Strasburg officially opts out
What the Sox will probably do should not inform the discussion on what the Sox should do....both in terms of draft picks and financial offers. The Sox should offer whatever it takes to get both pitchers, and win a goddamned World Series. The White Sox make a mint every year on merchandising and television rights ,and are consistently rated an extremely profitable and valuable franchise. Whether they would spend $300 or $400 million on these two pitchers is absolutely arbitrary to their long term bottom line, even if the last three years of both are not great. Fine, we might suck in 2025. Who cares. Our window is 2020-2023. Get them done.

Machado do-over
If Machado had a 109 OPS+ / 3.1 WAR year after signing a 300 million contract with the Sox, people would be calling for his head.

The Official Too Soon Mock Off Season Thread
Yolmer has got to be gone. I want Mendick instead. Leury makes a ton of sense as a super Util as we have one more year of control.

Moncada
With Anderson, the thing that concerns me more than his defense is his low walk total. I think part of it is his style, as he is a very aggressive hitter and is not often ahead in counts. However, I'm apprehensive that whenever he has a slump his OBP is going to plummet to an abysmal level. Can you imagine a half-year where he's hitting .230 with a .250 OBP? That wouldn't be good. I love Tim though, and I'm really glad he's part of our team for the next several years. He's one of my favorite players.

Can reylo make a similar jump as giolito did this year in 2020?
What are his xFIP splits first half / second half? Edit: I looked it up. 5.74 first half/4.95 Second Half. Second half doesn't seem TOO horrible...

Lopez' second half numbers (5-7, 4.62 ERA, 1.37 WHIP) would be just fine for a number 5 starter, especially within the context of the Sox having a great veteran FA pitching pickup and Cease, Kopech and Giolito rounding out the other slots.

Q: What is the magic number of number of Castillo at bats remaining in his white Sox career? A: one too many

Yolmer contemplates not being on the Sox
I don't think so. When he hit 3 homers last August, his BABIP was .375. This is different.
-
Yolmer contemplates not being on the Sox
I don't know. Since coming back, in 54 second half games, he's hitting .243/.310/.396/.706, with 5 homers, 5 doubles and a triple. HIs BABIP is two points higher than his career average. He could end up being a pretty valuable defensive replacement if his bat has seriously improved this much.

Yolmer contemplates not being on the Sox
Yolmer should absolutely not be brought back. Leury is in his final year of control and could start the year at 2nd while we are waiting for Madrigal and be a super-util elsewhere. I'm assuming Engel witll be the fourth OF.

Machado do-over
Well, we were told the money will be spent, so we'll see. I'm surprised more people don't think Machado is having a really disappointing year. If Machado put up a 107+ OPS for the Sox this board would have been all over that signing as being bad
-
Machado do-over
Except that this is about the next ten years, and it seems with the addition of Robert alongside Moncada, Abreu (assuming he comes back), Jimenez, Anderson, and eventually, Andrew Vaughn will have enough power without $30 million dollars of contract eaten by a player who does not seem worth that deal per annum.
-
Machado do-over
if he's doing a lot worse there than he should, it would seem as though he is underperforming his contract
-
Machado do-over
but what about his OPS+, which is only 107, and accounts for park factor?
-
Machado do-over
Yes, but Machado really hasn't been that valuable offensively - his value has largely been generated this season, defensively. His offense this year hasn't really been that great. I'm glad we missed out of Machado, in hindsight. I know we missed for the wrong reasons but I'm glad we did.
