But he's never operated this way. And guys his age don't change their stripes. It's one of the reasons the Sox won't get it right until he steps away.
-
Unless JR comes up with a plan to pay for it, this is going to drag on for years. I just can't wait until Manfred waltzes into town saying the White Sox must have a new park. They need a new owner. I used to like JR, but I'm sick of watching him get free money. You gotta love the it's so hard to make money in baseball line he has on one hand, and on the other, he can't sell, his capital gaines tax will be too large.
-
Very little. What they have paid in rent probably doesn't even cover the upkeep. And they got a free restaurant and team store, for which they pay nothing. For all these gifts, the least JR could do is field a major league team.
-
He only got infrastructure for the UC, and it was 98% funded by Japanese banks. He got what he wanted with the baseball park, but that isn't going to happen again. For one thing, he doesn't have a structure falling apart. The ISFA was pretty upset how favorable his lease is. And those were both over 30 years ago. GRF cost $137 million to build. The state still owes $50 million on it. Good luck JR.
-
I would love to live in the $13 million penthouse at 1500 N. LSD. Doesn't mean that I will. If JR wants a new home. great. Do what the rest of the world has to do and start writing checks. Someone needs to tell JR public building of baseball stadiums is a harder racket to make money than even owning a baseball team.
-
State still owes $50 million on GRF.

I love this tweet Sports owners love talking about their team as a business until it's time to ask for taxpayer money. Suddenly they become a public good.
-
He hasn't talked to the ISFA at all. And there is no way they are going to give him billions to build a new stadium. His only hope is to find someone who will if he won't do it himself. If he can, then he has the ISFA over a barrel. Now, not so much.
-
He has to create something either real or fake to help his hand if he was to re-up on 35th Street. Chances are, he isn't getting the sweetheart deal he got the first time. Although , even if the park is giving tremendous updates and the area around it is developed, how can anyone project attendance will pop unless the team plays well? Maybe in the 78 that changes.
-
Maybe, but if you know anyone who lives by Wrigley, unless you are a Cubs fanatic and like the location to attend games, it's a nightmare with the heavier traffic, puking and pissing on game days.
-
Yes he did. He pitched 1 game, 3 innings his JR year, because of Covid, but also a missed the first 3 weeks with an arm injury.
-
Don't forget, JR was offered this site over 35 years ago.
-
Sure they would like to get it, but at least $1 billion for the stadium is a steep price to pay, and how are they going to get any of that back? Apartments and condos maybe, but if they are so lucrative, why haven't they built anything yet? To me, it's the best site for a White Sox park available. But it costs too much, and who really would put up the cash? You need someone like Steve Cohen or someone else who isn't keeping score with how much money they have when they die. If Pat Ryan were involved, I would think there's a chance. But JR? No way.

Good call.

The guy got hurt as a starter in college. The Sox drafted him. He pitched 6 glorious innings, then got hurt again. In what world was he going to be successful as a starting pitcher? The White Sox, RH,KW, all screw up all the time, but how can you say this guy would have been fine if they just made him a starter from the get go? The only reason anyone has ever thought this guy was MLB starting pitcher material was because he wanted to be a starter and he threw 6 unreal innings in 2020. Before that, most people here thought WTF when the Sox drafted him.
-
That's probably correct. I think a ballpark in the South Loop would have been great. But it's billions, and unless its mostly done privately, it makes no sense in today's world. The state and city have no money, and they have a ballpark. And JR's motto has always been other people's money. He doesn't want to shell out for this. Maybe the developer wants it so bad they will do something. But it seems like the longest of long shots.
-
He has never been all in on anything during his 43+ year reign. Hard to believe that starts now. It certainly hasn't with the team.
-
obviously it's something to discuss, but when you think about it, this whole thing is laughable. The state will significantly help build a new park, while they have another a short distance away in perfectly fine condition? Or Jerry Reinsdolrf is going to spend a billion or two of his own money building the park? C'mon. man.
-
David Puddy can paint his face and throw out the ceremonial first pitch every night.
-
Would taking out loans to build this think help JR with his death tax issues?
-
Did he work for a Japanese bank? I watched an interview with JR and his son, and Rocky and his son talking about the UC a couple of years ago. All but 3 million of it, it cost $180 million to build, was financed by Japanese banks. US banks didn't want to touch it. The one thing I took out of the interview was that fewer people actually drive to games anymore. The UC has 6000 parking spots. Look for something that will house year round entertainment to be built there someday soon.

Supposedly this guy did get Geno and Wilson to get rid of the ball quicker. -

She's like MJ. She sells out arenas. Her acting skills need some work. The State Farm commercial she was pretty bad, and that "blindside" hit she took leaving the court yesterday? Isn't flopping a technical these days? -

Not all that excited, but hey, it's not Brian Ferentz. -
Yeah, JR can’t make it work in a metro area with 9.5 million people, but would better off in a spot with 20% of that. That makes no sense it’s one thing if you NEED a new stadium, but he can’t play that card. He’s probably playing the ISFA for another sweetheart lease plus some upgrades, because he doesn’t want to spend his money building a ballpark.
