Your on a roll with this subject. s*** happens. Those players earned those contracts, GMs can't forsee the future. Matt Kemp, Pujols, and A Rod were always MVP candidates year in and year out. A GM is not gonna say "wellll idk, I think they might bust even though they've consistently been phenomenal talents" Same goes with your true target in this silly little tangent, Adam Dunn. He was one of the most consistent power hitters over the last some odd years. A GM has no way of knowing he's all of sudden going to become less of a singles/doubles hitter. All these players have built up a solid enough reputation to garner these contracts.

Let's talk about Adam Dunn destinations

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 17, 2013 -> 02:46 PM) That was getting Reynolds without getting anything back. I don't see where it does the Sox any good to pay Dunn $6-8 million or more to play for another team next year. Money shouldn't be an object with many large contracts off the books, and it's not like they have a couple of guys raring to go in the minors. They are better off keeping him. If they don't plan on competing next season and can get a player who can contribute for the future if they chip in money then it makes a ton of sense. His value might actually be somewhat decent right now since he's been pretty hot for a good period of time. Once again I personally think they should be competing next year, but for the sake of the thread I'm entertaining the idea of trading him. -

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jul 17, 2013 -> 02:21 PM) Agreed. Adam Dunn probably only has value to someone if the Sox pick up substantial money. A team with a really bad 1B or DH would, for example, probably be willing to pay an Adam Dunn $7m or so. Mark Reynolds is a fair comparison, and he signed a 1 year 6 mill contract in the offseason...Dunn has been the more productive player both this and last year, so I think the 7-9m range is about right. Once again, if the Sox plan to compete next year I'd just keep him, if not I'd chip in half his contract and trade him. -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 17, 2013 -> 01:55 PM) The thing is money is an issue with everyone. Any team would take Adam Dunn for the minimum. One team will take Adam Dunn for $15 million, and that is because they are contractually obligated. Well if our very own Bucket-o-suck truly does have connections he said the Sox are willing to throw in money to get back better players. Personally though, if the Sox wanna compete next year I'd keep him. If they wanna rebuild then chip in however much money you need to to get a proper return for a guy who is doing exactly what a team should expect. -

From a few weeks ago.... If money isn't an issue with the Orioles then this would somewhat confirm that they'd be interested in Dunn. He's been much better than Reynolds this year and has actually struck out less..... But the Orioles professional hitters have never seen or want to be around such ineptitude right greg? -
Corey Dickerson looks rather intriguing if they're gonna trade Rios and or move Tank to 1B next year. He's their 15th ranked prospect but I suspect after putting up the numbers he has in AAA (.383/.426/.659) that that ranking will go up considerably if he doesn't lose his prospect eligibility....and the the chances of us getting him for Crain may have gone down considerably.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 15, 2013 -> 06:16 PM) I don't know about "deadly." You could look at it another way and say he'll ruin that lineup if he gets in one of his patented strikeout funks. Their professional hitters are probably not used to seeing such ineptitude on a fairly frequent basis. It's going to be great to rebuild and not have Dunn around anymore. lol oh greg, you do know Mark Reynolds was on Baltimore last year right? His K rate was actually higher than Dunns is right now. -

I know it's only the Summer League but Andrew Goudelock has looked pretty damn impressive. 26 in his first game and 31 in the 2nd on 10 of 13 shooting, 5 of 6 beyond the arc. At what point do we talk about this guy making the team? If Snell gets the rookie treatment we've seen the past few years I'd be fine with Goudelock as a backup guard. Erik Murphy also lit it up from downtown going 4 of 5....Malcolm Thomas bagged 22 rebounds. -
QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 14, 2013 -> 11:49 PM) Yes, but I think overall, he escaped even the wrath of Soxtalk. I remember ripping Thornton several times and getting it shoved back in my face. So I tended to tread rather lightly regarding Thornton. He had his staunch supporters because of his overall numbers. A lot of my criticism is the eye test. It seems an inordinate amount of games I've watched the last 2-3 years have included Thornton failing. Perhaps you were bad luck? Matt had 2 bad games this year, every reliever has them, and sans those 2 games Matt had a 2.36 era....To say Matt can't still pitch is just wrong. You seem to be holding a grudge from one of his bad games.

Meh, I'm fine with Robin staying on next year. To go along with AJ and to an extent Youk, the difference between this and last years team is a healthy producing Paul Konerko, and Tanks "sophomore slump". For once, the Sox don't have enough power. -

I missed most of it...Did the Wyatt Family do anything? -
QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 14, 2013 -> 09:45 PM) Did they boo him? He really, truly can't pitch anymore. Good to see the old greg back.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 13, 2013 -> 10:19 PM) Didn't Boozer slim down quite a bit during the lockout too? We don't want him to turn into Chris Bosh... Yes, I actually made the mistake of posting an article from 2011 in my original post before I noticed the mistake. So ya, we got some of the same reports on him going into the lockout season. -

Carlos Boozer looks "noticeably slimmer and toned" this summer, according to beat writer K.C. Johnson. When asked about his improved physique, Boozer replied, "We got D-Rose back. Our fast break is going to be a little faster." Boozer is owed $32.1 million over the next two seasons, an anchor-load of cash under the new CBA, but at least (unlike some amnesty candidates) he's still productive -- he averaged 16.2 points and 9.8 rebounds in 32 minutes per game last year, and he's missed a combined three games in the past two seasons. Lol for those who saw my mix up they know this isn't the first time Boozer has looked noticeably thinner. I like the idea of speeding things up. -
QUOTE (hi8is @ Jul 13, 2013 -> 03:35 AM) Bullpens gonna need a lot of work and the rotation will need some solidification as well. The rest of this year and the next two to come will be interesting. The bullpen maybe, but I don't think the rotation will need any sort of solidification next year. The rotation right now is soooo deep that they can potentially trade 2 SPs and still have enough for a competing rotation. Right now the Sox have Sale/Peavy/Danks/Q/Santiago, and they have Johnson, Axe, and Rienzo who I believe anyone of those can be a competent #5 starter with Johnson having the potential of being much more.

Tough crowd here on soxtalk. This guy was Bostons #6 prospect and the #8 prospect in the whole Sally league last year and he more than likely fell to #11 due to the hamate problem(once again we've seen PK struggle with the same injury a few times)....For a guy who, pretty much, has become strictly a LOOGY. I think that's a fair trade with the slight edge going to the White Sox. Here's a good article from a Boston perspective on what they gave up.... http://fullcount.weei.com/sports/boston/ba...brandon-jacobs/ Interesting, KW...I mean Rick Hahn...always gets his guy...Didn't have to give up a SP either.
-
Mike Olt also had vision problems this year that needed to be fixed.
-
Not sure where to put this...Any chance we see Rienzo get the start in the double header tomorrow? Unless they're thinking of showcasing Santiago, wouldn't it make some sense to give Hector some time off? He's probably on an innings limit this year right? Rienzo has been doin work lately so it'd be nice to reward him with a cup of coffee.

In 2012 the kid hit .394/.472/.702 vs LHP...This year??? .107/.286/.143....That's an incredible difference for a player who started the year repeating A+(I believe). It'd be incredible if the Sox see what went wrong and get him back to pounding lefties.

A power hitting 3rd basemen that can bat in the 3-6 spot next year is what I'm really craving. A new leadoff hitter would be nice as well, of the CF or SS variety. If they can get that somewhere along the line through a trade, can keep Rios, and can sign a power hitting first basemen next year, then I believe they can contend as early as next year...Probably not for the Central because the Detroit Heat are such a good team but I can see them competing for a wild card spot if things unfold correctly. (To make it clear I'm saying with the addition of 2 impact bats they can do all this).
-
I'm actually fairly impressed with the return here. As other posters pointed out he's been pretty solid the last 2 months, and he had been bothered by a hamate problem. Perhaps 2 months ago was when he finally got over the injury and is the reason he's hitting so well now? It should be fun to see if he continues hitting well. We all remember hearing about PKs hamate bone messing with him at the plate.

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jul 12, 2013 -> 06:07 AM) Well here's something. Buster Olney tweeted that the DBacks have been looking at Peavy and that the Sox have had scouts at their games to watch Randall Delgado. What you guys think? If they include Owings and/or Davidson I would be all over that deal. If Hahn doesn't turn one of our SPs into a ML ready hitter I'd be very disappointed.

QUOTE (whitesox901 @ Jul 11, 2013 -> 10:07 PM) When do you guys think the first move is? Tomorrow, for my birthday, they will have traded Lexi and Crain for Matt Adams.
