Electric Cars ~ Unintended Consequences
While that is a nice picture the current reality is coal (dying out), oil, nuclear, and blocking rivers for hydro. I was surprised to learn there are two reactors being built with about twenty more being planned. So while we both will agree that solar and wind is prefered, that may not be reality. Consumers will take cheap electricity being produced any which way when their demands increase.

Dick Enberg...R.I.P.
Not to sound like the old guy who thinks everything new sucks, but as we lose these guys an era in sports is ending. Listening to guys like him, Scully, etc was such a treat. I wish there was more room for a few of those guys instead of the over the top yellers and big time homers.

Technology catch-all thread
We use Chromebooks in the classroom. I'm pleasantly surprised how robust they are. I rarely have to send one in for a failure. Actually, so far, none have failed in 18 months of heavy school use. My son gave me a Ducky One keyboard for Christmas to help spur my writing. Wow, it's a throwback to the super solid keyboards of the 1980s. Plus the crazy backlighting affects are mesmerizing.

Electric Cars ~ Unintended Consequences
I was talking with a couple family members who are buying Teslas and it sparked a few thoughts. One, while the car does not pollute, the generation of the electricity to make it run does pollute. This isn't really a 100% win for the environment. The addition of corn into gasoline eventually caused the price of corn to rise. Basically the people who were putting it in their tanks harmed the people who were putting corn in their bellies with higher prices for corn. So what happens when the demand for electricity to power vehicles rises? With increased demand usually comes increased prices. Migt we all be paying higher rates ten or twenty years down the road whether we have electric cars or not. Another issue, much of how we pay to maintain and add roads his by taxes on gas and diesel. If we see a sizable decline in those tax revenues, how will we adapt to fund roads?

DNAinfo.com and The Gothamist closed down effective immediately
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Nov 2, 2017 -> 05:22 PM) Employees voted to unionize last week. This week Joe Ricketts decided the business wasn’t making enough money and closed down, going so far as to immediately scrub the sites from the internet https://www.google.com/amp/nypost.com/2017/...-gothamist/amp/ Ayn Rand would be proud.

Sports franchises operate differently than most other businesses. While they have historically made money for their investors, I agree that the front man in the deal buys them for ego more than the ROI. Which makes sense in light of needing to have amassed a small fortune to be in position to buy one.

Technology catch-all thread
My 80 year young mother in law who can Skype with the best of them and isn't totally horrible with technology is looking for a cheap way to call family in Australia, England, and Dubai. I need it to be reasonably simple or cheap. Currently she Skypes all the time but wants the freedom to walk around the house and not be tethered to a computer.

Very Cool: Aerial Video of Chicago in 1914
QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 30, 2017 -> 01:59 PM) At 1:20 there is a great shot of an old Boston Store building and the updated version still showing the ghost sign of "boston store" that I want to go out and find now. I was thinking the same thing. One thing that I like about leaving Chicago is when I come back I do the touristy things that I was "too cool" to do when I live there.

Any Fishing Fanatics Here?
QUOTE (Wanne @ Sep 20, 2017 -> 06:24 PM) Fly rod huh? I've got the Fishing Network (which I friggin LOVE)...and always thought about trying that...but good lord that looks like a pain! I don't know...maybe in these NW rolling rivers they show...that's the ticket...but just looks like a ton of work. But kudos to you Tex for gettin' on that horse! Saltwater does kick ass btw. One of my favorite things to do it head to San Diego (it's close) during yellow tail season. Any kind of fishing kicks ass IMO. One thing I'm delving in this weekend are some tubes. I've never really used...or tried them...but they make sense. I'm on this site called Wired2Fish...and they have a ton of vids for techniques...and I came across some tube ones last week. So gonna give it a whirl. I'm still getting used to the kayak fishing. It's kind of a pain in the ass...with very limited room. I lost a really nice bass this weekend on a YUM Dinger....got it right up to my yak and it popped off. I stewed for an hour lol... Waiting for the line to load the rod on the backcast was the most difficult thing for me. The delay between a spinning rod or casting rod loading and a fly rod is about 10 to 1.

Jose Abreu with 1st Sox cycle in 17 years
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 11, 2017 -> 10:07 AM) It's amazing it's only the 6th cycle in team history. The other amazing thing was last week when the Sox went back to back to start the game, it was only the 3rd time ever they did that. I would have lost a bet on both of those. I would have thought the actual numbers were triple that.

I am excited about having a top 3 pick even though I know it's still a crap shoot. Wasn't Jordan a 3 pick?

Technology catch-all thread
QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Sep 12, 2017 -> 12:13 PM) Any photogs on the board? I'm debating whether to update my DSLR. I have a Nikon D5000 that I bought 8 years ago. I started reading reviews of some of the newer models and also the mirrorless cameras, so now i'm down the rabbit hole of maybe buying something new. The upgrades seem to be mostly tech upgrades like better autofocusing systems or a touchscreen. Seems like from an image quality perspective there may be a slight bump but not noticeable unless i'm printing off large prints (which I don't do often and when I do they look fine). I'm also debating jumping from Nikon to Canon or even Sony for their mirrorless camera. Problem is I have 3 Nikon lenses so I would have to start over if I jumped to another brand. I take a ton of photos of my kids and we travel a good amount. But I want to start taking more video and I think Canon DSLR's handle that better than the Nikon. I'm also thinking about buying the new Tamron 18-400mm lens. That's an insane focal length range for one lens. This past summer while travelling up the east coast and across Canada we left our Canon DSLR at home and rarely missed it. First time in 30 years I took a vacation without a full bag of camera gear and my picture memories only suffered marginally.

Ongoing storm disaster thread
Harvey threaded itself between my son in Brownsville and my daughter in Houston. Her house was safe from the flooding but there was devastation close by. Those that remember FlaSoxxJim might like to know after "camping" without electricity at his house his power was finally restored earlier today. From the pictures he posted he was eating well while cooking on a coleman camp stove.

2017 Independents Thread
QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jun 20, 2017 -> 11:10 PM) I'd argue it's close down the middle, edge towards Republicans. That tide turned about six years ago on this board. Before that there was a much more active Republican slant to the board. Especially the daytime crowd.

Any Fishing Fanatics Here?
I caught my first bass on a fly and fly rod last weekend. I fished tournaments with Anglers Unlimited in the 80s and 90s. Lots of bass and walleye in the Chain and into Wisconsin. Now I'm near the gulf and well saltwater kicks ass for fishing.

2024/2028 Olympics
QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 7, 2017 -> 11:08 AM) And I hope they REFUSE to build something to spec when a reasonable alternative already exists. Don't forget there are pressures from within the community that profit by new stuff getting built. They contribute to campaigns and know how to influence getting stuff they want. An Olympics is a great excuse to spread a little public money into the hands of key supporters under the Olympic rings.

2024/2028 Olympics
I wonder how the Olympics could be revised to make it lighter and easier for cities to host. One idea worth considering is multiple cities each olympics using existing facilities. You would not have all the athletes in one place at one time, but for security reasons that may not be an issue. I'm thinking TRack and Field in one city, baseball in another, swimming over there, rowing over here, etc.

2017 Masters/Golf Thread
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jun 26, 2017 -> 05:27 PM) Yeah, when I've been hitting it good for awhile I then run into lazy habits like last week when I was pulling the club through the zone wide open. Hoping I can get my pro to straighten me out this week. Does your pro have a video locker? Most of the pros here will do a vid analysis between lessons. Great for a quick check.

2017 Masters/Golf Thread
One of my players verbally committed to a college today. I'm really happy for her. We're avoiding the distractions during the school year. She decided early on D3 so she could play right away and travel. She didn't want to be stuck on campus for a couple years at a D1 school. Plus she was offered 100%, most D1 were going to be partial.

2017 Masters/Golf Thread
QUOTE (iamshack @ Jun 25, 2017 -> 09:19 AM) I swear, I play so much better when I haven't picked up a club in 6 months. It's when I'm playing frequently that all the stupid s*** happens. I always played a great round in March when I was living in Chicago. I wasn't overswinging. I would be in balance, making solid contact, and not putting too much pressure on shooting a low round.
