I’m sure all popes get asked similar things from their countrymen. I believe he went to Mendel, so not sure if the Leo thing has anything to do with the high school. It’s a very traditional papal name. But I wouldn’t doubt that the connection occurred to him, and maybe it made it that much easier of a choice?
