  1. Don't draft a 2nd QB they said, there will be options available they said..... Do I go with The Sanchise Hoyer Orton (Tough matchup) McCown Vick Bortels
  2. Wouldn't hate to see the Sox "Sell out" on hitting to build a dominate staff. Doubt it happens though.
  3. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 4, 2014 -> 03:26 PM) You have to start paying your players eventually. Gillaspie and Eaton will be arb eligible in 2016, Sale and Quintana's salary goes up, and there will be others who are also reaching arbitration at that time, never mind any other signings they make. $20 mill a year is really not a good investment to make on a DH. I'm using 20M as the high end. I'm hoping it doesn't get that high but even so I think it's feasible with how low the payroll is. Arbitration isn't gonna cost that much for those guys and the following year (If it isn't already off the books) Danks 15M comes off the books. This is all coming from a guy who thinks we're closer than a lot of people on here though. I can also see the payroll pushing back up well over 100M in a year or 2.
  4. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 4, 2014 -> 03:23 PM) I think they will be freeing up $8.3 mill of that. And, at the very least, it will be $3.9 mill. Agreed, so couple that with the 45.9 already signed up and we're looking at 51.8 in commitments.
  5. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Nov 4, 2014 -> 02:00 PM) But I think that's the crux of the argument, though. Literally all of us want him on the team at a low price, but do you want him at market price? The board is split almost exactly 50/50 on the idea that he should be, essentially, the biggest part of our offseason, because the price he is going to command would definitely be the biggest expenditure for us, to the point of affecting or sometimes preventing other expenditures. That's a fascinating split, to me. My thing with this whole argument is even at 20M a year the payroll only goes up to ~71.....If you believe Rock when he said that the payroll will be over 100M when the Sox are ready to compete that still leaves a good deal of cash to address other needs.
  6. QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 2, 2014 -> 04:06 PM) I've decided the Sox are not the type of team to give 15-20 million for four years to a guy as old as Victor. I see no way the Sox acquire him; it's not going to happen. I think the Sox are more apt to sign a guy like Billy Butler on the cheap. He "might" have 2-3 good years left in him and might like finally being in a hitters park. More than anything, I stress the "cheap" part. He wants to return to KC but if the Sox show real love, they could get him. Sweet, now its gonna happen!
  7. QUOTE (professa @ Nov 2, 2014 -> 03:48 PM) Honestly, he would fine for a platoon as long as we get another big time hitter in the DH role. He's a type of player though that needs to be spelled against LH. Whether that means keeping Viciedo to platoon with him or sign a guy like Gomes, I'm not sure. Rick will figure it out. Nori actually has some reverse splits working for him, he's actually been a beast against LHP. He could use a platoon partner vs RHP.
  8. QUOTE (SCCWS @ Nov 2, 2014 -> 03:22 PM) Have you noticed that the "top prospect" has not reached AAA yet and he has struggled defensively playing SS at A and AA levels??? And the discussion I'm having is talking about him taking over for Lexi 3 years from now, which should be the plan anyway. Hell it's plausible Anderson "forces" them to deny Lexis option in 2.
  9. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 2, 2014 -> 02:32 PM) I'd say so yeah. You're counting on the money from Alexei to be freed up to make that ok, so we're playing a rookie at the back of the lineup and downgrading from the veteran who's had that position for years? So when do contending teams play their top prospects? Since the goal should be to contend year in and year out then why not just trade all your prospects? Even if they wanna resign Lexi I'm sure 15M from Martinez won't cripple them. Esp. when you consider Sale, Q, and Rodon is gonna cost around 20M combined (Sale and Q will cost 18M and Rodon will still be on a rookie contract). That rotation, namely Sale and Q, is gonna create A LOT of flexibility when it comes to money.
  10. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 2, 2014 -> 02:08 PM) If you're going to spend big money to bring in Victor Martinez then that would seem like a sensible move to me. $15 per over 3+ for a 36 year old DH is an "All in this year" move if I've ever seen one. Still not following. So 3 years from now, with Anderson starting the year in AA this coming year, it would be rebuilding to play him?
  11. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 2, 2014 -> 02:03 PM) So we'll be rebuilding by breaking in a young rookie SS while paying a 39 year old DH $15 mil? Playing your top prospect= rebuilding? Huh, didn't know that. We should just trade him then.
  12. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 2, 2014 -> 01:58 PM) And we'll be hunting for a new SS? We got this fella by the name of Tim Anderson who should be pretty good....And who will be paid pennies. Not to mention that rotation that will feature Sale, Q, and Rodon who will be making about 20M combined.
  13. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 2, 2014 -> 01:56 PM) 3 year deal and the Sox will hate that contract before the end. Good thing Danks and Lexi's 25M will be off the books.
  14. If they add a big bat at DH it wouldn't be the worst addition. He hits lefties better than righties so hitting him back to back with Eaton wouldn't be a bad idea. He only grounded into 5 DPs, he sees a lot of pitches, takes walks, doesn't strikeout a lot, so he's got the makings of a pretty good #2 hitter in front of Abreu and said big bat Dh.
  15. I've been all aboard the VMart train. Front load a 3 year deal with a 4th year option if he insists on 4 years. Payroll is minimal and even if he shows signs of falling of coming into the 3rd year we have Danks 15M and Lexi's 11M coming off the books so we won't be crippled by his contract.
  16. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 2, 2014 -> 11:06 AM) We just let Adam Dunn walk away. The move would be made with the thought that you can get him to return to his previous years production...Much like the Jay Bruce and other buy low candidates that have been discussed.
  17. Thoughts on trading for Chris Davis? I bring it up just because his name hasn't been brought up yet. Free agent after this season so the price shouldn't be tooo astronomical. Probably one of our top guys and a few mid range guys.
  18. QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Nov 1, 2014 -> 10:03 PM) I just looked at the AFL site and noticed that. Oh well, nothing wrong with Bassitt getting some rest since he's been striking batters out left and right anyway. Ya, he'll probably get a few innings Monday anyway.
  19. I'm betting the house on Andrew Miller....I continue to think money won't be an issue and with the payroll where it is they throw big money (big for a reliever) at Miller. Edit of the edit.... A trade?? I'm going with a name that hasn't been talked about here....Chris Davis.
  20. Unless there's a huge 2 out rally there will be no Bassitt =(
  21. QUOTE (chw42 @ Nov 1, 2014 -> 09:46 PM) Can we please stop this VMart train? Never.
  22. QUOTE (midway @ Nov 1, 2014 -> 03:11 PM) Martinez and Gregorson yeah, but Rasmus makes me puke!!! I'm iffy on Rasmus as well, but at the very least he could offer some Tank/Dunn like production with above average D which would be nice. Someone here talked me into being ok with that. Adding him to Martinez would push him down to the 6 spot where his power would be real nice.
  23. QUOTE (Brian @ Nov 1, 2014 -> 01:28 PM) If we could get about 10 guys, many one interested in doing a private contest on fanduel for Soxtalk guys? $5 entry? This is the first week I'm flat broke and can't play =(.....Because I'm a glutton for punishment I filled out a team anyway and wrote it down just to see how it would have done. Perhaps next week though I would be interested.
  24. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 1, 2014 -> 01:15 PM) Because the White Sox aren't going to have a 110-115 million dollar payroll next year. Again, if there are players that make sense, why not? I think it's pretty realistic to say that with a better bullpen we're probably looking at a .500 ball club this past year. As is with just the addition of some bullpen arms we're probably a .500 ball club next year. Then when you add other pieces (SP, LF, DH, a whole year of Avi) to said .500 ball club you're looking at a potential playoff club.
  25. QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Nov 1, 2014 -> 11:33 AM) Good gawd no. I remember how frustrating it was watching him trying to find the strike zone. He had great control in 2013 when he only walked 4 in 25.2 while striking out 28. That said I certainly wouldn't rely on him as a back end of the bullpen guy, nor would I sign him for 2M....I'm not sure if he's fallen this far but I'd try to get him on a minor league contract or vet min, if that's even a thing. Between Petricka, Putnam, Guerra, and one of Webb/Cleto/Bassitt, I'm somewhat content with our RH relievers. If we add a RH reliever I'd prefer it be a proven closer like Robertson, Jansson, KRod, or Romo.
