  1. The owners of the company I worked for were flying in to shut down my office after our new owners shifted geographical responsibilities. Their plane was grounded and they had to fire everyone over the phone. I am choosing to think about the folks on Flight 93 which crashed in Pennsylvania. They always seem to be overlooked as we focus on the slow motion horror of the Twin Towers.
  2. QUOTE (Elgin Slim @ Sep 8, 2016 -> 12:11 AM) Group homes aren't an answer IMO, because those basically trade labor for food and shelter. We all trade our labor for food and shelter. That's why we work. It really doesn't matter if the company that pays you also provides the shelter or you take an additional step and cash a check from company A and write a check to company B. You are still trading labor for food and shelter. In the broader view there are two major issues here, work and shelter. Each should be maxed for the individual. For some who need help caring for themselves and need help paying for the care the most appropriate facility may be a group home. And that regardless of the circumstances that led to a person needing assistance with their day to day living. The people who can afford better accommodations of course are free to buy whatever services they like. But as you know that also ties in with Work. We can't escape an economic system that requires business owners to seek out the greatest labor for the least cost. There just isn't an incentive in our system for business owners to sacrifice profits for people. The better the skill set you have the better leverage you have with employers. There does need to be better awareness of the abilities of Autistic individuals so that employers are more willing to employ people with Autism.
  3. QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 9, 2016 -> 12:39 PM) It's a horrible way to protest. Some talk show last night discussed this and a couple military guys called in and are furious. They've had buddies die in war. Why would you imagine it doesn't offend military people when so much of their daily routine involves the flag? There's so much respect toward the anthem and flag. My opinion is Colin is a punk for doing this. That's my personal take and as far as sports it's about the most selfish thing he could do to a team, thrust all the attention on himself. Disgraceful. Attack Mexican-Americans and attract attention to yourself -- gain votes in primary. Attack Muslims and attract attention to yourself -- gain votes in primary Attack Blacks and attract attention to yourself -- gain votes in primary. Attack people with disabilities and attract attention to yourself -- gain votes in primary. Attack white people and attract attention to yourself -- "it's about the most selfish thing he could do to a team, thrust all the attention on himself. Disgraceful."
  4. My wife just bought a Subaru Forester. What a pleasant car buying experience. I really like the car.
  5. A white person claims America is horrible and we need to make it great again, wins his party's nomination for President. A black athlete claims America is horrible and gets slammed. Black people are told to stop the violent protests and protest peacefully. Black man sits silently during anthem, Oops that's wrong. No racial problems in America
  6. There are long lists of reasons why both candidates are unfit. Because we are not talking legally unfit, those reasons are truly in the opinion of the person expressing them. I am as big a liberal as some on this board and I'm not dancing a jig heading to the ballot box. I'll toss out one reason why both candidates are wrong for America this decade. The President as a cheer leader for America. We are going to have four more years of a President that many people in America can not stand. Four more years of bitter partisan division. I'm not going to touch morals and ethics.
  7. Thank you. I should have proofread better. I meant that he may be losing the extablishment candidates and elected officials, but the voters still seem to line up behind him.
  8. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 3, 2016 -> 06:43 PM) Funny you say that as GOP people are defecting right and left, and I have yet to see a single significant democrat do that. But not voters. But that is a great point. This may be the GOPs return of the favor. Or This is exactly what Trump, as the outsider, the antiestablishment candidate needs. It's a great GOP plan to get him elected. Have him look like an outsider. Y'all are brilliant.
  9. QUOTE (Coach @ Aug 3, 2016 -> 07:11 AM) Tex, As I said above, I love baseball. I even sometimes watch other teams on tv who I don't even care who wins or loses. What pains me the most though is the lack of heart that seems to be present on the WS. I don't see good fundamental baseball from not backing up, poor base running and lack of hustle on even routine grounders. I can live with the loses if I see them playing to win but just fall short in the runs column. I also said I am a coach. One thing I always tell my players is if you can go home and look yourself in the mirror and tell yourself you played with 100% effort today, you had a good day. I tell them to play hard for all 42 outs (7 innings in high school) and the wins will come. Not all the time but they will come more times if the effort is there. I just don't see 100% effort from all the players who get paid a lot of money to play a kid's game. 39 if the home team is winning. Do you notice as a coach you become more sensitive to different things. Effort is one of those.
  10. In my 40 years or so of following the Sox, by some posters arguments, I should have paid attention maybe 6 or 7 of those seasons. I love baseball. I have watched every level from T-ball to World Series. On the pro side from independent ball all through the MiLB. On a bad year, the level of play at a MLB game is the best in the world. It doesn't matter who is playing. Two MLB teams will produce the best baseball anywhere. Currently more than a third of the teams have a worst record than the Sox. Should fans in those cities stop attending games? How about all the teams that will not make the playoffs? What kind of a league would be have if fans stopped attending games or watching on TV? I guess the question becomes, can you support MLB and not support a specific team somehow?
  11. On the sad note: A lower profile Dem nominee without all the publicity and lifetime in the spotlight of Hillary would have the easiest time getting elected since Carter - Reagan for the GOP. On the plus side. A normal middle of the road Republican could have crushed Hillary. It's to the point where I read something and start believing it automatically because there is nothing Trump can do or say that doesn't already sound like it came from the Onion.
  12. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Aug 1, 2016 -> 10:41 AM) How is he getting a pass? On a daily basis he's being talked about in a negative way for the dumb things he says/does. That's all you can do at this point. He's not an elected official. Someone already posted what I meant. A sizable population identify with one party or the other and will flip that switch. I would argue that the Republican voters are the most loyal. There were a whole lot of Reagan Democrats but I can't think of many Carter, Clinton, Obama Republicans.
  13. QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 2, 2016 -> 12:28 AM) Say what you want about Trump ... I just watched him on Hannity and if you listen to the man in a non GOTCHA environment, the man says a lot of interesting things. I loved the last question of a long interview. Hannity asked Trump if he was worried about the election being "rigged." He said of course he was worried about that. He said it was rigged against Bernie as proven by the DNC emails. He said many precincts were rigged against Romney. He said he's very worried that our country is fixing the vote for Hillary. Folks, say what you want. The possibility of rigged elections in the USA is SCARY. I can't believe there's not more outrage over the DNC rigging it for Hillary. Folks, I have no interest in this either way (I won't vote for Trump or Hillary) but I think it's very scary that amid allegations of things being "rigged," we don't seem to care. We should have all necessary precautions taken to avoid this election being rigged. Cmon ... if Trump is able to win, he should be allowed to win. If Bernie had enough support to garner the nomination he shoulda garnerned the nomination. I WANT A FAIR ELECTION. check out the hannity interview if it's on youtube or fox news channel. Trump does not sound like a madman or a dangerous man. He sounds electable, folks. Of course it is rigged. Democrats have control of the courts and the media so there won't be anywhere to turn. Now the Dems have their plant, Trump, as the nominee. Not only is the plan for Hillary to be elected, then Chelsea, but to have Trump split the GOP in thirds so that the GOP is so crushed they won't be able to rebound for decades. It will be so easy to steal millions and millions of votes in all the right places. One reason Trump can't raise that much money is the wealthy people in the world understand this and aren't going to waste money on a candidate that was put in place to lose. Remember Trump was a Dem before he was a Rep.
  14. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 31, 2016 -> 03:10 PM) Unless something new is revealed, the email thing is old news. No need to ask her about it. The FBI saved her on that issue and that's that. It'd be like asking her about Lewinsky and her husband's behavior there. Old news. Clintons survived both without a scar, as usual. Our country is in love with the Clintons no matter what they do. I wish I had the kind of money they have built up. Setting up posts to make Hillary look good. Nicely done. Instead of Trump's money? Trump doesn't know Russian's aggressive advances, he gets a pass. He insults a fire marshal for enforcing the law, gets a pass. Claims a Mexican American judge can't be unbiased in his rulings, gets a pass. Mocks a disabled reporter, gets a pass. Commits fraud, gets a pass. Won't release his tax returns, gets a pass. That's all old news. Hillary does any of that and the GOP will spend a few million on special investigations.
  15. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 29, 2016 -> 01:20 PM) My honda was purchased in 1983, still runs. They are the best When I ran the Boy Scout camp we had a Honda and a Deere. Both worked amazingly well. I think I prefered the Honda because it was slightly quieter. The Deere seemed to start easier.
  16. The water district here in San Antonio offers $100 towards drought resistance plants to replace 200 square feet of lawn. We have so far replaced about 1000 square feet of lawn with gardens. The area must be mulched to help conserve water. Bonus is we have a butterfly and hummingbird haven. With several sitting areas we enjoy the gardens. Of course this does not work with kids who want to play in the yard.
  17. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 31, 2016 -> 09:53 AM) Me too. Having a competent defensive 4th outfielder will help This
  18. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 30, 2016 -> 10:16 AM) I expect an announcement that Thome (and eventually, AJ) will be similarly involved in the offseason....coaching in PR, Venezuela, etc. Who are the OTHER most likely options out there right now? Sandy Alomar, Jr.? Dave Martinez (again)? I guess we should be scouring the Red Sox, Blue Jays, Rangers, Astros, Tigers, Royals, Orioles, Indians, Cubs, etc., for someone more qualified...and, of course, it would have been nice to see what Renteria could do with this current group instead of letting Ventura serve out the final two months of his lame duck status. Konerko . . .
  19. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jul 30, 2016 -> 11:07 PM) Hillary Clinton accepts 25 million dollar donation from George Soros, the same day she pledges to get the money out of politics. Soxtalk will defend this. The only way to get elected during this election is to accept hundreds of millions of dollars in donations. The only way to get money out of politics is by being elected. So it would seem that you have to play the game, win the game, to change the game.
  20. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Jul 29, 2016 -> 04:42 PM) Don't forget "white cops will kill you just for walking down the street!" http://www.fathers.com/about-ncf/our-team/carey-casey/ I just came back from listening to Carey Casey address the coaches in our school district. He was a professional athlete, well educated at Carolina, has been invited to the White House with both Republicans (Bush 1,000 POints of Life) and Democrats (Obama). He lives in a very nice area of Kansas City. He had to teach his boys how to interact with the police. He was worried enough as a black father in America to teach his boys that some cops will treat you with disrepect because you are black. How many white fathers have that same fear?
  21. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 29, 2016 -> 01:50 PM) I don't like discussing the slavery issue so I'll comment on this and Hillary instead. Slavery makes me sad and the thought of it makes me sad. At this time I'd rather forget that we actually were cruel enough to have slaves in this country. Disgraceful. Anyhow Tex's post is crazy. Maybe there was a compliment in there somewhere; I'll take it. I don't know how I block trolls. I've said it before. I am fiercely loyal to former Sox who were good, like most members of the '05 team. I feel like most of my predictions have logic in them and many come true. It's no act. I don't like Hillary. But Newt is right. Most people feel America is not safe. You conveniently didn't comment on that surgeon moving his family out of America to his homeland cause he felt our country was too dangerous. That's powerful. Hate to break it to the Hillary supporters, but I just read several reviews of her speech: cliche ridden and not good. CNN.com in fact said people left wanting several other of the speakers to be the candidate not Hillary. Greg deftly moves the conversation past the slave issue and on to other things. A few non sequiturs, new topics, and we move on. Well played. It's like a concert conductor.
  22. BTW, technically this is a cap cap = bill (goes part way) hat = brim (goes all the way around) /getting into English teacher mode.
  23. QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Jul 27, 2016 -> 01:36 PM) Tim Lincecum is not a good MLB pitcher anymore. Good read. Thanks for posting.
  24. QUOTE (BrianAnderson @ Jul 27, 2016 -> 09:53 AM) I'll take the other side. I like it. But I also was one who showed up early to make sure I secured my Sox Hawaiian Shirt back in June. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I don't like the bill, but I'd wear it (which is a sure sign that it is ugly).
  25. I did a little checking. I looked at satellite news reports from 100, 200, 300 years ago and I couldn't find any reports of attacks in Japan like this. Anywhere in the world for that matter. Then I watched the Andy Griffith Show for what America was like 50 years ago and there wasn't any violent crime in Mayberry. Otis would lock himself up when he got too drunk. Some times some rowdy kid from Mount Pilot would come screeching through town but Andy could always handle that. People only started being mean to each other and killing each other a couple decades ago.
