It won’t matter based on his draft year stat line and anecdotal evidence from Schaumburg last year hardly proves admissible in a hearing. They can point at Madrigal’s speed of promotion, but he still had considerably more MiLB experience and the numbers to justify moving him (or Robert, for that matter) so quickly.

Way too early to forecast that the Padres’ method will mirror the Cubs, because for that to happen you’d need some combination on injuries to top players (Bryant) and non-performance (Darvish for first half of Cubs’ run, Heyward, Kimbrel, Chatwood, etc.) But they have the minor league depth and especially pitching depth to sustain things at least through the end of the Tatis contract (four more years)...which should be around the time Machado’s prime has passed. Of course, the White Sox risk losing Giolito after 2023 and Anderson the following year. If anything, the Cubs and Royals look more similar (except on far different payroll scales), in that they hit early peaks in their window but had difficulty sustaining them.

And that information/wariness is already priced into his market value. Perhaps for a super team in need of this year’s version of Hader, you roll the dice knowing he might end up under the knife, but how many of those 98-103 MPH pitchers have gone injury-free for more than 3-5 years anyway?

Would love to see the average salary of those over 60 taking all these jobs out of financial desperation/inability to keep up with health care and prescription medicine costs. The problem during the last five years is the “veteran middle”...pretty high quality but FAs in their 30’s. Part of it’s obviously due to shortened playing careers with less steroids in the game, theoretically. Players are largely done at 33-34. Obviously there have been a few notable exceptions in all sports, but not many.

You’re underestimating the damage that will be done to the pen if the last two starters struggle...and God forbid an injury to the top three starters. Hendriks is fine as an over the top, finishing piece...for a World Series contender. But we skipped over a few steps to get there, at least for this season. The depth we had with two legit catchers is sorely going to be tested. And having experienced Billy Koch, Linebrink, Dotel and David Robertson, I just have an aversion as a lifetime Sox fan about overspending on bullpen pieces when there are major holes remaining across the roster. I’m not going to bother to list them all, but we’ve had roughly 8-10 underpaid guys capable of closing emerge from the most unexpected places since Howry/Foulke, and paying top of the market dollars just is scary. Maybe part of it was witnessing Craig Kimbrel go from the HoF to a complete enigma. Now if we had normal attendance/incoming revenue and weren’t so artificially strapped with budget constraints, it wouldn’t be so bothersome.
