member who isn't a series regular? It doesn't mean anything, because we as an audience have no investment in that person, so we don't care if they get revenge or not. That said, the Cage/Angle match from the last PPV was pretty good. The main event of Destination X could be good, or very bad. This is the first time Samoa Joe has had a one-on-one match for the World Title. I doubt the belt will move, so how do you have Cage go over without hurting Joe in the process and repeating the same ending from the Angle match. ROH in Chicago over the weekend got really good reviews on some of the sites I've seen. Joe & Homicide lost in the main event to Morishima & McGuinness. The Briscoes (who rule when motivated) won the tag belts over Chris Daniels & Matt Sydal. Love to see htem with a long title reign. Did anyone go? RAW tonight. Lashley unveiling. Will there be a MNM/Hardys match at WM? Who will be added to the Money in the Bank match? Shelton Benjamin? Randy Orton?

QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Feb 22, 2007 -> 04:29 PM) I was there when it started and there was a Native American woman championing the cause, I think her name was Tilton, but she was helped by a white male. The same one who went after Niles West in the late 80s. Just FYI. As seen in the film "In Whose Honor?" I'm familiar with the Univ. of North Dakota controversy as well. Their mascot is the Fighting Sioux, which although (to my knowledge) didn't have a chief Illiniwek-type character at halftimes, the name Sioux is offensive to the Lakota nation (the real name of the tribe - not Sioux as it was given to them by an enemy tribe.) The UND controversy is complicated by the fact that the school has a new basketball/hockey arena, which has the Sioux logo impressed onto every seat, and a clause in the building's lease which states that if the name Sioux ever changes, UND will not be allowed to have games there. As you can guess, the major donor behind the arena's construction was a big Sioux (the name)-defender. But they'll lose their court case, so it'll be interesting to see what happens next. -

QUOTE(Pauly8509CWS @ Feb 22, 2007 -> 11:28 AM) For the rest of you guys that go here, watch it again, I've been here for less than a year, but I got chills every halftime. Because that means, when the Chief is out there, the people you sing the Alma Mater with are basically like your family. You are one with them, You are the Illini Nation. I got a bit choked up yesterday, being on the floor for the last Chief performance, and you know what, I get choked up watching it. I grew up watching Illinois sports, and I came here excited to know that we had one of the most storied half times of all time, and now it's being taken away from us. Oh well, all I can say to the people who claim to be offended by Chief, get off your soap box. To those that are here and understand, don't let anyone forget that we at the University of Illinois, were robbed of one of the coolest things in collegiate athletics. HILARIOUS!!! Needed a laugh at work. -
QUOTE(CubKilla @ Feb 22, 2007 -> 09:24 AM) The "Jackie Puppet" segment was funny and was Billy West's best contribution to Stern's Show. Having said that, I got Sirius for Stern. While I didn't begrudge him a vacation for the obvious times of year (2 weeks for Summer, 1 week for Thanksgiving, 2 weeks for Xmas/New Years) when he started up at Sirius, it now seems like he's taking a god damn vacation every 3rd week. Not to mention, he's only doing 4 live shows a week when he's not on a god damn vacation. I find myself listening to the music stations and various other stations 3 times a week now cause I'm not a big fan of "Master Tape Theatre" on Friday's and that is NOT what I got Sirius for. If I wanted to listen to music, I'd have used the $$$ for an I-Pod. Stern has an obligation to his listener's that forked over $$$ for ORIGINAL shows and, IMHO, he's borderline not delivering. Just my 2 cents. This is the first week he's been on vacation since he's been back and it was a week that would have had only 3 broadcasts anyway, with the holiday. And I'm sorry if you don't like "Master Tape Theatre", but for a longtime fan, I think it rules. I'd prefer though to get different MTT broadcasts thru the day on 100 rather than the same one repeated. And the Billy West stuff was great! Also, you got live Bubba & Ferrall shows all week, so what's the problem?

Isn't it possible his agent is just posturing to drive his price up ala a training camp holdout?

What did Blacks say while the majority of vaudeville performers (Al Jolson, anyone?) performed in blackface, or shows like Amos n Andy with racist stereotypes were on radio and laer television? Nothing. In some cases, I'll bet they even defended it. The racism is institutionalized so it isn't as noticeable to either the majority or the minority. Have you ever heard the phrase "That's mighty white of you." Same thing - not meant as racist when used today, but its racist in origin and therefore wrong. Same thing as calling someone "a girl", a "pussy", or intimating that something dumb "is gay." That's sexist and heterosexist, and not right. You're either on the right side of history or the wrong side, and the Chief is clearly on the wrong side. Good riddance. -
QUOTE(LowerCaseRepublican @ Feb 21, 2007 -> 12:28 PM) Punk is using the Go2Sleep now? Somewhere KENTA cries. For some reason, it didn't look like the Go2Sleep and I've seen KENTA & B-Boy do it. Not sure why though.

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Feb 21, 2007 -> 07:09 AM) 3.) Align the MLS rules with the FIFA rules 100%. Have a single table, and at the end the top so many teams get to play in the playoffs. Yes, but a lot of the FIFA rules suck. A single table - why? Also, the clock. It counts up, instead of down, which is more dramatic. No clock stoppage - so therefore there is no clock drama a la basketball, football, & hockey. and arbitrary stoppage time - dumb. National teams getting to pull their players from club games. Selling players instead of trades.... in fact, their whole economic structure, which destroys competitive balance. Talk about need for a salary cap. FIFA needs to watch more American sports and get their heads out of their asses.

QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Feb 21, 2007 -> 10:18 AM) Pardon me if I'm saddened by this. The Chief stirred my emotions from the first time I saw him in person in 1984. I never thought it was anything but respectful. Of course, I am a white jewish kid from Skokie. To me, there's a very fine line. Chief Wahoo, Redskins, Indians...bad. Why, because those ARE caricatures. If there wasn't ever a Chief, the Illini name would be able to stand, as the NCAA has allowed. BUT, there is nothing but reverence for the Chief. No baby kissing. No mugging for the camera. No speaking when dressed as the Chief. I guess my point is...if an institution is doing it's best to try to make it as reverential as possible, why couldn't the remaining tribes try to find a middle ground. Maybe, in exchange for allowing it to continue...the Chief loses the headdress, has to spend up to a year on the reservation with the tribe, learning customs, authentic dances, etc. In return, the University supplies a certain amount of scholarships, maybe does some research on issues that impact Native Americans, possibly even opening some sort of research facility on the res to supply jobs? It's still a caricature. A white student (even an actor) cannot portray a Indian effectively enough for it not to be. It works the same way in films and tv - whites do not portray characters of other races because they cannot do it without trivializing and ridiculing them. -
QUOTE(LowerCaseRepublican @ Feb 20, 2007 -> 04:04 PM) Hey now, I mentioned it. /smarky.mcsmarkington s***, you're right - missed it. I think no one predicted Homicide to have a long title reign, so it's fine. Morishima gives the ROH belt some credibility in Japan, where aupposedly it will be defended soon. ROH is building up Japan as a major market for them. Smart. Edge v Punk v ??? so far in MITB. Punk used a new finisher on ECW last night - a fireman's throw into a knee to the face. Guess the agents talked him out of the Anaconda Vice. Also, Booker & Kane had a Falls Count Anywhere MITB qualifier on SD. I won't spoil it unless people want it.

talk Punk goes over tonite and possibly gets moved to Raw to feud w/ Nitro. We'll see........ btw, no mention of the ROH Title Change this weekend. Homicide lost the belt to Takeshi Morishima of Pro Wrestling NOAH (Japan).

People have said everything I would have posted about how awful the Chief is and how the nickname "Blackhawks" isn't. But, this bears mentioning: The word "alumni" is a plural word. You are not an alumni. You are an alum. -
QUOTE(T R U @ Feb 19, 2007 -> 10:57 PM) My prediction is Trump chooses Mic Foley Yeah, that's what I've heard, in his Cactus Jack persona. that will allow Mick to play off the "firing" he received in 2006. Latest lineup for Mania: HBK/Cena (WWE Title) Taker/Batista (WH Title) McMahon (Umaga) v Trump (Foley?) (IC Title on the line?) MITB Ladder Match: Edge v ??? rumors: Melina/Ashley (Women's Title) MNM/Hardys feud blowoff not bad so far.

Ersty's my gf's favorite player. Of course, they're both from North Dakota..... Now that I think about it, there was a radio station in ND that broadcasted every Angels game because Darin was on the team. I wonder if they'll switch to the Sox now. Hmmm......

saw Letters from Iwo Jima over the weekend. Wow, just a terrific film. Loads better than Flags of our Fathers. Basically a small group of Japanese soldiers are given this suicide mission to defend this tiny island against a zillion Americans, and told that they'll receive no air support, navy support, or reinforcements. Watanabe and the other lead (an unknown) are amazing. It's a little depressing as you realize almost every single character you've met will die, but as the story unfolds, I found myself getting so tense as to when and how. And for the first time, I rooted against the Americans. Definitely Best Picture material.

QUOTE(mreye @ Feb 13, 2007 -> 09:52 AM) ...to go to a wake? Our Parish Priest passed away Friday after a short battle with cancer. The wake is tonight. My 4 1/2 year old daughter was semi close to him - she'd talk to him and give him a hug every Sunday after mass. She says she understands what has happened and that he has gone up to heaven. She even had a girl in her school's Dad die from a heart attack and asked me if she could pray for him. (I held it together until I put her to bed and then cried my eyes out) So, would it be crazy to take her there? Yes, it's open casket. It's at the church, so it's not like we'd be staring at the body the entire time. Obviously you know her better than we do, but from your description, she sunds like she can handle it and act appropriately. I was about 4-5 when I saw my first one (no, check that - I was less than 1 but I don't remember it.) I think it's a good opportunity to talk about death and for her to say goodbye to your priest.

QUOTE(LowerCaseRepublican @ Feb 12, 2007 -> 04:04 AM) ROH is so good...which is the complete opposite of that TNA PPV last night. Ugh. Just reading the results and it sounded like crap. And Test has been taken off the road for wellness issues. I watched it - it WAS horrible. Even the matches that sounded good on paper (Lynn/Sabin, Senshi/Starr) were bad. I counted 6 run-ins thru the night (I predicted 10), we got this awful Bobby Roode/Eric Young/Traci Brooks storyline, introduced in a bathroom by Kevin Nash & Alex Shelley. Bob Backland was completely non-sensical and dumb. The Rhino/Styles chain match (like a dog collar match) ended with both guys out of the handcuffs. Don't get me started on the Prison Yard Match. and the Little Italy Street Fight had Italian restaurant tables in the ring and dancing girls in cages. Just awful. Yes, Big fat oily guy - who's dumb now, TNA? At least, Big Dick Johnson isn't on tv anymore. Too many stipulation matches, and what stips they had didn't make sense for the storylines they were pushing. A zillion run-ins but the Angle/Cage match was very good. Angle looks to be back in form. Christian retains. All is good. btw, I didn't pay for it. Thank God.
